With the onset of warm days, the peak of activity of annoying insects, including mosquitoes, also increases. The incessant buzzing of pests deprives you of sleep, and their bites can even cause a severe allergic reaction. Especially such damage to the skin is dangerous for people with allergies. In addition, do not forget the fact that mosquitoes carry various diseases. Therefore, it is important to be able to protect yourself from them as much as possible. To do this, you can use both chemical repellents and natural remedies, among which essential oils from mosquitoes have gained great popularity.
Dignity
Essential compositions are in great demand among the population, as they have a lot of advantages:
- First of all, these are natural oils, since they are based on plant components. According to consumer reviews, when used correctly, they do not cause negative consequences, therefore, they are practically safe. The exception is made by people with individual intolerance to certain substances. That is why it is allowed to use mosquito repellent essential oils for children.
- Affordability is another important factor that attracts the attention of many consumers. After all, the concentrated substance is enough for a fairly long period.
- A wide range of applications - using essential oils from mosquitoes and midges, as well as ticks and other harmful insects.
- Simple and convenient way of application, which does not require any extras (batteries or power source). That creates convenience for using a folk remedy for mosquitoes and midges in hiking conditions.
- Unlike chemicals, essential extracts have a pleasant aroma.
Mosquito repellent essential oils Many people wonder which essential oils repel mosquitoes. After all, pests do not react to all odors.
On a note!
Aromatic oils from herbal and woody mosquitoes are especially effective. They are made from citronella, tea tree, eucalyptus or bergamot.
Pine, cedar, or fir oils are good protection against mosquitoes. Lemon or orange oil, as well as an extract of clove, lavender or geranium, are no less effective. Mosquitoes do not like rosemary, cinnamon oil, and coconut oil.
Vegetable essential oils from mosquitoes are used separately and in combination, mixing with each other. They can also be used to prepare an ethereal solution - a spray, balm or cream that is applied directly to the skin or clothing. Below is a list of the most popular oil extracts.
How to use aromatic oils
Since essential oils are very concentrated, they cannot be applied to the body undiluted - there is a high risk of negative skin reactions. You can, of course, drip a little of the chosen scent on your clothes (2-3 drops), but this method is not effective enough against mosquitoes. If possible, it is better to make a special product or aromatize the room.
The use of essential oils is a field for experimentation. It is not necessary to use any one flavor in the recipes, you can combine them depending on the compatibility and the required additional effect. Imagine!
Aroma lamp mixes
To rid the apartment of vampire insects, it is best to use aroma lamps. They are sold in building hypermarkets, home improvement stores. Do not pour undiluted essential oil inside the lamp, as its vapors will be too concentrated and there is a high risk of overdose.
- Dissolve 3-7 drops of aromatic oil in a tablespoon of water. The amount depends on the area and the selected scent. For small rooms and strong oils with severe consequences of an overdose (see table), take 3 drops; for large rooms and delicate aromas (for example, vanilla) - 7 drops and so on.
- Pour the mixture into the bowl of the lamp.
- Light a candle or other heating element, depending on the lamp design.
If you want to use several oils, you do not need to increase the dosage: for an average room, take, for example, 2 drops of lavender, two drops of geranium and one citronella (or any others at your discretion). It may take some time to choose the most effective composition, which, moreover, will please the residents of the apartment.
The aroma lamp is a stylish part of the interior that will help to cope with mosquitoes
Aroma candles
Another way to use mosquito repellent essential oils at home is scented candles. You can buy them at the store: just choose a candle with the right scent. But most likely, the effect in this case will be small, since synthetic odorants are usually used in purchased candles. It is best to apply a few drops of the selected aroma oil near the wick, you can also anoint the candle itself from the sides. The remedy will work in the same way as an aroma lamp.
If you wish, you can make candles yourself. This method is suitable for craftswomen who like to create things with their own hands. Be careful not to burn yourself during the manufacturing process.
