Apple-tree Candy: description of the variety, photos, reviews, planting

08/15/2017 At the time of this writing, the Candy apple variety was not included in the Register. The description of the variety is given from various sources: publications of the Association of Producers of Fruits, Berries and Planting Material, records of nurseries, etc.

Variety "Candy" was bred in the Michurin Research Institute of Horticulture as a result of crossing the varieties "Papirovka" and "Korobovka". The author or authors of the variety have not yet been identified.

Subspecies

Candy summer

This is not a grade this is a marketing and advertising gimmick. Since "Candy" is an early summer species in terms of ripening and is sometimes ready for picking already in the first week of August.

Ranet Candy

Apple tree Ranet candy - we simply cannot give a description of the variety, since this traders' ploy... In the normal pomology of apple trees no such variety was found.

Candy-2

The more modern apple-tree Candy-2 is a clone of the original variety with improved performance... She has higher portability and the crown is more comfortable in terms of size.

How to choose seedlings?

Growth, development and abundance of fruiting depend on the choice of high-quality planting material. It is best to purchase one- or two-year-old seedlings for planting. They should be bought only in specialized stores or well-proven nurseries.

Learn how to choose the right quality apple tree sapling.

When buying planting material, it is necessary to inspect well and discard one that has the following defects:

  • damage to the bark and roots;
  • spots and growths on the root collar;
  • brittle and rotten rhizome.

The seedling should be healthy in appearance, with a strong, well-developed rhizome, no higher than 2.5 m in height. The stem of high-quality planting material under the bark should be colored light green.

Care

Caring for the Candy apple tree is to:

  • TOOrmili, when she is hungry;
  • Watered when the drought;
  • Were treated if she got sick;
  • Chased away parasites.

Therefore, it is important to take proper care of the tree on time and properly:

  • Immediately after planting, frequent, abundant watering is needed;
  • When the tree begins to "gain a crown", it must be properly cleaned;
  • Particular attention should be paid to the introduction of microelement dressings. Local fertilizers such as furnace ash and humus are considered highly necessary for the apple tree. Organic fertilizers are applied around the trunk and only once a year.

Advice! It is necessary to regularly loosen the soil, if tinning is not used in the garden.

To protect the apple tree from scab, during the opening of the bud scales, the apple tree should spray with Fluazinam.

Also in the fall, the roots of the apple tree mulchand in winter stuff to the trunk snow... This will give the tree a greater yield and will be easier to harvest.

Pests and diseases of the variety

Trees resist well almost all major infections that affect apple trees, except for scab. To prevent this disease, they resort to spring spraying with a solution of Bordeaux liquid (3%) or copper oxychloride. Treatments must be done before the buds bloom. After the flowers have fallen off, it is necessary to re-process by applying Bordeaux liquid, but already 1%.

If the scab has settled in the garden, symptoms such as light olive spots on foliage and flowers, the middle of which turns brown a little later, will tell about this.Further, the fruits are affected - they are also covered with spots. Treatment of the disease is carried out by four sprays of the drug "Rayok" (dissolve 1.5-2 ml in a bucket of water). Use 10 liters of working solution per 100 m². Another way is to sprinkle it twice with the "Skor" preparation (dissolve 2 ml in a bucket of water).

Did you know? Soviet cosmonauts had a tradition of eating an apple upon their return from space, immediately after landing. The fruit became the first solid food they ate on Earth.

For one plant, apply 2–5 liters of liquid prepared according to the instructions. In the spring, it is also required to spray against harmful insects - aphids, scale insects, spider mites, lungwort. The use of "Oleocobrite" is recommended (add 400 g to a bucket of water). Against insects that feed on foliage, apply "Karbofos" (add 60 g to 8 liters of water).

Pests and diseases of the variety

On different rootstocks

In addition to Kitaek and Ranetok, the variety is usually takes root in any rootstockssuitable for all summer apple trees in general.

Dwarf

When grown on a dwarf rootstock, the height of the apple tree does not exceed 1.7 m, and fruiting begins already on second year.

Up to a quarter of a centner is harvested from a five-year-old apple tree. Fruit weight reaches 200 grams.

