History of creation
The hybrid form "Strashensky" (accent on "e") was created at the Research Institute of Viticulture and Winemaking of Moldova and is the result of the systematic work of a group of employees of the NGO "Vierul": M. S. Zhuravel, G. M. Borzikova, I. P. Gavrilov, N. I. Guzun. Tests of the new form were carried out near the city of Straseni, by the name of which it was later named.
The parental forms of the hybrid were crossed according to the formula: (("Friendship" on "Catta-Kurgan" on "Dodrelabi") x "Muscat de Saint-Valier").
The breeders were faced with the task of developing a variety that is resistant to droughts and high summer temperatures, with a high sugar accumulation and a large berry. The scientists coped with these tasks perfectly, and as a result, the "Strashensky" variety, also called "Consul", appeared.

Grapes Straseni
Bush and Vine Formation:
The "Strashensky" bush has a high growth force. Annual growth of stems is 5-7 meters. Seasonal ripening of vines wood has high rates and is 80%. It gives a lot of shoots and stepchildren. These qualities make it very beneficial for other rootstock varieties.
The leaf of "Strashensky" is dark, mostly of medium size, slightly folded, has a small white edge on the back side.
The plant needs medium or short pruning. Leave 5-6 horns with eyes. The load of the bushes with 20 fruit buds is optimal. During the formation of the brushes, every third is removed from the fruit arrow, since the variety has large clusters, and overloading the bush will lead to an increase in morbidity and loss of yield.
A feature of the variety is that it has a long flowering time.
The "Consul" form has a bisexual flower structure and is well pollinated. This hybrid is pea if you do not carry out the rationing of the brushes. The grape bushes "Strashensky" are frost-resistant, withstand -24-25 degrees. The yield is 20-25 kilograms per bush.
Landing
It will be more difficult to grow Strashensky grapes correctly if you do not use a detailed description of the variety and agricultural technology, photos of the plant and gardeners' reviews. It is necessary to familiarize yourself in detail with each stage in the development of a grape bush. The first important activity is planting a seedling.
The grapes prefer sunny places without harsh gusts of wind. It is important to pay attention to the depth of the groundwater and the leveling of the surface of the site. The roots of the "Strashensky" variety do not like moisture stagnation, which leads to decay of the system.
In addition, you need to provide the soil with a sufficient amount of nutrients. The more fertile the land, the better the grape harvest. Planting can be scheduled for both autumn and spring. The main thing is to prepare the seat in advance.
For spring planting, fertilizers are applied during autumn digging. Compost or humus works best. One planting pit requires 1 bucket of organic matter and 500 g of superphosphate.If it is decided to plant grape seedlings "Strashensky" in the fall, then fertilizers are applied to the pit prepared in advance 3 weeks before the event.
The size of the planting pit should be such that the roots are sufficiently loose in it. Parameters less than 0.75 m should not be done. The distance between the pits is at least 2.5 m, and between the rows of plants - at least 3 m.
If the site is clayey soil, chernozem or a close location of groundwater, then a drainage layer is required. It is placed at the bottom of the pit using rubble or other suitable material.
On sandy or light soil, drainage can be dispensed with.
A layer of organic matter is laid on top and a support is installed in the center of the pit. The grape bushes "Strashensky" are distinguished by powerful growth, so at first there will not be superfluous support for the seedling.
The seedling is placed in the middle, the roots are straightened and sprinkled with fertile soil.
The ground is lightly tamped and the newly planted plant is watered. It is recommended to mulch the periosteal circle to keep moisture longer. Planting seedlings allows the grapes to take root faster. For planting, select healthy planting material without signs of disease or pest damage, with a good root system.
Important! When buying a seedling, pay attention to the reputation of the manufacturer.
Characteristics of bunches:
Long clusters of 30-40 cm are formed on the bushes, some of them reach 50 centimeters. The weight is different: from 700 to 1500, and sometimes reaches 3500-4000 grams. The bunch is shaped like an elongated cylinder and consists of three approximately equal parts.
Ripening in them is uneven. The upper part of the brush is slightly thicker than the rest, the berries in it, as a rule, ripen first. The middle part is usually very thinned and contains the least amount of berries. The lower part of the bunch is always late with ripening, although there are more berries there than in the middle.
Medium-density brushes.