- For cooking you need:
- 110 grams of natural wax,
- 3 unnecessary molds made of metal (for example, for baking muffins) or glass (glasses, glasses),
- 3 wired wicks,
- any two essential oils from the list,
- wooden stirring stick,
- containers for a water bath.
- Crumble or rub the wax.
- Melt it in a water bath.
- The temperature of the wax for further work should be above 70 C. If there is no special thermometer to measure it, focus on the consistency - the wax mass should be easily mixed and poured into candle molds.
- Add 5-7 drops of the selected oils to the wax, stir.
- Pour it into prepared candle molds. You won't be able to get them out of there, so choose containers that are unnecessary in the future; but these forms can be used repeatedly for making candles.
- It is most convenient to place the waxed wick in the mold in advance; It is advisable to somehow glue it to the bottom to make it easier to pour the wax. But you can first pour the molten mass, and gently lower the wick with a weight attached to it (so as not to float) into it. In this case, to keep the wick straight, it is necessary to hold its upper end before the wax begins to harden or otherwise fix it.
One such candle should be enough for 4-6 hours of burning.
Do-it-yourself anti-mosquito bracelet
You can also make a mosquito bracelet yourself. To do this, you just need to drip a little of the selected oil onto its wooden blank or a wide ribbon that can be tied. You can turn on your imagination and make a beautiful fastening of the bracelet, additionally decorate it. Then you will get not only a repellent, but also a stylish accessory.
Apply the oil to the outside of the bracelet that is not in contact with the skin - this will reduce the risk of irritation and increase the effectiveness.
Enrichment of cosmetics
Body creams enriched with essential oils work very well against mosquitoes. A well-chosen scent will scare away insects and give a pleasant fragrance to the body.It is better to choose oils that do not irritate the skin.
There are a variety of wooden bracelets - a wide selection will help make the repellent also an original piece of jewelry.
- Take a baby cream or any other for the body, lotion is also suitable. The main thing is to choose an unflavored product.
- Place it in a suitable jar.
- Drip the selected aromatic oil (up to 10 drops per 75 ml volume).
- Stir the ingredients well with a wooden stick.
- Apply the resulting repellent cream to the exposed parts of the body.
Emulsion for spray bottle
The spray emulsion is very easy to prepare and convenient for hiking or walking, as by filling it in a small bottle, mosquito protection can be renewed right on the street. At home, this tool can also be used.
- For cooking you will need:
- 10 drops of any essential oil, for example, citronella (for lavender or vanilla, the dosage can be slightly increased);
- 10 milliliters of alcohol;
- 100 milliliters of water.
- Pour the ingredients into a container with a spray bottle.
- Shake well.
- Spray things as needed.
The emulsion should only be allowed to come into contact with the skin if non-irritating oils such as lavender or vanilla are used. In general, this type of repellent is used for applying to clothing and spraying premises.
Applying oils after a bite
Essential oils are also used to soothe the site of a mosquito bite, relieve swelling and irritation. Best of all for this purpose are:
- lavender;
- tea tree;
- mint;
- Melissa.
To relieve swelling, itching and irritation after a mosquito bite, you can simply lubricate the sore spot with tea tree oil.
You can simply apply a few drops of undiluted tea tree oil to the bite, but if the skin is tender, there is a risk of negative reactions. However, this remedy rarely causes problems, even my sensitive skin was not irritated by it.
«>There is an important point - only cosmetic oil can be applied to the body undiluted, and not 100% essential oil. The risk of skin reactions when applying esters increases many times, they are used only in a mixture with base oils or creams.
For permanent use, it is better to prepare a special product:
- Take 2 tablespoons of base oil (almond, jojoba, peach, apricot, calendula or other odorless, in extreme cases vegetable oil will go as well). You can also use a cream, but not greasy - a film should not be created at the site of the bite.
- Pour 5-10 drops of one of the above oils into it.
- Smear the bite three times a day with the composition.
You can do it easier and apply the product to a cotton or gauze swab, then apply it to the bite site and fix it with a plaster. You need to keep such a lotion for 30-60 minutes, 2 times a day, for two days.