Young apple trees bear fruit constantly, but without fertilizing the fruits decrease in size.

Semi-dwarf

Candy on a semi-dwarf rootstock, of course, is possible, but only in the southern regions... Since in the north it sometimes freezes.

Columnar

Unfortunately, for today it is cheating merchants... Columnar apple trees with this name have not been registered.

Landing dates

Planting a seedling in the ground is possible both in early spring and late autumn, but so that after planting in the fall, the seedling does not begin to grow (that is, after leaf fall).

Planting an apple tree Candy is possible both in spring and autumn.

Spring

Planting pits for spring planting must be prepared in advance, OK flavoring them with organic... Also in the spring, the seedlings are thoroughly watered, the more and more often, the better.

Tree characteristics

In the variety, in the first years of life, the branches grow almost vertically, slightly deviating from the trunk. In adulthood, they already have a horizontal arrangement. The branches are strong and flexible, do not break from snow and the weight of apples. There are many leaves on the branches of the apple tree. They are dark green, leathery, dense.

The crown is predominantly spreading, spherical, easy to form.

As a rule, varietal apple trees are grafted onto wild varieties that are more winter hardiness, disease resistance, growth vigor, etc. Depending on the scion, the characteristics and descriptions of the Candy apple variety differ.

Crown formation

The configuration of the Candy tree depends very much on the rootstock. You can grow the variety on a frost-resistant skeleton-former, or in the form of a stanza. These apple trees own excellent regenerative ability. Therefore, inexperienced gardeners are “forgiven” mistakes in crown formation.

Caution! The use of newfangled types of crown shaping must be used deliberately, otherwise the tree may die!

Pruning

Branches are removed that:

  • Grow inside the crown;
  • Are intertwined;
  • Strongly thicken the crown;
  • Interfere with the growth of neighboring branches;
  • Have mechanical damage.

The place of the cut is covered with garden varnish, otherwise the infection will penetrate into the open wound.

Pruning is carried out in the spring, when the buds are already swollen, but have not yet blossomed. Then it becomes clear which branches are dried and which are alive. Young excess shoots are removed in summer. Only dried and damaged branches can be cut in autumn.

As a result, the crown should be blown through, translucent. On such a tree, the harvest will be excellent, and diseases will be bypassed.

Features of planting and care in different regions

Moscow suburbs

"Candy" requires good sunshine in the northern growing zone. In a shaded area, the tree will be bad, it will not be able to grow normally and form a crown.

Ural

The apple trees of the Urals need rich and non-floating soil... Also, the soil must retain moisture and nutrition. It would be nice that there is no groundwater close to the surface, and the soil is not acidic.

Primorye

A pit for planting in Primorye is dug out in six months and during planting necessarily add:

  • Humus compost;
  • Saltpeter;
  • Superphosphate;
  • Nitroammofosk.

The tree is required elevation or you can surround it drainage grooveif the precipitation is too heavy.

Photo 1

The landing pit in Primorye is prepared in advance.

Siberia

You can grow the variety in Siberia. But you have to take care of protecting young bark on twigs and stem with burlap. Also needed micronutrient supplements and a lot of humus.

Northwest Russia

For planting, a plot with fertile land is best suited. The soil must be thoroughly provided with additional fertilizing, especially before sustainable fruiting. You also need to make lots of organic mulch and substances that deoxidize the soil. But the variety is comparatively unpretentious for the Non-Black Earth Region.

Apple-tree Candy

Register to leave a review. It takes less than 1 minute.

I rate the apple tree at a four, and the fruits, of course, at a “5”! Very tasty apples, small in size, 100 grams. They are yellowish-red, pleasant. We eat them already in August, do not come off - how delicious! The apple tree needs care. We are not too tough summer residents, we do not come to the dacha often. But in the spring and autumn, we must whitewash the trunks of all trees, and in the fall we also warm them with a spruce tree and all sorts of materials at hand. In spring, the tree blooms beautifully, tall, more than three meters. We do not spray it with anything, if the worm penetrates, it does not matter, we cut it off. We try to destroy ants in the area, then there will be no aphids. We love the apple tree and are very pleased that we have it!

