How to properly plant garlic for the winter: recommendations

To plant garlic in the winter correctly, you need to understand what kind of culture it is and what its requirements are. After planting the clove, the plant begins to build up the root system. For successful wintering, the roots should grow 10 cm, and green feathers should not show up from the soil.

The winter landing plan is as follows:

  1. We take into account the landing dates.
  2. Choosing a place.
  3. Soil preparation.
  4. Preparation of planting material.
  5. Planting cloves or bulbs.
  6. Care and feeding.

Now let's consider all the points in more detail.

Auspicious days

For planting garlic in 2020, the most successful time is selected in the fall before the onset of persistent cold weather. The largest and most juicy heads are obtained from slices planted in mid-autumn. If the garlic is planted in November, it does not have time to root well. With early planting, at the beginning of autumn, the slices not only have time to form roots, but also start growing. In both cases, the planting material dies during winter frosts.

The timing of planting a vegetable is influenced by many factors. When choosing a successful period for planting a vegetable, they are guided by the peculiarities of the climate in the region. The phases of the moon are important. According to them, the most favorable days for planting garlic in 2020 are determined.

Lunar calendar

Experienced vegetable growers take into account the data of the Lunar calendar when planning gardening works. It is compiled annually, taking into account the phases of the Earth's satellite. The heavenly body during its movement affects plants in different ways.

On the growing moon, the juices rush upward. Therefore, the aboveground part is developing more actively. During this period, the planting of vegetables is favorable, the fruits of which are located above the surface of the soil. On the waning moon, the reverse movement of fluids occurs. Then crops are planted, the edible part of which is underground.

Important! New Moon and Full Moon days are not suitable for planting, transplanting or picking any plants. At this time, only pest treatments or loosening of the soil are allowed.

By region

In the Moscow region, the climate is temperate continental. A steady cooling begins here in mid-November, and by the end of the month real winter weather sets in. In order for the garlic cloves to take root before the frost begins, they are placed in the soil in mid-October. But in the southern part of the Middle Lane, landing is possible in the last days of the month. In the Leningrad region, the climate is noticeably colder. It is windy and slushy here in winter. For planting garlic, days are selected here from September 15 to the end of the month.

In Siberia and the Urals, autumn begins early. But in the second half of September, the warmth returns for a short time - the "Indian summer" begins. Many vegetable growers use this period for planting winter garlic. It is necessary to have time to lower the slices into the soil, while the soil temperature remains at least + 10 ° С. Therefore, if necessary, the vegetable is planted earlier.

In the Far Eastern region, planting days for garlic are chosen from 20.09 to 15.10. In the southern part of Russia, warm weather persists until mid-autumn. Therefore, they do not rush to plant a vegetable crop until the last days of October.

Choosing a place and predecessors

According to the rules of crop rotation, it is better not to plant such a crop after onions and garlic, since they have already taken the necessary substances and compounds from the soil. You should not choose a place where carrots, beets, turnips, late pumpkin grew. After these crops, the soil will not have time to recover by the autumn planting.

The best predecessors are courgettes, eggplants, cucumbers, peppers. They have a short growing season, and they take slightly different compounds and a different concentration of minerals from the soil.

Preparing the soil for planting

A month before planting a garlic culture on a sunny open area or a garden bed, they are covered with humus or compost at the rate of 5-6 kg per square meter, add 20-30 g of superphosphate and potassium salt. You can sprinkle the ground with sifted ash, at a rate of 100 g per 1 m². After these procedures, all the soil is dug onto a shovel bayonet and leveled with a rake.

It is imperative that non-acidic soil should contain sand.

RECOMMENDATION!

We did not indicate that the bed needs to be cleared of the remnants of its predecessors, because by burying the green mass in the ground, you will enrich the soil with useful microelements.

Seed and soil preparation

Winter varieties of garlic are propagated vegetatively in several types: onion slices (cloves); single-toothed bulbs grown from air bulbs (sevkom); air bulbs (bulbs) in culture through the season. Spring varieties reproduce only by teeth (a bud with a growth point and leaf buds).

On a note!

It is not advisable to use store-bought garlic for planting. You need to know the exact variety.

The seed is placed for several weeks in a cool place with a temperature not exceeding 5 ° C. Then the heads are carefully disassembled into slices and sorted out. For planting, only large teeth (about 3-4 centimeters) with a flat surface are suitable. Do not remove the scales of the clove.A head that has grown from a peeled lobule will be poorly stored.

Before planting, the selected material is disinfected with a solution:

  • potassium permanganate (1%);
  • copper sulfate (1%).

The cloves are placed in the solution for 30 minutes and then dried. If ash lye is used, it should take about 2 hours after immersion. Treatment with Fitosporin is acceptable. To speed up the germination of garlic, you can wrap the prepared cloves in a damp cloth and put them in a warm place for 2-3 days (it is better to put them in a plastic bag). Central Asia is the birthplace of garlic, so winter varieties grow better on sandy loam soil. Spring varieties prefer medium and light loamy soils. A good place for planting cloves will be the beds in which they grew last year:

  • legumes;
  • pumpkin;
  • cabbage;
  • cereals.

It is very useful to plant garlic in areas where forage grasses previously grew (alfalfa, sweet clover, clover). It is not recommended to plant in beds after tomatoes or onions. Planting garlic after root crops should be avoided. They drain the soil very much. It is not recommended to use the same site for planting garlic for several years in a row. It is better to use this site for sowing after 3-4 years.

