Certain dates can have both beneficial and detrimental effects on the development and growth of a plant. It is for this reason that when planting a specific culture, it is important not to neglect the advice of astrologers.
Lunar landing calendar
Winter garlic is often found in summer cottages. If it is planted correctly, then in the spring it will be possible to harvest an early harvest. The table contains information about auspicious days. It is best to plan planting work for this time.
Month | Favorable days for planting winter garlic |
September | 15-27 |
October | 15-27 |
November | 13-25 |
To find out when to plant garlic before winter in the Moscow region, you should look at the Lunar calendar for 2020. All the information you need is collected here.
For the propagation of winter garlic, several methods are used: with chives, single-cloves, air bulbs. Each of the options has its own characteristics.
Planting with air bulbs is carried out in September. To do this, you need to place the planting material in the ground to a depth of 2 cm. Before that, humus or mineral fertilizers must be added to the soil.
Note! To prevent the bulbs from rotting, they must be planted 3 weeks before the expected frost. In this case, the air temperature should already drop to 14 degrees.
And yet, how to calculate when to plant garlic in the Moscow region in 2016? The optimal time for planting is from late September to mid-October. However, if you want to try to grow a plant from bulbs, then you need to sow them in April. Not everyone is checking the lunar calendar today, but natural cycles have not been canceled. Therefore, the most favorable days for planting are September 12, 19, 20, 21, 24.
If the weather is too warm, then it is better to postpone the event for the next month. Then you can plant the cloves on October 17, 18, 26 and 27. In this case, the golden mean is very important: if you are late, then the vegetable will not have time to take root and will partially freeze out in winter, and otherwise it will sprout and freeze.
Unfortunately, the People's Calendar for September and October doesn't give us any advice on when to plant garlic. Therefore, we immediately turn to the Lunar calendar for 2020. Again, we turn to several sources.
According to the large lunar calendar, published in the magazine "1000 Tips for Summer Residents", favorable days for planting garlic before winter will be:
- from 17 to 19 September inclusive,
- September 26 and 27,
- September 30th,
- from 4 to 7 October inclusive,
- from 15 to 17 October inclusive,
- from 19 to 21 October inclusive,
- from 23 to 25 October inclusive,
- 27th October,
- from 1 to 3 November inclusive.
The days of the New Moon and Full Moon are unfavorable for planting all plants:
- September 14 and September 28, 2020,
- October 14 and October 28, 2020.
- November 12 and November 26, 2020.
Thanks to the blog reader Irina, whose household plot is located in the Ryazan region, we learned that under favorable weather conditions, planting garlic is possible in early November. If you also had to plant garlic in November, the good days according to the lunar calendar for planting it will be: November 1, 2 and 3.
Features of the propagation of garlic bulbs for a large harvest
Bubbles are small cloves of garlic that form in a so-called "air bulb".The air bulb, in turn, is formed from an arrow of garlic, which experienced gardeners, as a rule, cut off or twist in a knot when caring for a garden bed and a vegetable.
They are not edible, but they are quite suitable for planting. But in order for a good harvest to be born from small cloves next year, you need to plant them in the ground correctly.
They are harvested at the end of summer after the ripening of the garlic. Preference should be given to seeds originating in the arrows of large and strong garlic.
The husked bulbs are carefully sorted, avoiding glassy and dried cloves getting into the seedlings. Such garlic is planted in the garden not as usual, but rather like carrot seeds, often in bulk.
Unfortunately, it is almost impossible to grow large garlic from them in one year. Therefore, ready-made and sorted seeds are first planted separately, usually in the spring, allowing them to grow a little in the warm season.
Then they dig out the slightly grown cloves in mid-August and re-plant them before winter as ordinary garlic seeds.
Choosing seeds
At first glance, there is no difference between winter and spring species. However, it was not in vain that the breeders carried out such work and proposed different varieties. This must be taken into account if you are thinking about when to plant garlic in the suburbs. In order to achieve a good result, it is important to choose the one that will grow best in your area.
- An excellent Dutch variety Messidor, fruitful and winter hardy, it will definitely become your favorite.
- Violet Kharkovsky is also a well-known variety that is practically not susceptible to diseases.
- Yubileiny Gribovsky is one of the oldest and most successful varieties, with a very pungent taste and high yield.
For planting garlic in the fall, not only slices of this culture can be used, but also airy bulbs-bulbs and one-toothed ones. Slices need to be selected only from large heads, in which there are no more than 5 cloves. Bulb should be collected from fully formed airy inflorescences that grow on the arrows of the garlic.