I live in Moscow region, I bought seedlings via the Internet. My husband made a meter-long pit, covered it with compost - it took root well. Watering abundantly, pruning and pest control was all we did. Well, the trunk was whitewashed in the spring. This variety does not get scab, it was treated only with insecticides. The first harvest was harvested when the apple trees were 5 years old, then there were only a few kg of apples, then the yield began to grow, at the moment we are consistently collecting from 30 to 50 kilos from the tree. Medium-sized fruits, 150 grams, very sweet and soft. We collect it at the end of summer, we put most of it for harvesting, because apples are poorly stored, they can still lie down until mid-autumn, then they rot.

The apple tree of this variety was purchased on the market - there was a line behind them! And the truth is - we liked the apple tree, and the fruits are generally feast for the eyes and deliciousness! The apple tree was planted in the spring, they made nutritious soil, a large hole. It grew well, watered, looked after him, everyone could not wait for the apples. And in the fifth year they collected a couple of kg, and in the second year already 10 buckets! A productive variety, but also loves care. The apple is sweet, yellow-orange, delicious. It's a pity, you can't store it for a long time, so we process most of it: we cook jam and jam from it. The tree is frost-resistant, undemanding.

Summer variety, harvesting period begins in August. The fruits sit very firmly on the branches, there are a minimum of volunteers, but the yield is inferior to many varieties. From an adult healthy tree, it is possible to collect a maximum of 50 kg, and then with a successful combination of circumstances. But the taste of the fruits is amazing, they are sweeter than sugar. The sensations in the mouth are not an apple, but caramel or marmalade, the appearance of such an illusion is facilitated by a delicate liquid pulp. The aroma corresponds to the name, delicate sweetish. Apple trees are tall, with a powerful trunk, grow very quickly. The crown is spreading, you have to monitor it constantly and shape it. The branches often bend under the weight of the crop, but there were never any breaks.Winter hardiness is high, in the north of the Moscow region trees feel good. The regenerative ability is amazing. After harsh winters, apple trees bloom and bear fruit as usual. I take seedlings exclusively at the Timiryazev Academy and only with an open root system. The cost is higher than in specialized stores and garden centers. But there are no problems with planting and growing. For harvesting apples are not ideal, too soft, it is best to eat them freshly picked from a branch.

We bought an apple tree "Candy" as soon as we acquired our own garden plot in the Moscow region. This is a wonderful apple tree that produces sweet apples! We planted her according to the instructions. All agricultural techniques were written on the package. Bought in a fruit nursery. The main thing, I think, is to fill the planting pit well with compost and fertilizers. The husband added half a bucket more ash, because the soil on the site is acidic. I also noticed that the first days should be watered more often. Apple tree care is normal. In the spring, they whitewashed the trunk, hung up trapping belts from pests. In the summer, they hung up ordinary sticky tapes from flies - butterflies-moths and wasps adhere to them. There was no need to process fungicides - the apple tree is resistant to scab, in any case, we did not have it. In the 5th year, the apple tree gave a decent harvest. The apples are delicious, sweet, soft, candy! Filmed already in August - a summer apple tree. I especially liked that the apples do not crumble, as they sit firmly on the branches. Unfortunately, the apple tree is tall, with a spreading crown, so it is not easy to collect them. On my own I note: in order for the harvest to be good, it is imperative not to spare water during the formation of fruits. So, they are happy with the apple tree. Cook jam and compotes.

The variety is absolutely unpretentious, does not require any special care, everything is as usual. I regularly thin out the crown, carry out the treatment with fungicides and insecticides, whiten the trunk for the winter and cover it with spruce paws. Apple trees are very sensitive to pruning, and they stimulate annual fruiting and have a positive effect on fruit size. Both trees began to bear fruit in the 4th year, grown on a medium-sized rootstock. The fruits are tasty and beautiful, bright yellow with a red striped blush and white specks. Fruit resistance to scab is lower than that of leaves, but in general it is average. There is no point in storing apples, they very quickly lose their consumer and dessert characteristics. And there is nothing special to store for storage, the yield for such large trees is frankly small. I did not receive more than 40 kg from one apple tree. Watering is required only in severe drought, abundant twice a day. There are no problems with pollination, Melba and Antonovka grow nearby, the compatibility is good. The taste is not for everybody, the pulp of medium hardness is very sweet, one might say sugary. The sugar content is high, not an option for losing weight.