To accelerate the ripening of the bunches and improve their presentation, they are pruned during flowering, removing the lower third of the bunch.
Breeding history, description and characteristics of the Straseni grape variety
The Straseni grape variety is relatively young, created by Moldovan winegrowers in the seventies of the last century. Included in the State Register in 1989 and recommended for cultivation in the North Caucasus region. It is also cultivated in the Crimea.
A variety of medium ripening. Usually, the berries are completely filled with sweet juice by mid-September. The variety is medium-sized. The vine ripens well. The shoots are strong, each can support the weight of up to 1.2 kg of the crop, thanks to which the plantings of this variety are impressive with their beauty.
The shoots of the grapes Strashensky strong
The leaves are large, medium dissection. Bottom covered with dense pubescence. The flower raceme is large, with bisexual flowers, up to 30 cm long. The variety is characterized by long flowering and ripening of the bunch, therefore, to accelerate the ripening of the crop, some experts advise to shorten the brush by a third.
Straseni grapes are characterized by a long ripening
Massive cylindrical-conical clusters hang on a long stem. Their weight ranges from 600-900 g, there are also giant bunches weighing 1.5 kg.
Bunches of grapes Straseni cylindrical-conical shape
The berries are large, flattened-rounded, loosely located on the brush. The weight of one fruit is 7–10 g, the largest ones reach 12 g. The skin is of medium density, colored in a dark purple color, with a pronounced waxy bloom. Some gardeners note that the berries crack with excessive watering or prolonged rains. Bunches do not tolerate transportation and storage well.
The pulp is crispy, juicy, colorless, but the juice and wine from the Straseni grape variety have a rich noble color.If you crush the berries, very soon the skin pigments will color the juice. Each fruit contains 2-3 seeds.
Table variety. Experts characterize the taste of Strashensky grapes as simple but harmonious, giving fresh berries 8 points out of 10. The fruits are consumed fresh, and they are also used to prepare juices, compotes, wine and natural wine vinegar from them.
Cut shoots are used for grafting or as brushwood. Young green leaves are pickled and used in the preparation of traditional Caucasian dolma.
When describing the variety, an increased resistance to mildew is noted. The Strashensky grapes are moderately resistant to other diseases, as well as to pests: spider mites and phylloxera. Gardeners note that birds and wasps are big fans of dark juicy berries and worsen the presentation of the bunches.
The yield is high. With competent agricultural technology, almost 30 kg of berries are harvested from one bush, or 197.3 centners / ha. If you are late in harvesting a ripe crop, the bunches can be affected by gray rot.
Drought resistance and winter hardiness of the vine is average. Needs shelter for the winter.

Description of berries:
Berries "Consula" are large, spherical, aligned in the brush. The diameter can be 2.5-3.2 centimeters. Berry weight also varies from 8 to 15 grams. Color from dark purple to black with white prune bloom. The pulp itself is light, juicy, sweet, jelly. The bones, from 2 to 4 in each berry, are easy to chew. The berries are covered with a thin skin, which brightly stains the juice in a ruby color when crushed. It rescues grapes from drought very well and does not shrivel. However, the thin skin cannot protect against frequent autumn rains and the berry cracks when the weather is prolonged.
The taste of "Strashensky" does not contain nutmeg, it is usual, but pleasant and harmonious, at the stage of full ripeness - with fruity notes. Sugar accumulation 17-19%, with acidity 6-7 g / l. Tasting score 8 points.
Consul grapes are susceptible to attacks by birds, bees and wasps, so its bunches are placed in fine mesh or gauze bags at the beginning of the berry dyeing period.
Diseases of the variety
Straseni grapes are quite resistant to all kinds of diseases. It is practically not affected by rot or mildew. Spider mites and many other parasites do not settle on it. At the same time, the variety is distinguished by its instability to powdery mildew and gray rot.
To protect the plant from diseases and pests, the following recommendations must be followed:
- harvest in a timely manner - this will help prevent shedding and damage by gray rot;
- carry out preventive treatments - for this you can use a variety of drugs;
- set wasp traps or cover bunches with special nets;
- set scarecrows to protect crops from birds.
Technical characteristics and marketability of the form:
The "Strashensky" variety is intended for consumption raw and is very good as a table variety. There is also a lot of juice in the berries, so you can make wine from it, as well as juices, compotes and other sweet preparations.