The material selected for planting should be well examined and those seeds that are damaged by insects and have traces of rot should be removed. It is necessary to divide the garlic into cloves just before planting, so that the bottoms do not have time to dry out.
The choice of varieties for planting
In the Moscow region, it is recommended to plant zoned varieties that are adapted not only to temperature indicators, but are also suitable for growing by the type of soil. The most in demand are winter varieties with high productivity, which are characterized by the presence of a flat-round head. These are the varieties: "Griboyedovsky", "Soyuz", "Komsomolets".
The varieties "Novosibirsk", "Zubrenok" have a round head and a pungent taste. Among the zoned species, the Nadezhny variety occupies a special place: with high productivity, it shows good keeping rates, which is unusual for winter species.
Planting time for winter garlic in the Moscow region
This type of garlic should be planted in the ground in October, namely, if you look at the Lunar calendar, then the dates there are 15, 20, 27 October 2020.
You can also plant in November, but this is for certain regions where it is warm.
In general, it is worth understanding that the main rule for planting garlic is planting it before the arrival of cold weather, frost. The approximate limitation is that they will come in 30 to 45 days. In other words, if your temperature outside is two weeks 10 12, then this culture should be planted in the soil, because persistent cold weather will soon come.
Remember that if you plant garlic early in the primer, it will germinate, and this is an early death ... And if you plant too late, it will not take root and freeze, and nothing good will come of it either.
Another remark and condition for garlic to give a good harvest, it must be planted at the correct phases of the moon.As usual, on the full moon and new moon, no gardening work should be done. And also on the waxing moon.
1. Prepare the soil for planting in advance, walk with a cultivator or ordinary shovel. And also you need to take planting material, I personally never process it.
2. As for the garlic, I have a Belarusian variety, as shown in this photo, it is white with a purple tint.
Use the largest cloves, but renew the garlic periodically from the bulbs. It is preferable to use your own garlic than to buy it in stores or supermarkets, it is better then buy it from your grandmother in the market, where it is at least your own home.
Break the garlic into chives and remember to do this just before planting.
Plant enough garlic for food, harvesting, and planting.
3. So, start planting. There are many different options for this activity.
I always prefer to do it easily and quickly, without any hassle. How I do it, I need two tools - a rake and a shovel.
With the help of a rake, or rather its handle, make such a ruler so that it is even. And with a scoop, make indentations, turn the scoop over and use a handle to make holes in the ground. My garden is not very large, so I plant in three grooves, you can do more at your discretion.
You can go with another option, take a board and make notches on it for convenience, and the indentations can be made with an ordinary peg.
4. Divide the head of garlic into cloves, prepare for work. I hope you know where the tops are and where the roots are. Who has forgotten, then be sure to look at this picture, because you must plant the roots in the ground.
We suggest that you familiarize yourself with: Features of growing cabbage varieties Kazachok detailed description
5. In our case, place one clove of garlic vertically in the groove you made, and in no case do not press it, but just carefully put it and cover it with earth. No need to water.
Then skip 10-15 cm, move the stalk and make three indentations, plant the garlic. And so on until the bed ends.
6. When all the cloves are planted, sprinkle well again with earth, using a rake.
7. And of course compact, also with a rake.
It's so easy, quick and simple to do this job!
Due to the fact that in the Moscow region in recent years the arrival of winter has been constantly shifting one way or the other, even experienced summer residents do not always have time to plant garlic in autumn. Planting of this culture should be carried out no later than 2-2.5 weeks before the first real frost on the soil for the bulbs.
When planting with teeth, planting of the seed should be carried out 4-4.5 weeks before the real cold weather.
It is necessary to plant garlic before winter in 2020 at such a time that it has time to give roots in the ground, but does not sprout with greens in the garden. According to the usual calendar, this time in the current year falls on the last week of October. In the event that the autumn is dry for a long time, then planting can be postponed to the first decade of November.
When choosing the most favorable days for planting in the fall, many gardeners use the data of the current lunar calendar. With its help, you can get large yields by choosing the exact date of planting. According to this criterion, planting garlic before winter in 2020 in the Moscow region according to the lunar calendar should be either for the first time of the week - from 11 to 15, or at the end of the month - from 24 to 26 October.
Experienced summer residents and gardeners confirm that garlic planted in the phases of the moon winters well and gives a good harvest in spring.
When planting too early, garlic will have time not only to take root, but also to give green shoots even before the onset of frost and the first snow cover.The timing of sowing determines the survival rate and germination of garlic arrows so that they do not fall under the first frosts, and can appear already on the soil covered with snow.