Since garlic is a light-loving plant, it is best to plant it in sunny areas, well protected from gusts of strong winds. If planted on a hill, then stagnation of water in the ground can be avoided. A month before planting, the garden bed is dug to a depth of 20-25 centimeters. If you dig up on the eve of planting, then the seed can go deep into the ground and die due to lack of air. Before planting, it is necessary to well clear the weed from the bed.

Depth of planting garlic before winter

The teeth are planted in pre-prepared grooves. They are made no deeper than 20 cm. It is better to sprinkle the bottom of the grooves with an even small layer of sand. In the steppe and arid zone, many gardeners shed a small amount of water before planting. In the middle lane, this is not necessary, especially in a rainy autumn.

Garlic is planted to a depth of no more than 20 cm.

How far to plant garlic?

Let's combine the data on the depth and landing distance into a convenient table:

MaterialDistance between furrows, cmDistance between bulbs in a row, cmPlanting depth, cm
Bubbles10−155−82
Teeth20−2515−203−4

IMPORTANT!

If you are late with planting, increase the planting depth by 2-3 cm in order to prevent freezing.

The planting material is inserted into the grooves by hand, bottom down and gently pressed into the ground with your fingers. Sprinkle soil or mulch on top in an even layer. If the winter has little snow, then the beds are covered with plant debris, roofing felt or polyethylene. In conditions of abundant snowfall, no covering material is required.

NOTE!

Bulbules will give a large one-toothed onion next year. Having dug a clove at the end of summer and dried it, they plant it again in the fall. An updated variety with a large head grows next year.

Varietal characteristics of garlic

Currently, about 20 varieties of winter garlic and about 10 varieties of spring garlic are known. Not every region can be planted with this or that variety of garlic. Depending on the climatic conditions, the following spring varieties are widespread in the regions:

  1. Northern regions with prolonged cold temperatures - Permyak, Samorodok, Porechye, Uralets, Shunut.
  2. Southern regions with a warm climate - Gulliver, Victorio, Sochi 56.

Simple rules for caring for winter garlic

It is not enough to know how to plant winter garlic correctly, you also need to know how to care for it!

Care begins in April. As soon as the snow melts from the garden, you need to remove 2 cm of mulch. This will make the feathers easier to germinate. Why can't you remove all the mulch? The mulching material protects young shoots and helps to keep them warm. The first watering is done in May, when only memories will remain from the snow, and the soil, obviously, will need moisture. Seedlings are watered regularly. Garlic is fed three times: after the appearance of the first greens, urea or a weak solution of poultry droppings is added in liquid form. The second time the culture needs a solution of nitrophoska (2 tablespoons per 10 liters of water). The last top dressing in June consists of ash (a glass for a bucket of water) or superphosphate (2 tablespoons per 10 liters of water).

IMPORTANT!

Before fertilizing, the bed must be moistened to avoid chemical burns!

In summer, watering is gradually reduced. If the arrows have reached 10 cm, they are broken out, leaving a few pieces to determine the timing of ripening or seed reproduction.

NOTE!

Fried arrows with sour cream are considered a delicacy.

The garlic crop is regularly loosened throughout the growing season.

Is it possible to plant bulbs and one-tooth garlic in autumn

In regions with mild winters, seed garlic is planted in the fall - bulbs, one-tooth. For tiny bulbs, the planting depth is 3-4 cm, they are prone to freezing, therefore, in areas with cold winters, they are planted in spring for growing. In the fall, one-tooth is planted according to the rules for ordinary garlic cloves, observing regional characteristics.

Rules for collecting winter garlic: we remove it on time

The crop is harvested in the middle of summer. Oddly enough, raspberries are a good advisor here. The time when raspberries are actively collected in baskets for jam is considered the best for harvesting garlic. But in order not to be mistaken, it is recommended to navigate by the left arrows. As soon as the arrow opens, and the opened bulbs are shown, and the lower leaves of the plant turn yellow, it's time to harvest.

Garlic is harvested strictly in dry weather!

The plant is carefully dug in with a pitchfork and easily removed from the soil, being careful not to damage the roots. It is better to shake off the entire crop from the soil and put it to dry in a spacious covered place.

What a gardener needs to know

Winter garlic is not afraid of either the first frosts, or a fierce winter, or even more returnable spring drops in temperature, and the tender leaves of spring garlic in spring can be ruined by a sharp drop in temperature.

Planting material in the autumn months boasts larger specimens in front of spring specimens. The larger the planting material, the larger you will end up with a harvest (direct dependence).

Winter species are immune to either diseases or pests, which cannot be said about spring specimens.

Planting garlic before winter does not require special care. In the autumn, the soil is saturated with a sufficient amount of moisture, allowing it to winter well in the cold months.

Harvesting is carried out earlier than during spring planting, which means that in the summer months only representatives of winter varieties are present on store shelves.

Thus, planting garlic in the fall before winter is considered a very profitable business that brings a generous harvest, however, in order for everything to work out, you need to know the timing of the start of planting work.

Each gardener is guided by his own observations. Some, for example, are sure that the best garlic grows if it is planted before the Intercession. Others, on the contrary, try to plant on sunny days after the holiday.
