With the onset of warm days, people try to travel to their summer cottages as often as possible, resting from the bustle of the city. How pleasant it is to have dinner in the summer kitchen after having fried a barbecue! However, the impression of communication with nature is inevitably spoiled by annoying insects in the form of mosquitoes and midges. Mosquito traps
They squeak unpleasantly, fly into the eyes and nose. And after such a rest, you have to handle the bites so that they do not interfere with sleep.
There are many repellents on the market today to minimize the number of bites. But what to do with the squeak made by mosquitoes on the street? And most of the repellents do not have the proper effect on midges.
For these purposes, traps for mosquitoes and midges have been invented. They can be both electrical and mechanical. And with a little imagination, you can build such a trap with your own hands, saving family money.
An effective way to control mosquitoes
Comparative characteristics of the best purchased models
Often, industrial devices for attracting insects use several factors in combination, so it is quite difficult to unambiguously determine the type of trap. There are almost no, for example, only insecticidal devices - the effect of the bait is complemented by heat and / or light.

Insecticide baits
They are an effective insect repellent. These can be containers that contain substances that lure mosquitoes, or baits with toxic substances inside, which must be diluted with water.
Such a tool is considered disposable, since after filling with dead insects, the container must be thrown away. The duration of operation of such a device is more than a month, you just need to add a little water as it dries. Such a container can hold up to twenty thousand dead mosquitoes.
Method 3. Electronic trap
Making electronic baits is a rather complicated process that requires a certain skill and at least minimal knowledge of physics. This detailed step-by-step guide will help you complete this task without any problems.
You will need:
- Paper packaging for juice or dairy products;
- Wire (thick);
- A piece of gauze;
- Knife;
- Glue;
- A small fan that runs on batteries (portable or from a car);
- A small light bulb or a mini flashlight.
Manufacturing process:
- Make a body for the future bait. To do this, cut off the top and bottom of the juice bag.
- Attach a small fan inside with thick wire. The blades should be positioned so that the air stream goes down.
- Cut a round piece from the gauze (diameter - 50-70 cm).
- Glue it to the bottom edge of the box. It should look like a bag.
- Go to the top and make two holes on the sides.
- Insert the wire into them to make a bow like a bucket.
- Attach a light bulb to this handle. The same wire is suitable for fixing.
- It remains to make a loop and fasten it to the handle. This part will allow you to hang the trap in any suitable place.
- Turn on the light bulb and fan and place the decoy by the door or window.
This device works very simply - attracted by the light bulbs, mosquitoes fly closer and immediately fall under the influence of the fan. He sucks insects into a gauze bag, in which they die.
Repellents
Today there are a lot of them, for every taste and color. For the home, it is best to use a fumigator. Just connect the box to an outlet, and put a plate soaked in a special compound or a bottle with a similar agent into it. By the way, there is another option. Take an empty fumigator bottle and pour the eucalyptus infusion into it. The effect in this case is no worse, but there will definitely be no harm. But it is better not to use spray in the walls of the house, since you will have to breathe it along with the mosquitoes. In most cases, these are insecticides. Of course, if the attack of mosquitoes occurs on a massive scale, then you cannot do without it. But if only a few individuals flew into the room, it is better to deal with them in other ways.
DIY gummy mosquito catcher
The work of glue traps is based on luring insects to the sticky material with the help of smell and heat.... Mosquitoes fly to the smell of urea, carbon dioxide. To make a sticky catcher you will need:
- prepare a mixture of several ingredients;
- apply adhesive bait to a thick paper sheet or strips with holes made;
- thread the rope and hang the catcher in the selected place.
Here are some recipes for a sticky bait mixture.
- Sweet syrup, jam or honey 50 ml, turpentine 50 ml, rosin 200 g, castor oil 100 g.
- Vaseline 100 g, rosin 100 g, honey 50 g, glycerin 20 g.
- Sweet syrup or honey 25 ml, vegetable oil 75 ml, pine resin 150 g, wax 5 g.
Important! Care is required when making a sticky trap. Mixtures are difficult to wash off hands, they can leave stains on clothes that cannot be washed off.