If planted in frozen soil, the seed will simply freeze and will not be able to take root.
To get a good harvest of garlic in the spring, you need to apply the correct turnover of garden crops. Do not grow the same type of vegetables in one place. Garlic is no exception.
In this way, soil depletion can be avoided and a good breeding ground for a new crop of another garden crop can be obtained. Winter crops allow rational use of the available land in use.
Before planting garlic, you need to find out which precursors are most preferred. It is best to plant the culture after zucchini, peppers, cucumbers, eggplants. Do not use garlic as a precursor.
The choice of planting material
The preferences of summer residents and gardeners in the choice of spring or winter garlic for planting are divided. It is better to choose a vegetable for planting based on the requirements for growing a certain variety.
Whatever variety the vegetable is and at whatever time it is planted, planting material must be selected according to the general external signs of the cloves, and this is:
- sufficient density;
- lack of sluggish places;
- the tooth should not have any places of decay, cracks, damage to the outer shell, holes and cuts.
Spring
To get an excellent harvest of spring garlic, you need to use the most suitable varieties for growing in the Moscow region.
If you have to choose from unfamiliar varieties, then it will be useful to familiarize yourself with the growing requirements, here it is important to take into account the climatic requirements.
Aleisky
The most versatile varieties suitable for planting in the Moscow region are:
- Gulliver... It occupies one of the leading places among spring crop varieties. It multiplies well on different plots of land. The variety is disease resistant and has a high yield. The head weighs over 100 grams and has 5 large teeth.
- Aleisky... Does not lag behind on demand from Gulliver. The variety is popular in all regions of Russia, including the Moscow region. The yield is average with a head weight of about 30 grams.
- Abrek... It is considered one of the best varieties, which is listed in the State Register of Russia. The weight of one head is about 20 grams with 15 small teeth. The variety is very spicy in taste. Can be stored for 10 months.
Winter
Gardeners of the Moscow region prefer planting winter garlic.
Lyubasha
The leaders of winter varieties for this region are:
- Alcor. Refers to mid-season varieties with always the same yield. The head has 5 large teeth, and the scales are lilac. Up to 4 kg of selected garlic can be harvested from one square meter of land.
- Lyubasha... The variety has excellent qualities, for which it is very popular in the Moscow region. It tolerates severe frosts well, can survive in dry weather. The weight of the head is small with a bright spicy taste.
- Podmoskovny... The variety is listed in the State Register and is most relevant for cultivation in the Moscow region. It stands out for its good yield with a bulb weight of about 50 grams. The taste is medium sharp.
Preparation
When garlic is planted before winter in the suburbs, seeds are chosen especially carefully. The teeth should be about the same size, large, and not damaged. If at least one in the bulb has spots, traces of mold, exudes a putrid aroma, then the whole head is infected, and you need to get rid of it.
It is necessary to divide the onion into cloves already before directly placing it in the soil. Otherwise, a dry crust forms on the bottom, and the clove will not take root. However, we were a little hasty. First, dry the ripe head well by hanging it in the shade in a well-ventilated place.And then place in a manganese solution for 3 minutes. After that, take out the head, and, disassembling it into cloves, plant it in the prepared bed.
Preparatory work
First you need to choose a bed for planting. The culture prefers to grow in a well-lit area without shade. The soil must be nutritious.
Immediately before planting seeds, the soil must be fertilized. To do this, humus, superphosphate, potassium salt must be added to the soil. After all the manipulations, the bed should be dug up, leveled with a rake. If necessary, you can add sand.

Having dealt with when
in 2020, you need to familiarize yourself with the planting process. For this you need:
- divide the site into grooves 15 cm deep;
- pour sand, wood ash at the bottom of each;
- lay out the seed, observing the distance between the bulbs at 5 cm, between the slices at 15 cm;
- sprinkle the barbs with soil.
The planting depth of the bulbs should be no more than 3 cm, the cloves should be no more than 5 cm. If it was not possible to plant the garlic on time, then the planting material must be placed deeper into the ground. This will protect the seeds from freezing.
At the end, the crops need to be mulched. For this, you can use straw, peat with sawdust. With the onset of cold weather, the beds will have to be covered with roofing material.
You can remove mulch only in spring, after the snow melts. Dry soil can be loosened. After all, the time has come to take care of the crops.
Planting onions in the fall before winter in the suburbs
To obtain a large harvest in the spring, you need to select varieties zoned for this area that are suitable for winter planting.
In the Moscow region, with its unpredictable winters, such varieties of garlic bred by domestic breeders have proven themselves especially well:
- Sail;
- Spas;
- Gribovsky;
- Alcor;
- Belorussian;
- Moscow region;
- Lyubasha.