Another recipe suitable for adults only, as it contains alcohol:
- Take the essential oil of alcohol or vodka in a 1: 1 ratio.
- Place in one container and shake.
- Several times a day, lubricate the bitten areas with this composition.
Table: approximate dosage of essential oils by age

up to 2 months | 1 for 20 ml base | 1 by 15 m |
2 months - 1 year | 1 for 10 ml base | 1 for 10-15 m |

Another group of scientists has also developed an effective mosquito repellent from essential oils, this time based on
... Gel and spray formulas have been tested in laboratory tests. 0.1 g of each product was applied to a 3x10 cm area of the volunteer's forearm and the number of bites on this area was assessed after visiting the mosquito room. The most effective against bites were 2 gels, in the first -
, in the second - by
... The protection time for both was 4-5 hours. In the field, a section of the volunteers' leg was cultivated. During the daytime, the 20% gel showed an effectiveness of 86.8%, and 10% - 95.7% after 5 hours of use. At night, the average of both funds turned out to be about 97% during the same time.
A further study of similar design also evaluated essential oils for mosquitoes from 3 species: Aedes aegypti, Anopheles minimus and Culex quinquefasciatus. As experimental samples, ginger, basil and citronella were stuck; the study took place in laboratory conditions. The oils have proven to be effective repellents.
For certain species of midges, the agents worked for more than 3 hours, which means that all ethers are suitable for protection against insects. Citronella showed the greatest activity. For her, the minimum protection time turned out to be 2 hours. Interestingly, the duration of the protective period for this sample varied slightly.

Contraindications to the use of essential oils from mosquitoes
Almost any concentrated aromatic oil can cause an allergic reaction in the human body.a, therefore, it is very important to make a test for the absence of individual intolerance to a particular substance before use. Testing the body's response to essential oil should be carried out through tests such as:
- Inhalation test - you should smell the aroma oil in its pure form. The use of this essential oil is contraindicated if at least one of the following symptoms appears:
- dizziness;
- rhinitis;
- deterioration of health.
- A skin test can only be carried out with diluted essential oil, and the ratio of the test substance to the base should be at least 1:10. The diluted oil should be applied in a small amount to the back of the ulna.... If after 10-20 minutes no reactions appear on the skin, then this oil may well be used as a repellent.
In addition, when buying any aromatic oil, one should not neglect the study of all possible contraindications to its use.
Tea tree
Excellent mosquito repellent and tea tree oil. To do this, you can use both 100% tea tree extract and a cosmetic product that also contains soybean oil. To prevent mosquitoes from attacking, it is enough to apply it in several places on the skin of the body.
The essential composition of tea tree relieves itching and painful sensation when bitten by a bloodsucker. It is necessary to treat the bite site with a concentrated extract every hour in order to relieve the inflammatory process. To enhance the antiseptic effect, you can use a combination of lavender and tea tree oils (in a 1: 3 ratio).
On a note!
Tea tree extract is ideal for treating the skin. With numerous mosquito bites, it is used to prepare a soothing bath by adding 10 drops of concentrate to the water.

Special care must be taken for allergy sufferers and asthmatics: they may experience an exacerbation of the disease from any sharp or unusual smell. If this happens, you need to stop the attack with usually taken medications. See your doctor if there is no improvement.

Sensitivity test
Essential oils are not always a good option for people who are allergic to natural substances like pollen, for example. I am allergic to many flowers and foods, and once I used neroli oil, pouring it into a special aroma pendant (not from mosquitoes, but to "improve the mood"). At first there were no symptoms, but after about an hour, the nose was stuffy and sneezing attacks began, and the eyes were also swollen.Unfortunately, the mood deteriorated further as a result. To avoid such sad misunderstandings, an individual sensitivity test should be performed before using any oil. Thus, anyone can choose the right option. For example, tea tree oil suits me - there is no allergy and the smell seems very pleasant.
In general, it is desirable for everyone to check the presence of individual sensitivity, since in rare cases, completely healthy people may experience severe allergic reactions to a new substance in contact with the body.