Stickers are short-lived: the sticky trap should be disposed of as insects stick.
What else helps with mosquitoes?
To enhance the effect of traps, use the following components:
- Bouquets of wormwood and tansy - hang them near windows and doors, change as they dry;
- Bird cherry leaves, fresh cloves, black elderberry leaves and flowers, sprigs of lavender, lemon balm and mint, fresh tomato tops, lemon catnip - scatter them around the house;
- Valerian - spray the room with it;
- Camphor oil - lubricate the head of the bed with it;
- Thyme or basil juice, as well as aniseed, wormwood, clove, cedar or eucalyptus essential oil - lubricate the exposed areas of the body with them or drop a couple of drops on a light bulb;
- Blooming pelargonium or rosemary - arrange flowerpots on the windowsills;
- Vanilla - dilute with 2 tsp. in a small dose of water and apply to the skin before going outside;
- Cologne "Carnation";
- Homemade lotion - alcohol (25 parts), cologne (5 parts) and clove oil (1 part);
- A decoction of wheatgrass roots - pour a handful of chopped roots with 1.5 liters of water, boil, cool and lubricate open areas of the body;
- Light the pharmacy chamomile, pine or spruce cones, juniper needles, black elderberry leaves, a willow twig with leaves, or lavender shoots to fumigate the room. They can also be thrown into a fire;
- Stinging nettle juice - use it to rub your skin
- Dry horse manure. A very interesting and original method of getting rid of mosquitoes, which came to us from the inhabitants of the Urals. Set fire to dry horse manure in a tin, let it heat up and extinguish. Smoke the rooms with this smoke by closing all windows and doors. After 15 minutes, everything should be well ventilated. For 3 days, even the most hungry mosquitoes will not stick there! As for the smell, eyewitnesses claim that it is not that strong and quickly disappears;
- Charcoal. If you are relaxing by the river or in the woods, apply charcoal war paint to the exposed areas of your body.

Selection Tips
What you need to focus on when choosing a mosquito trap:
- Determine the area you need to protect from insects. The range of action for different devices varies greatly.
- Keep in mind that a trap can be harmful not only to mosquitoes. If there are small children and pets in the area, discard appliances that involve the use of gas, electricity and poisons.
- Think about whether you need a stationary or mobile device. The former, as a rule, are more powerful and dimensional, they operate from the mains, the latter are compact, but also less efficient.
- A trap located outside will be regularly exposed to the sun, rain, wind, and other adverse factors. The least durable option is plastic. Give preference to models made of metal or polycarbonate.
Advantages and disadvantages of electric traps
Flying Insect Traps
The main advantage of an electric trap is its cost-effectiveness: having bought the device once, you no longer have to spend money on other mosquito repellents. Electricity consumption in them is small, although they can work around the clock: in the daytime they attract flies and wasps, and at night - mosquitoes and midges. For ease of use, the device is equipped with a removable container for dead insects, which must be cleaned periodically.
On a note!
The electronic mosquito trap is a reliable, ergonomic and completely safe device. Usually it is installed on the territory of a summer cottage or a personal plot, sticking it into the ground with a special peg anywhere, or hanging it on a tree and a gazebo, hooked on a handle or other fastener.
Such devices are designed and manufactured from high quality materials, taking into account all technological requirements, and have certificates of conformity. The casing is made of heat-resistant plastic with an aluminum coating for its durability.
Where do mosquitoes prefer to hide at home?
Despite the seeming cunning and sophistication, small domestic parasites behave in a rather primitive way, and their behavior is monotonous and predictable. Most often, they choose walls and ceilings as a place of deployment, just as in nature they usually choose tree trunks. In a living room, they can be found at the junction of the wall and ceiling. Since insects like to sit on the bottom of the grass, you can pay attention to indoor plants.
It must be borne in mind that insects remain sitting in one place until the moment when they feel vibrations in the air from an approaching potentially dangerous object. Declaring war on petty vampires, show your maximum imagination and ingenuity. The result will not be long in coming.