They are distinguished not only by high yield, but also by excellent taste. These varieties can be stored for a long time. They are not afraid of frost. These varieties are distinguished by resistance to diseases and pests of garden crops.
They are distinguished by a large head size and an abundant number of denticles on it.
Garlic varieties Belorussky, Podmoskovny and Alkor are distinguished by excellent winter hardiness. Large heads ripen in the varieties Lyubasha, Spas and Belorussky. Such varieties as Yubileiny and Gribovsky are not afraid of drought, mold and fungus. By choosing the right variety of winter garlic, the summer resident will be able to provide himself with this useful spicy vegetable for the whole year.
It depends on the region. That is why today we are talking about when to plant garlic in the Moscow region. Winter garlic is grown in autumn, so that, after stratification, in early spring, the cloves will sprout friendly sprouts. For this, the garden bed on which the radish or early cabbage grew is perfect. This means that the crop was harvested from it no later than July, and until the end of summer, it was no longer planted.
Now comes the fun part. It is impossible to say for sure when to plant garlic in the winter in the Moscow region. Planting in the ground should be carried out 40 days before frost. In this case, each clove will have time to develop excellent roots, but the greenery will no longer appear, since the air temperature is too low.
First, I suggest looking at the lunar calendar and looking at auspicious dates.
So, if you are a resident of the northern regions of our country, then you need to start planting winter garlic in September. At the same time, it is better if you do this on the waning Moon during the Root Days, that is, the Moon must pass through the fertile signs of the Zodiac.
In September, these will be the following days: September 2, 10-13, 19.
We suggest you familiarize yourself with: How to Freeze Bell Peppers For Winter (4 Ways)
But for most of the inhabitants of Russia, garlic is planted before winter in October. The lunar calendar recommends the following favorable dates: 6, 8, 9, 11, 12 October.
If November is warm, then it can also be used for planting on the following days: November 5-7.
December we take into service only if climatic conditions allow it: December 11-14, 17.
But it is not recommended to sow garlic in 2020 on the following days:
- in September - 1, 6, 16, 20;
- in October - 5, 6, 16;
- in November - 4, 8, 9, 10, 18;
- in December - 1-3, 18, 29.
And since we have decided on the dates of planting, we move on to the next moment - how to plant this vegetable correctly.
Immediately I will answer many of those of interest to the question: "After what can you plant garlic?"
But where potatoes or onions grew, it is better not to plant garlic. Also, do not set up a planting site on the site where you applied manure this year. Otherwise, the plant will give abundant tops and loose heads, well, it will be susceptible to fungal diseases.
Now let's talk about choosing a garden bed for growing this vegetable.
First, find the most fertile soil on the site with normal or low acidity. Make a garden bed on the sunny side, while placing it from north to south.
Second, prepare the soil in advance. From late August to early September, it needs to be fertilized. So, for each square meter of area, add 10 kg of humus, 1 glass of chalk or 2 glasses of ash, then add 2 tbsp. tablespoons of potassium sulfate and 1 tbsp. a spoonful of superphosphate. Spread all this evenly over the soil, and then dig up the ground. In this case, the digging depth should be at least 20 cm.
After fulfilling the above conditions, proceed to the formation of the garden.
It is desirable that the bed be up to 1 m wide and up to 25 cm high.
Then allow time for the soil to settle. That is, just leave the bed alone so that the soil settles after digging. By the way, if September is not very rainy, then for better shrinkage, you can spill the prepared soil with water several times.
The next stage is tillage. This work is needed in order to prevent diseases of garlic. Treat the earth with a 1% solution of copper sulfate at the rate of 1 tbsp. spoon for 10 liters of water. Spill the entire area of the garden with a solution using a watering can, and then cover it with foil.
But on the eve of planting garlic on the surface of the garden, you can scatter urea (10-20 grams per 1 sq. M) and pour water over the soil.
Next, you need to directly prepare the spicy vegetable itself. Usually the following material is used for reproduction:
- Chives (heads of garlic are divided into parts);
- Seeds (bulbs).
The easiest way to get a good harvest is from cloves. Therefore, let's look at the stages of preparing this planting material.
1. Disassemble the head into teeth.
First, inspect the garlic and disassemble the heads into individual cloves. Select the largest and healthiest of them.
2. Disinfect the teeth.
To do this, soak the cloves for a day in a 0.1% solution of potassium permanganate or 1% solution of copper sulfate.
That's all, the garlic is ready for winter planting in open ground.