- Apply the selected product to the inner elbow or wrist.
- Wait. The conclusion about the absence of intolerance is made after 24 hours, if no negative symptoms followed.
- Do not use the product if the following reactions appear at the site of its application: itching, irritation, persistent redness, acne, and the like. Also, sneezing, puffy eyes, and coughing can talk about intolerance.
If you plan to use oils without applying them to the body, you can spray a little fragrant emulsion in the air, on clothes or accessories (pendant, bracelet) and also wait a while, ideally a day. An important point: the concentration of aroma oil should be lower than required by the recipe. If the body does not react negatively to a small dose of the drug, then you can already apply it to mosquitoes in a standard dosage.
Most often, sensitivity is manifested by itching and redness.
It is especially recommended to test the essential oils of clove, citronella, thyme, because they often cause irritation.
Geranium
Geranium oil is another mosquito repeller, which is used together with citronella extract in ready-made repellents. To protect against bloodsuckers, the essential extract is added to the cream from 1 drop per 30 ml of the product (depending on age), mixed with alcohol and water to prepare a spray (10 ml of extract and alcohol per 100 g of water). And you can use a simpler method of protection: you need to soak a cloth napkin with an etheric composition, putting it in a trouser pocket or placing it near a sleeping place.
Precautions before use
It should be clearly understood that essential oils are, first of all, a concentrate. Therefore, in their purest form, they should be used carefully (and some are even strongly discouraged). It is imperative to observe the dosage, mix in water or with a base.
It is best to test for an allergic reaction to avoid itching or even burns. To carry out such an allergy test, you can put one drop on your wrist and watch the further reaction. It is especially worth paying attention to children.
Allergies can manifest themselves in various ways:
- hard breath,
- redness of the eyes
- swelling of the eyelids,
- itching
- tingling.
All these factors need to be addressed.
Mint
Those who, in the fight against annoying pests, prefer folk remedies, very often use peppermint oil. This natural repellent with a pleasant fresh scent is very good at repelling mosquitoes and midges. It is used both in pure form and for the preparation of creams, sprays and aroma lamps.
Mint extract is also used to treat bites, the consequence of which is allergies. A mixture of oil extracts of bergamot (5 k), peppermint (10 k) and tea tree (10 k) relieves inflammation especially well. The composition can be applied to the damaged area several times a day.
Peppermint essential oil stimulates the secretion of the glands of the digestive organs, relieves headaches, has a calming and antispasmodic effect.
Essential oils - repellents
The effectiveness of essential oils in the fight against insects directly depends on the correctness of their choice.It is worth noting that from each individual insect in aromatherapy, you can pick up a certain potent aroma.
Thus, repellent essential oils can be classified as follows:
- From mosquitoes... The most effective aroma from these "vampires" has citronella oil... You should also pay attention to:
- lavender oil;
- clove oil;
- geranium aroma;
- Eucalyptus oil;
- basil and rosemary oils;
- thyme oil;
- vanilla oil.
- From ticks. The most effective oil is palmarose oil... Also repels ticks:
- lavender oil;
- Eucalyptus oil;
- geranium oil;
- aroma bey.
- From black flies and midges. Excellent helpers in the fight against these representatives of the class of insects is sassafras oil... Also flies and midges are afraid of odors:
- peppermint;
- lavender;
- citronella;
- cedar and eucalyptus.
- Fleas... It will help to cope with these blood-sucking insects orange oil.
- Lice: will best protect the aromas of tea tree, lavender and rosemary.
- Universal essential oils. Their use is quite convenient, since you can buy yourself one bottle of a particular oil and use it at every opportunity. However, you should not pin too high hopes on this oil, since it can help very well from one type of insect, but with another it can be either ineffective or completely useless. Universal oils include:
citronella oil; - eucalyptus and rosemary oils;
- clove scent;
- basil oil;
- geranium oil;
- tea tree oil.