How to find a mosquito in a room and kill
The most effective folk household ways to kill a bloodsucker in the house:
- With the help of light;
- With a vacuum cleaner;
- Becoming bait for the parasite;
- Using a glass;
- With the help of a fly swatter;
- Homemade or purchased traps.
Mosquitoes usually attack in the dark. Even hearing them hum in the silence of the night becomes unbearable. If you do not know how to find a mosquito in a room in the dark, in order to swat the offender as soon as possible, it is better to turn on a lamp or lantern. In the spot of light that appears, you can easily see and kill him. When using light as a way to attract insects, keep in mind that LED or sodium lamps do not attract them. Such lighting can only serve as a deterrent.
For the destruction of mosquitoes in the room, a vacuum cleaner will be an indispensable tool. He will help you get to hard-to-reach places. This method is ideal for killing mosquitoes lurking in the ceiling. By sharply pointing the hose at the bloodsuckers, you will pull them into the vacuum cleaner without much effort.
If a mosquito pesters you at night, and you no longer have the strength to catch it, you can take the risk and become bait for it. Cover yourself with a blanket, exposing part of your face and placing one hand as close to your face as possible. By the characteristic buzz, you will know how close the insect is to the face. As soon as the parasite sits on your face and screams, you need to swat it as quickly as possible.
A good way to neutralize insects on the wall is a glass trap. This method will not leave traces of the killed mosquito, as it is humane and clean. A good way to quickly find a mosquito in a room is to press one cheek against the wall in order to clearly see the plane of the wall. Thus, you will quickly notice all the lurking parasites. With a glass in hand, slowly move towards the insect, not forgetting that he feels the vibrations of the air. Cover it with a glass in a sharp and quick motion, and insert paper under the edges of the glass. So you can dispose of the caught mosquito at your discretion, you can just release it on the street.
There are many known methods for quickly detecting and trapping a mosquito indoors. Almost all of them are aimed at slapping the insect, even using original methods.
Aromatherapy
The previous method is good if you have time, and there is only one bloodsucker at home. But what if a stagnant puddle has formed under the window, from where countless hordes are crawling? How to kill mosquitoes at home without using chemicals? Try using essential oils. These are eucalyptus and cedar, anise and tea tree, basil, and cloves. The easiest way is to drip into an aroma lamp, but you can also apply it to the skin.
Mosquito trap
To make a trap, you need a fan with metal elements (preferably large and powerful), as well as magnets. This design is not able to solve the global problem of the presence of bloodsuckers in the home for a long time, but it can be an excellent opportunity to reduce their population for a while. A mosquito net must be attached to one side of the fan using magnets. The front of the fan should be covered with a metal insect net. The net is attached to the fan frame. When the device is turned on, mosquitoes that enter it die for several hours.
This structure can be improved. After mixing alcohol with water in a spray bottle, it must be sprayed onto the fan mesh. Thanks to this, insects will die without even getting into the working mechanism. Despite advertisements, ultrasound-based traps or electronic designs are not effective enough for mosquitoes. Electronic traps can appear solid and effective by emitting light, sparks or sound, but they are able to fight other types of insects.
Ultrasound has no effect on small bloodsuckers at all. Mosquitoes are afraid of any smoke, so citronella candle will scare them away.Various fumigators have also proven to be effective.
Scope of traps and exterminators
As the experience of use and customer reviews show, it is advisable to install lamps and traps in such cases:
- in a cafe and restaurant, on terraces, warehouses, in the office or in the kitchen;
- on livestock farms to protect animals from midge bites;
- in dachas and personal plots to reduce the number of mosquitoes, gadflies and other flying pests of the garden and vegetable garden;
- in warehouses to combat food moths.
On a note!
Unfortunately, street traps and exterminators have absolutely no effect on cockroaches, fleas and crawling insects, even when installed on the floor. UV light does not attract them, but scares them.
Homemade duct tape
Tape trap (homemade)
This tape is very easy to make with your own hands. This trap will help to collect all the insects that appear in the apartment or on the street.