And now it's time to disassemble the technology of planting a vegetable in the fall.
1. Make holes.
On the prepared bed, mark the planting site for the cloves. Take a stick and make holes in the soil at a distance of 10 cm from each other. The depth should be from 3 to 15 cm (here it all depends on the method and time of planting).
The distance between the rows is 20-25 cm.
2. Deepen the chives.
Just spread the cloves into the holes. At the same time, it is not necessary to press them into the ground, because this will delay root formation.
3. Work the land.
Spill the earth with a pink solution of potassium permanganate.
4. Fill in the wells.
Cover the wells with rotted compost.
5. Mulch the bed.
For this procedure, use peat, pine needles, or fallen leaves. The optimal mulch layer is about 10 cm.
As a matter of fact, these are all the secrets of planting and caring for winter garlic! And by the way, do not forget that the vegetable's place of residence needs to be changed every two years.
If you want to use the second material for planting - seeds or bulbs, then watch the following video plot. I'm sure you will succeed. ?
Well, in the end, I would also like to pay attention to what are the favorable days for the correct planting of vegetable crops for certain regions of our country.
Planting garlic before winter for residents of the Moscow region according to the lunar calendar of 2020
Recommended days are October 11-12. Although many believe that this crop should be planted before the Day of the Intercession, that is, before October 14.
Planting garlic in the fall before winter for the inhabitants of Siberia
Here, the landing dates are as follows: mid-September, that is, the period from 22 to 30 September.
Planting garlic before winter in the Urals
For residents of the Urals, the correct dates will be the numbers 16, 20, 21, 22, 23 October. Well, if you are from the South Urals or the Middle, then focus on these dates: October 25, 26, 27, 28, 29, 30.
That's all I wanted to tell you about today. I hope that you will not have any difficulties in planting garlic and the next year will be especially fruitful. All good mood and see you soon!
Before the first frosts, a kind of rooting, strengthening should take place, the plant will have time to accumulate strength for future "hibernation". In the climate of the Moscow region, these processes take from 40 to 50 days.
On a note! Garlic planted too late in the soil will germinate, however, its yield will be lower. If green shoots appear before frost, the plant will not survive.
You can focus on the last week of September or mid-October. Weather forecasts can be inaccurate in such a long term, but you can calculate the time based on the general situation during the year. The later the high summer temperatures stabilize, the later the frosts will begin. With rare exceptions in the middle lane, this principle always works.
For landing in the ground, there are favorable and forbidden days according to the lunar calendar, which are also better to adhere to. The dates are shifted annually, so it is advisable to check the calendar. In 2018, it is recommended to refrain from sowing on September 16, October 1, 16, 29. The most favorable time will be from 10 to 13 October. Planting these days can be done both outdoors and indoors.
Garlic cannot be classified as a difficult crop to care for; it almost always sprouts and yields a harvest. However, in order to get large heads with a small number of fleshy slices that will be stored for many months, it is necessary to carefully choose the variety and place. These factors have the greatest influence on the final result of planting before winter.
The whole variety of species and varieties can be conditionally divided into those that will end up with an arrow and those that do not give such shoots with seeds. If there is no goal to get seed from your own garden, you can choose non-shooting garlic, it is easier to care for it, it is better stored. Arrows are useful not only from the point of view of obtaining seeds, but also as a food product, namely as a seasoning. The abundance of vitamins, original smell and bright taste are appreciated by gourmets and fans of authentic Russian cuisine.
We suggest that you familiarize yourself with: How many beets can you eat per day, boiled
Freeze varieties tolerate well:
- Sail;
- Novosibirsk;
- Broadleaf;
- Dungan local;
- Gribovsky 80.
On a note! The varieties brought from Greece and Italy are becoming popular. In conditions of a rather harsh and long winter, they may not survive or give a significantly lower yield. Therefore, it is better to opt for regional varieties that were developed specifically for winter crops in the Central region of Russia.
When choosing between varieties, it should be understood that the number and weight of cloves will also differ. Arrowhead species are distinguished by a small number of large shares. Non-projectile ones have a larger number of teeth, each of which is medium in size.
How to properly plant a plant in the fall in the open field so that the garlic grows large
We figured out the favorable planting dates, now I propose to consider how to plant the plant correctly in order to harvest a good harvest. In fact, everything is very simple, garlic, in itself, is not a whimsical culture. But there are a number of rules that must be followed when growing. I propose to consider everything in order from soil preparation to harvesting.
