Black walnut: properties, contraindications, methods of application

Description of culture

Black walnut should not be confused with walnut... Although they belong to the same family, they have significant differences. First of all, this is the growing area, as well as the appearance of the fruits.

The home of the black walnut is North America. It is also cultivated in Russia, but in limited areas. In terms of temperature and humidity conditions, the tree is more suitable for the Stavropol or Krasnodar Territories. In Ukraine, black walnut grows only on the territory of the Krasnokutsk arboretum.

In Europe, the American fruit appeared at the beginning of the 17th century. There is an assumption that he got there with the ships of the Spanish conquistadors: along with the stolen gold, they brought strange plants. Having mastered in a mild, warm climate, the black walnut began to spread to other parts of the Old World and came to Russia under the Latin name Juglans nigra. The English synonym for the species is Black walnut.

The tree requires a large area. Some members of this family live up to 500 years, and grow over 60 m in height. The straight trunk becomes covered with tough bark after 6-8 years, which is also a hallmark of the American walnut. Its wood is often used to make furniture.

The oval leaves are 50 cm long. Unripe green fruits are covered with hairs. The thick peel gives off a pungent aroma, darkens when ripe. The cores inside are very tasty and have a specific smell.

It is interesting! Black walnut differs from walnut in large and strong fruits. It is difficult to break them even with a hammer. After separation of the pericarp, dark streaks remain on the shell. It is because of them that the nuts look black.

For a long time, the medicinal properties of juglans nigra remained unexplored. And only at the turn of the 20th century, they paid attention to the tree. In Russia, the study of the composition, useful properties of black walnut was taken up by specialists from the NPF "FITEKO".

Where is the best place to plant a nut

A tree can live up to seven decades, so you need to find the best place for planting. For those who want to grow on their site one of the most popular types of nut crops, you need to know some specifics.

Attitude to light

The crown of the tree transmits a large amount of light to the soil, creating a mottled shadow.

This promotes leaf fall - the concentration of organic matter in the soil increases. Thanks to this feature, the cultivation of black walnut is used for reclamation purposes.

Attitude to warmth

For normal growth and development, the tree needs an air temperature of +10 ° C.

Fruiting nuts of the presented species are found up to the latitude of St. Petersburg. In the conditions of the Tula climate, the fruit-bearing nut turned out to be more winter-hardy, withstanding an air temperature of -38 ° C. In the scientific description of the black walnut it is indicated: in comparison with the walnut, it is more cold-resistant. But it is inferior in this feature to the Manchu and gray varieties.

In the first three years, a young tree is very sensitive to spring frosts, even in its homeland, North America. After the formation of the crown, changes in cold temperatures are not terrible for the nut.

Relation to moisture

This variety of walnut has an average position in terms of drought resistance between varieties of walnuts and Manchurian nuts.

Botanists recommend planting black walnut in the river floodplain. The tree tolerates short-term floods well. In North America, it can withstand a full month of flooding the trunk without damage to the roots, trunk, and crown.

Attitude to soil

The tree plant does not tolerate acidic soil.

In order to grow a nut from a stone or in other ways, it is advisable to choose a neutral or slightly alkaline soil. In such an environment, trees stop growing in time, preparing for the frosty winter.

If your site for potential planting is in non-black earth conditions, be sure to add wood ash and phosphorus-potassium fertilizers to the planting pit. Further around the trunk, lime fertilizers are applied to maintain the acid-base balance (pH - 5.5-8.2). Avoid excess nitrogen in the plant's soil - the tree will stop growing and the wood will lose its frost-resistant properties. Take care of an acceptable micro-relief of the breeding site for black walnuts. Plants do not tolerate cold winds from the north and north-east.

Chemical composition

Fruits, peels and leaves of the plant contain many vitamins and minerals. They are all sources of nutrients.

Fruit

The useful properties and contraindications of black walnut largely depend on the composition of the kernels, since they are most often the basis of dietary supplements.

Ripe fruits contain eight fatty acids, up to 30% protein and 7% carbohydrates. The juglone found in nuts is of great importance to health. The substance has antifungal, antiparasitic, antimicrobial effect, improves bowel function, restores mucous membranes.

Other useful components contained in fruits are:

  • tannins;
  • bioflavonoids;
  • phytosterols;
  • anthocyanides;
  • organic acids.

Unripe black walnut fruits contain a high concentration of vitamin C, a good antioxidant.