In the Krasnodar Territory, with good summer, apples ripen at the end of July. Compared to most summer varieties, Candy has the best taste. In the first 3 years, the trees grew very actively, then there was a slowdown. Now the 7-year-old tree rises 5 meters. The external feature of the tree is the abundance of leaves on the branches. The crown is prone to thickening, you have to regularly deal with molding. During the flowering period, the trees look elegant, all in large white-pink flowers. Fruits weigh on average 100 grams, rarely grow more. The shape is round, but mostly irregular. They are great for juicing. Due to the high iron content, it turns out very dark. Sweet fruits are good for making fruit wines and ciders. In jam not very, pieces creep, but for jam or jam just right. Compotes are very aromatic. In the process of harvesting, real savings in sugar come out.It is problematic to transport apples, with any careless movement they are injured. Storage periods are short. Resistance to most infections is high, but there is no salvation from scab. You need to plant away from conifers, apple trees are infected from them all in a row.

Apple trees of this variety are very fond of sunlight. Before planting, the soil (the optimal time is autumn) requires preparation. Trees thrive on sandy, peaty and clay soils. In each case, different fertilizers are used. Excessive moisture is undesirable. After planting, abundant watering is required - 2.5 buckets every 3 days, but only under a warm autumn. Whitewashing the trunks of young trees with an undeveloped crown is strictly prohibited, so I tie them. The root system grows much faster than the crown, so it is impractical to place seedlings too close. The best time to prune the crown, which quickly becomes very dense in the absence of care, is spring before flowering. The circulation of internal juices during this period did not reach the peak of activity. Many years of experience in growing Candy has shown that the variety is unpretentious. The main thing at the stage of planting and subsequent growth is to provide the trees with comfortable conditions.

Over the summer and the following winter, the Candy apple tree sapling took root well. By the way, this variety of apple trees tolerates frost very well (I know that it is grown in the Siberian region, in the Novosibirsk and Kemerovo regions, and even in the Krasnoyarsk Territory). Now in place of seedlings there are 3 tall powerful trees (one is already 4.5 meters). The crown is spreading, there is a lot of foliage, the leaves are dark green and very strong. The first crop was harvested 2 years ago (4 years after planting). I will not say that we collect a lot of apples, maybe 20-30 kilograms from one tree. The apples themselves are large, the branches bend directly under their weight, but so that the branch breaks off - this has not happened before. When there is a lot of sun, the fruits are bright yellow with a red blush, and when fully ripe, they are liquid with a very delicate pulp. The apples are very tasty - sweet, aromatic, that's probably why the variety was called “Candy”. There is almost no carrion. Apples have never been stored for a long time, they usually leave us quickly, but once the set aside box lay for two months. But the most delicious are fresh, just picked. One of the disadvantages of the variety is its poor resistance to scab, and although this infection has bypassed our trees so far, I am always ready. I do pruning every autumn until frost. It is necessary. Whitening is also necessary. I rarely water the tree, only when it’s very hot, but if I do it, it’s very abundant. It is a pity that the fruits deteriorate quickly - they cannot be saved for the winter, but I make a very tasty and aromatic jam.

Apples are so good, there are so many of them on one tree, that all costs are compensated. The fact is that this apple tree loves the sun and grows very much! The first time after planting, we cut off the branches, and then it grew to such a height that we couldn't reach it. The apples themselves do not fall well, you have to get them with the help of a ladder. The apple tree belongs to the summer varieties, so in August we are enjoying the harvest. Another plus for the apple tree is that it can be grown here, in the Urals, because even after freezing, the tree quickly recovers: it blooms and bears fruit!