After what crops to plant winter garlic in autumn
Absolutely every crop that is grown on our site absorbs useful and nutrients. Accordingly, after a while the soil is depleted. In this regard, it is recommended, before planting a new crop, to plant a plant that will restore the fertility of the land. This agronomic technique is called fruit change, it prevents the complete depletion of soil reserves.
Our hero has a short root system and when grown, it significantly depletes the topsoil. Therefore, in front of this one, it is best to plant plants with a long root system, which will feed from the deep layers of the earth.
The best predecessors are cereals (in addition to barley and oats), since these are super-class green manures that increase the quality of the soil. The culture will also grow well after clover and alfalfa (forage grasses), zucchini and squash.
But there are also such plants after which it is impossible to plant: carrots, beets, potatoes, onions.
I know that many are still faced with the question - is it possible to plant garlic after garlic? It is possible, but not desirable! After all, if you grow on the same site, then pests and pathogens will remain. Therefore, if the territory allows you, then grow in different places.
Experienced gardeners recommend keeping 3-4 years between planting.
Follow the crop rotation and planting rules, then you will definitely have an excellent harvest!
Preparing the soil before planting, how to fertilize the land?
It is necessary to prepare the land for planting in advance, at least two weeks, and preferably a month. You need to choose a place that is sunny, in which water does not stagnate, and then the plant will receive enough light and will not die from excess moisture.
Try to plant from north to south, this is the most optimal location.
Our protagonist prefers soft, loose soil filled with nutrients. So that the soil has excellent air and water permeability and neutral acidity. Therefore, you need to immediately clear the area of debris and weeds. Then dig deep (18-20 cm) and fertilize:
Then level the dug area and compact it a little.
Do not plant in overly dense, acidic or clayey soil. However, clay soil can be made loose by adding sand or peat.
Preparing beds for planting garlic in the fall
We have already found out above that garlic will not grow in those places where water stagnates at the roots. Therefore, you need to choose a planting site where rain water will not accumulate. If there is no particular choice, then it is worth equipping the garden bed with an edging made of slate, brick, boards or plastic.
The height of such a structure should not exceed 20 cm.
A high bed will not let the rain wash out the soil and it will be good and quickly warm up with the spring sun
It is possible to make such a klaptik of earth in bulk without "sides", but with a fence it is still more effective.
When the bed is prepared, we "forget" for it until planting. During this time, the soil will be considerably compacted, which is what we need.
How to process the cloves before planting
Before planting, the head is disassembled into teeth, only large, whole, dry and not spoiled teeth are selected.
I want to emphasize once again that the head is disassembled just before planting, right in the garden, and not a week or a month earlier.
Before planting this spicy-tasting vegetable, you must decontaminate it. There are several processing options:
- Immerse in a weak solution of potassium permanganate overnight,
- Soak the cloves overnight in a 1% solution of copper sulfate in a ratio of 1 teaspoon to 1 bucket of water,
- Dilute a solution of 3 tbsp. tablespoons of kitchen salt for 1/2 teaspoon of a bucket of water, lower the garlic for 2 minutes, then immediately lower it for 1 minute in a solution of copper sulfate (see the proportions in point # 2). After all these manipulations, rinse the cloves in clean water and plant them in the ground.
Before planting, the cloves must be dried from moisture.
It is up to you to decide which option to choose, but I highly recommend disinfecting the planting material.
Scheme of planting garlic in open ground: at what depth and at what distance to plant
The scheme for planting a winter vegetable is approximately as follows: grooves are made along the distance from each other 25 cm - 35 cm, the depth of which is 6-8 cm (the size of the clove also plays a very important role, it is necessary that there is a distance of 4-5 cm from the ground surface to the clove .). And the teeth grew at a distance of about 8-10 cm from each other (palm length). Make the holes a convenient inventory for you, it can be pegs, a hoe, a garden shovel).
Take care and sprinkle a small amount of wood ash in each hole - this is the best fertilizer for garlic for the whole winter.
When the planting material has been prepared, you need to carefully put the cloves on the bottom of the hole and sprinkle it with earth. It is impossible to press in the tooth, as it can be damaged.
When to water
Watering in autumn is not worth it, because it is already rainy season. And the plant cannot grow rapidly so that frost hits.
If possible, mulch the bed with a layer of sawdust or dried grass, mulch will save crops from severe frosts, keeping moisture in the ground.
Processing and feeding garlic in spring
Spring feeding is an important stage in growing, which is difficult to overestimate. And the correct application of fertilizers will increase the yield several times!
Without top dressing, this fragrant crop can turn yellow or become lethargic.
Wood ash for garlic is a source of nutrition, a prophylactic agent against diseases.