If you want the most effective natural repellant against most insects, a combination of several separate fragrances is the best option.... When combining, it is important to observe the proportions: oils must be added to the container in equal amounts. Moreover, it is recommended to include lavender oil in any combination, which will not only increase the overall effectiveness of the product, but also make the resulting aroma softer and non-irritating to the human sense of smell.
What is the secret to the power of lavender oil against mosquitoes
The oil is obtained from lavender flowers by steam distillation or extraction. Not every variety is suitable for this, but only narrow-leaved lavender of certain species, which is cultivated in Europe, the USA and even in Russia, for example, in the Crimea.
The scent of lavender is very fresh, floral with light woody notes. It is pleasant to most people, but insects are extremely disliked. Everyone knows about the ability of dried lavender to repel moths, just as it acts on mosquitoes. Only when they hear its smell, like growing in a pot, dried or in the form of oil, they try to fly around the source farther. The whole secret is in the components of the essential oil, and this, for example, geraniol, linalool, camphor. These are all odorous substances found in various flower oils and they are all unpleasant for mosquitoes. Therefore, even a drop of such oil can, if not kill, but scare away a mosquito.
Reviews on the use of anti-mosquito oils
Elena is 36 years old. The husband is an avid hunter, loves to walk in the woods in his free time, to feed mosquitoes. And he constantly drags my son and me with him. And I so do not like the annoying buzzing over the ear. A friend advised me to buy a ready-to-use solution of essential oils at the pharmacy. It contained cloves, lavender, geranium and leuzea. Bottle - 5 ml. It is convenient to use, there is a spray on the neck. Therefore, I easily sprayed the product around myself. It smells good. Mosquitoes don't stick. There was no allergy. I advise!
Anna is 26 years old. My husband and I love to relax in the country. A daughter was born this year. We decided to go out of town with her for the whole vacation. There is a lake near our house, so there are a lot of mosquitoes on the street both during the day and in the evening. You can't leave your child to sleep on the street. An aromatic lamp came under my arm. We decided to try it. We read it on the Internet and found the correct dosage.Our baby is more than six months old, so two drops of lavender oil were added to the solution. The cradle was covered with gauze, and my husband and I settled down next to their sleeping daughter on the open veranda. The husband made tea. It was cozy. Mosquitoes didn't bite.
Repellents: synthetic or natural remedies
T
The term "repellents" implies a wide range of cosmetics that repel insects. Various sprays / lotions / creams have a special composition and smell, which is extremely unpleasant for mosquitoes, ticks, midges, etc. Such funds effectively save from bites and subsequent itching, protect against a number of dangerous diseases, which are carried by arthropods.
Their big drawback is the synthetic origin of the active ingredients. Such products can cause severe allergic reactions, provoke redness and flaking of sensitive baby skin.
Important! Artificial repellents can only work for a limited period of time - about 2-3 hours, then you need to repeat the application. A single use cannot protect a person for an extended period (for example, during a night's sleep).
A safer and more natural option is essential oils, they protect against mosquitoes and other annoying insects as well as popular creams. Their main advantages include:
- Natural origin. High-quality aromatic oils consist of only one ingredient - the extract of a certain plant, in
they are free of harmful preservatives and dyes. - Pleasant aroma. Most essential oils have a pleasant scent (like pine needles or traditional citrus fruits). They can perfectly complement or replace your perfume.
- Positive effect on the body. In addition to repelling mosquitoes, essential oils effectively protect against colds, lift mood and improve overall well-being.
- Long-term action. According to reviews, essential oils can successfully protect against insects for 5-8 hours.
- Availability. Due to the concentrated formula (2-3 drops of oil will be enough for one application), aromatic oils are quite economical to use.

Application methods
Applying essential oils for mosquito repellent
When used in aroma lamps, a few drops of the above formulations are added to the water. When heated, the aroma is released into the air and scares off bloodsuckers. In the absence of a lamp, a few drops of ether compounds are poured onto pieces of cotton wool and placed in different corners of the room. This folk remedy is enough to get rid of mosquitoes indoors. The mixture for spraying is poured into a spray bottle and used as directed.