The marketability of "Strashensky" is good. It has large clusters, the average weight of which is 1.0+ kg, beautiful large berries with a harmonious taste. In demand in the market. However, the hybrid does not withstand long-term transportation.
Reviews of summer residents
Pleshakov N.V., I have been working in the vineyard since 2009, retired
Despite its scary name, the variety is not that scary. Basically, all agricultural techniques are standard for grapes.
It is advisable not to allow the bush to thicken. This year, I harvested a good harvest at the end of September, I had time before the rains, otherwise it would start to crack.
In general, I like the variety, suit the taste and color, I will continue to work on this variety.
Valery, amateur gardener, Kursk
Here growers write about the usual taste of Strashensky. And I really like it, I have wine, juice for children, and compotes from it.And a few years ago I learned to pickle these grapes, the berries are quite large for this purpose.
The pickling recipe is the same as for pickled tomatoes, only here, instead of tomatoes, berries are separated from the bunch. Try it, a very good appetizer.
Nina Vasilievna, summer resident with experience, Rostov region
I have been studying Strashensky almost from the day when he was certified, and this is somewhere in the second half of the 80s. In general, I like the grapes of the Moldovan selection. They are unpretentious, although they require attention to themselves.
In addition to Strashensky, I also successfully grow Yuzhny, Belaya Krasavitsa, Moldova. The harvest is quite enough for itself and for the market.
Konstantinova Anna 55 years old. Bryansk
I have known Strashensky not very long ago, so maybe I make mistakes in caring for the bushes. The grapes are fine with me, I think its only drawback is its ability to crack before the very harvest.
Features of variety care
Let's highlight the peculiarities of caring for the "Strashensky" variety:
- Planting a new plant in the ground should be carried out in the spring.
- The load on a single bush is no more than 20 fruit buds.
- Antifungal spraying of the vine after every rain.
- It is obligatory to standardize the number of brushes by 1-2 on the shoot.
- Breaking off unnecessary shoots that have emerged from the root and stem of the stem, so that food does not go to them due to the bunches.
- It is also necessary to pinch the length of the bunches by one third during flowering.
- Pinching of stepchildren for 1-2 leaves, especially in the area of bunches.
- Chasing bushes in August, about a month before the berries are fully ripe, so that the vine has time to ripen.
- Bunches that begin to stain must be protected from flying insects and birds.
- In cold regions, cover for the winter.
Treatment against pests and diseases
Strashensky belongs to hybrids, which allowed him to acquire only the best qualities from his parents. The variety has excellent immunity to various types of grape diseases, rot and mildew resistant. Resistance to the first type of disease is estimated as 3 points, resistance to the second - 2 points. Most often it is infected with gray rot and ashtray, but adherence to generally accepted growing rules reduces the risk of their appearance at times. The main ones include:
- periodically check the plant for diseases;
- carry out timely feeding;
- treat planting with drugs for prophylaxis;
- harvest in a timely manner, prevent grapes from rotting;
- avoid damage to berries by wasps and birds, if necessary, cover the bunches.
For the prevention of diseases, grape plantings are sprayed with a solution of Bordeaux liquid with an active substance concentration of 1-3%.
Consumer qualities
The taste of the berries of Stashensky ordinary grapes, but many highlight the presence of fruit tones in it.
In the description of the taste of the berries, sweet flesh is noted, fleshiness is felt, which spreads. Biting on a berry. Juice from this variety contains up to 18% sugar, acidity about 7-8 g / l.
Ripening of berries is uneven. On one bunch, the berries can be either ripe black or immature white. The lower part of the brush practically does not fully mature.

On the tasting scale, fresh berries score eight points.
But, it should be noted that the Consul's taste is specific, and not everyone is delighted with him. There are lovers of this species who really like its taste and attractive appearance. Others dislike the specific flavor and wateriness of the pulp.
But in the description of the variety, it is necessary to note its difference - this is a wonderful harvest.
Professionals note that the features of care affect the taste of the bunches.
So, the pinching made on time makes it possible for the berries to ripen more quickly. Grapes are used more for private cultivation and reproduction.
This is because the bunches cannot be stored for a long time. Berries quickly deteriorate, rot, and crack. After the berry has warmed, it must be eaten or used in cooking more than before.
Consul grapes should be consumed immediately after ripening.