And one more important point, if you planted a variety that forms an arrow, then it will then need to be cut off. Otherwise, the plant will grow small, and the yield will decrease by about a third. And if you leave these air arrows until ripe, then you get a great seed.
Care activities
In the spring, garlic needs proper care. Regular weeding, feeding and watering are mandatory procedures. All activities must be carried out on time, in this case it will be possible to get a high-quality harvest.
Top dressing
Winter garlic reacts well to fertilizing with mineral fertilizers. The first procedure will be required in early spring. To do this, you need to mix superphosphate, potassium sulfate, ammonium nitrate and pour it under the root of the plants.
The second feeding is needed in a month, and the third - when the heads become the size of a walnut.
Note!
You can use urea to feed the garlic. Watering should be done once a month.
Loosening the soil
Finding out when in 2020 you need to plant garlic before winter in the Moscow region is not enough. It is necessary to familiarize yourself with the technology of growing crops. Loosening and weeding are mandatory procedures. They need to be done several times a week. It is advisable to do this after rain or watering.
Soil moistening
Garlic has a negative attitude towards waterlogging. Therefore, it is required to water it no more than 1 time a week. The first procedure is necessary in May along with feeding. Watering should be stopped one month before harvest.
Removing arrows
If the summer resident wants to get strong garlic, then the arrows must be removed in time. To do this, it is advisable to carefully cut or break off, this should be done at a height of 10 cm.
Winter garlic will not cause any trouble to the owner. If he managed to take root by winter, then he will perfectly endure the cold season and in the spring will delight you with friendly shoots.If you want to surely protect the plantings, then mulch the soil well and cover it with roofing material. In the spring, before the sprouts awaken, it will be necessary to remove the covering material and slightly rake the mulch layer so that it is easier for the sprouts to make their way to the sun.
Immediately after planting, no watering or feeding is required. A large amount of moisture will only increase freezing. If there is little snow before severe frosts, you can manually increase the layer on the beds themselves to create additional protection from the cold.
In the spring, immediately after the first shoots, it is necessary:
- weed;
- loosen up;
- water abundantly.
Watering continues until mid-July in the Moscow region. Top dressing should be carried out after the first true leaves appear in an amount of about 3-4 pieces. The following solution works well: dilute 1 spoon of urea in a bucket of water, leave for half an hour, pour at the rate of 1 liter per 2 square meters.
Growing winter garlic is not difficult in the temperate climate near Moscow. The correct choice of varieties and soil preparation, subsequent top dressing will increase the yield by 30-40 percent.
Care rules after landing
The advantage of sowing in autumn is the minimum maintenance of the soil for the coming winter months. From October to February-March, the culture does not need additional care. This is the dormant time when the cloves are preparing for the rapid spring germination.
In the spring, when the time for the arrival of heat comes, the mulch is removed and the first mineral dressing is carried out. The soil is loosened, calcium sulfate or ammonium nitrate is added. Mineral fertilizers contribute to the growth of cloves, saturation of the soil with nutrients after the winter.
When the first shoots appear, the row spacings must be loosened. This is necessary so that the soil is saturated with oxygen, the processes that promote germination are activated. After germination, the stage of soil moisture control begins. To form the head, it is necessary to ensure a constant moderate soil moisture. After each abundant watering, loosening between the rows is repeated.
When green leaves appear above the ground, watering with saline is carried out. This technique helps to protect the crop from infection at the stage when the sprouts are gaining growth.
Reference! The formation of a crust on the soil must not be allowed, which prevents the saturation of the soil, blocks the flow of oxygen.
At the stage of active head formation, when part of the head is visible from the soil, the final top dressing is carried out. If the arrows turn yellow at the base, then water the bed with nitroammophos. If the tip of the stem turns yellow and dries, then superphosphate or ammonium nitrate is used to water the ridge.
Successful wintering is the key to an excellent harvest
The weather conditions of winter and spring greatly affect the winter hardiness of the plant. So, for example, if thaws occur in winter, garlic winters worse. Returning spring frosts can also harm plants if they have already woken up and have begun to germinate.
Snow helps garlic to successfully endure the winter. In Central Russia, the snow cover, as a rule, is good enough for wintering garlic. Snow protects plantings from freezing in winter, and nourishes in spring. Therefore, if there is little snow in the beds with winter garlic, it is recommended to add it there in order to increase the winter hardiness of the culture.
Winter garlic can freeze out under unfavorable winter conditions. That is why in the northern regions they prefer the spring method of growing.