Adhesive tape preparation
To make adhesive tape, you need to use the following materials and tools:
- a piece of thick paper;
- 100 ml castor oil;
- 200 ml of rosin;
- 55 g turpentine;
- 4 tbsp. l. granulated sugar;
- 4 tbsp. l. water.
To make such an adhesive tape, you must adhere to this technology:
- Boil a syrup from water and sugar. It should be thick enough and turn yellowish-brownish.
- When the syrup has cooled down a little, add other ingredients to it - castor oil, rosin, turpentine.
- Apply the prepared mixture to thick paper.
- Place the trap near a window or doorway.
Flies on a homemade ribbon
This device will attract insects. They will flock to the smell of sweet syrup. When the tape is full of small pests, replace it.
How mosquito bait works
This trap is intended for pregnant female mosquitoes - they suck blood. Insects looking for victims for thermal radiation and exhaled carbon dioxide.
The main ingredients of the bait are yeast, warm water and sugar. In the process alcoholic fermentation, they produce enough carbon dioxide, which also attracts midges. The trap works while fermentation is in progress - from 5 to 7 days, depending on the room temperature (the cooler, the longer).
The device can be adapt for other insects - fruit flies, wasps, hornets or flies... To do this, a glass of warm water is poured into the bottle, and pieces of fruit, honey or jam are placed on top on a small "boat" made of foil so that the bait does not drown. The top of the bottle is placed on top according to the same principle, and you're done. Such the trap lasts up to 2 weeks.

Vacuum hunting
Therefore, the question is not just how to kill a mosquito on the ceiling, but how to do it without harming it. This is especially important if you have fabric stretch ceilings that will retain an ugly stain for many years. You can easily collect mosquitoes with a vacuum cleaner. If they sit at a respectful distance from each other, then there will be no problem. Take off the bottom nozzle and go "on business". When you spot an insect, move the tube up to it as quickly as possible with a quick motion. Even if he senses danger, the flow of air will not give a chance to escape. It is more difficult when several mosquitoes are sitting nearby. Then you will catch one and scare away the rest. But it doesn't matter, watch them, and as soon as they sit down, continue the hunt.
Manufacturing sequence
Before making a trap, you need to prepare. For work you will need:
- Plastic bottle. It is better to choose a container with a volume of at least 2 liters.
- Scissors or sharp knife
- Opaque paper or metal foil
- Bait Ingredients
In a prepared plastic bottle, you need to cut off the neck so that this part is one third of the total length. The resulting funnel should be turned upside down and inserted into the rest of the bottle. Both parts should be connected as tightly as possible. The mosquito trap container is ready.
To prevent insects from being confused by bright light, the bottom of the container should be wrapped in foil or opaque paper. It is the darkness and carbon dioxide that attract mosquitoes the most. The expediency of such a technique can be seen when changing the contents of the bottle, when the wrapper is removed. The bait must be changed at least once a week. In this case, the lower part of the container must be thoroughly washed.
The next step is to prepare the bait that will lead the mosquitoes into the trap. To prepare it, you will need warm water, sugar and yeast. The water temperature should not exceed 30 ° C, otherwise the yeast will not "work".
Mix 50 g of sugar with 200 ml of warm water and then add yeast. You won't need a lot. If it is dry baker's yeast, then a quarter teaspoon is sufficient.
Sugar and yeast diluted in warm water will start to "work". As a result of this work, carbon dioxide will be released, which so attracts insects. Mosquitoes will eagerly flock to the seductive smell, get inside the trap and will not be able to get back out.
The prepared bait is poured into the main container. The cut off top part is turned upside down and fits tightly into the bottom of the bottle. The trap is ready.
Plants against bloodsuckers
Some of our potting experiments are very annoying to mosquitoes, so a room decoration can serve as protection at the same time. They do not like the smell of geranium, so feel free to grow it on your windowsills. At least only the hungry will fly through the window. Lemon grass, basil and mint are your saviors too.
If you yourself do not like geraniums, then choose lilac or bird cherry, elderberry or marigold. These plants are capable of providing a wonderful scent for you and surviving flying bloodsuckers. Excellent folk remedies than to kill a mosquito will not work, but you can keep at a distance.