The "Candy" apple tree belongs to the summer varieties and ripens in late July - early August. Like most of the summer varieties of apple trees, the fruits of the Candy variety are stored rather poorly, a maximum of 2-3 weeks in the refrigerator. At the moment, a slightly improved variety Candy - 2 has been bred, these apples are stored and transported a little better. Both of these apple varieties are bred at the N.N. Michurin, during the selection, the main emphasis was on taste and frost resistance, it gives apples really tasty, sweet, juicy and rather large, an apple weighs on average 100 grams, but it is recommended to plant it not north of the Moscow region.Although these geographical divisions are rather arbitrary, many are very successful in growing these varieties in the more northern regions and in Siberia. In the first 5 years, the apple tree is distinguished by rapid growth, begins to bear fruit quite early, an adult tree reaches 4-5 meters in height, 25-55 kg can be harvested from it. apples. Apple tree "Candy" is unpretentious in care, although in cold winters it is better to cover it. The disadvantages I would attribute to the fact that the old tree does not begin to bear fruit every year, therefore, so that there are no breaks, it is necessary to plant new trees on time.

For me, there are no shortcomings in the Candy apple tree, but only advantages. There are not many varieties in Russia that can be harvested in early August. This variety is summer, the apples still hang firmly on the branches, but they are already ripe. The apples are very beautiful and delicious! Their color is bright yellow with a blush. The pulp is soft, aromatic. The apples themselves are small, a little more than 100 grams, but they delight with an early harvest. From our apple tree, and we live in the suburbs, we collect up to 30 or more kilograms of apples. The tree was planted in the spring 6 years ago. They bought it on the market, at a low price, by the way. I went into growth well, I had a wonderful winter. The crown of the apple tree is lush, so we do pruning every spring. This stimulates the formation of fruits and contributes to a less excessive thickening. I did not notice any special pests. In some year there was an invasion of aphids, sprayed with the drug Confidor. Whitewashing of the trunk in early spring saves from ants. There was no scab or powdery mildew. So, it is not a capricious and tasty variety with a good harvest.

Gardeners reviews

Tuleytsev. Krasnoyarsk. “I live in Krasnoyarsk, with a cold climate and low winter temperatures. Several "Candy" apple trees grow on my own summer cottage, which I really liked for their unsurpassed aroma and taste. I take off the harvest at the end of July or at the beginning of August. From an apple tree, I usually collect up to 60 kilograms. Before the cold weather, I will certainly surround the trunk with leaves, straw, grassland peat in order to save the tree for future summer. It is necessary to keep apples cool, they stay in the refrigerator for up to 70 days, but they all do not fit. I store it in the cellar, there they lie in the hay dust for no more than 60 days. Therefore, they need to be processed into preserves, jams, compotes. But it is almost impossible to transport these apples over long distances. "

Kabotoreev. Bryansk. “A Candy Apple Tree has been growing at our dacha for several years now. Already in the third year of life, beautiful apples appeared on it. In reality, their taste was peculiar and extremely sweet. The tree grows quickly. It is undemanding, the leaves from worms and aphids do not fold, as on other apple trees. How nice it is to eat "candy" apples in the summer heat after long cold weather. Due to the significant content of pectins, these apples are suitable for jelly, jam, preserves and marmalades. "

Zortsev. Minsk “Of the“ summer apple trees ”, the most delicious are“ Candy ”and“ Melba ”(they sing by the end of August). And my opinion is this: the variety is ideal for pies and compotes. I do not like sweet varieties, but these apples are like candy - very tasty! It is a pity, they are stored for a very short time. This apple must be eaten from the tree, then all its rich taste is felt, and after lying down, "Candy" becomes like cotton wool or "potato" consistency. "

The harvest

On average, it will be possible to get a crop from this variety only in the 4th year of its life. The rootstock plays an important role in fruiting. For example, on a low-layer basis, it can begin to bear fruit as early as the 2nd year of its life. From the age of 5, the tree produces 30-50 kg of fruit stably. At 10 years old, she can give 100 kg per tree.

candy apple tree

It is worth a very strong stalk. Even after ripening, the apples do not crumble, but remain on it. This is a plus, especially for industrial purposes, where crumbling apple trees are absolutely not appreciated.