It is with these thoughts that you need to get down to business. I would like to note one more point. Since it is impossible to say exactly when to plant winter garlic in the Moscow region, you need to focus on long-term forecasts, as well as on your observations. Basically, you are required to be able to predict when and how winter will begin.
How to plant bulb garlic in the fall?
I think it's not a secret for anyone that the seed should be periodically renewed so that diseases of the vegetable do not accumulate. Planting bulbs is a wonderful way to get a healthy crop.
However, there is one feature of this method of growing, the harvest will be only in the second year, and not the next. Because in the first year a clove will grow from the bulb, and in the second year a full-fledged head will grow from the clove.
For a more detailed planting process, I suggest watching in the video, where the author tells in detail how and what to do in order to grow large garlic from the bulbs
After what crops is it best to plant winter garlic
Garlic is often attacked by fungal and viral diseases. It is undesirable to use chemical agents. Biofungicides should be preferred. They can handle crops until the harvest itself.
If the procedure was carried out correctly, but the plants began to die, it means that other ailments made themselves felt. It can be powdery mildew, white rot, leaf rust. In this case, it will not be possible to do without chemicals.
Garlic is often attacked by pests. The most dangerous are onion fly, ticks, stem nematode. To prevent insects from damaging other plants, the seeds of garlic must be pickled before planting, and the soil must be treated with bioinsecticides.
Advice!
It is necessary to plant marigolds, calendula near the beds with garlic. The smell of these plants repels pests.
Garlic is an indispensable product for the gardener
Garlic has been known to man for over five thousand years. In ancient times, it was cultivated in Greece, Rome, Egypt, Palestine and China. In ancient Egypt, garlic was one of the staple foods of the common people. The workers involved in the construction of the pyramids also used it as a medicine to protect against all kinds of diseases of the gastrointestinal tract.
Today garlic is a popular spice used all over the world, especially in Mediterranean cuisine. In France, Greece and Spain, special garlic sauces are served, added to meat and vegetables. This plant is also used as a main ingredient in salads, marinades, cold cuts and soups. In addition, garlic helps keep vegetables, fish and meat fresh.
Garlic cloves can also be used in animal feeding - the substances in this plant increase the natural resistance of pigs and poultry to parasites.
Garlic can also be used as a natural plant care product on the site. Garlic water is used to spray the plants to protect them from pests.
Getting started landing
First you need to dig up the area to the depth of the shovel bayonet and level the ground well with a rake. Now you need to make shallow furrows for the subsequent planting of the teeth. All that remains is to disinfect the soil. To do this, prepare a salt solution: 3 tablespoons in a bucket of water.
The teeth are planted shallowly, usually 1-2 cm. The maximum allowable depth is 7 cm. There is a little trick here. It is quite difficult to calculate exactly when to plant garlic in the fall. In the Moscow region, autumn can stand warm for a long time, and the gardener will postpone planting every time. And suddenly, without warning, it starts to get colder.
The distance between your cloves should be at least 8 cm. Feel free to leave 20-25 cm between the rows. After embedding the cloves in the soil, be sure to mulch them with a layer of peat, at least two centimeters. You can replace it with a mixture of earth and sawdust. Such a layer will reliably protect plantings even if the ground starts with frosts, not snowfalls.
Saline treatment
Many summer residents process crops with garlic with a saline solution. This procedure helps to get rid of flying insects. To prepare the composition, you need to mix 250 g of salt in 10 liters of water.
The solution should be sprayed on the plants from a spray bottle.It is best to leave the composition overnight, and in the morning water the plantings with plain water. This procedure should be carried out every 10 days.
When to plant garlic before winter in the Moscow region, the Lunar calendar for 2020 will tell you. This is a good "advisor" to all amateur agronomists. With its help, you can find out on which days it is worth doing a particular job. If all activities are carried out on time, you will be able to get a good harvest. Isn't this the main task of the gardener?

Do I need to cover the garlic?
Every time gardeners face the question: is it necessary to cover the garlic during the winter, as well as what material is best to use for this purpose and when to cover it. To answer all these questions, you should read the videos, photos, read the advice and opinions of experienced gardeners.
Garlic planted before winter is covered to protect against:
- A sharp cold snap followed by a short-term thaw during winter. It causes icing and death of landings.
- Drying out of the earth during a long absence of precipitation at temperatures from zero to plus nine degrees.
- Waterlogging of the land due to the rapid melting of snow.
- Early formation of arrows due to unfavorable weather conditions.
- Overgrowing of beds with weeds.
For the timely emergence of seedlings of culture, to obtain excellent quality, it is necessary to use soil mulching. Productivity will increase when only organic materials are used for mulching.
