Buzzing striped insects are common human companions in the city and at their summer cottage. But one thing they just fly nearby, and another - they built a nest on the balcony or under the roof. Such close proximity causes a variety of troubles, ranging from constant hum to the threat of bites. If small children or allergy sufferers live in the house, then insects must be destroyed as soon as possible. How to get rid of a wasp nest? There are various ways to deal with stinging insects guaranteed and in a short time. To make the right choice, you should study their features and evaluate their effectiveness.
Where to look for a nest?
In Russia, paper wasps are more common than other species. They are hardworking social insects that live in families headed by one or more queens. Their color is black and yellow stripes. Paper wasps build nests in the form of open hexagonal honeycombs. They use carefully chewed bark of trees and rotten stumps as material.
Less often, home owners encounter hornets. This is one of the families of large wasps, the size of insects is 25-35 mm. Hornets differ not only in size, but also in color. The head, chest and belly stripes may be reddish brown. The body is densely covered with hairs. Insects live in colonies with one queen queen. They build large, multi-tiered nests with a containment shell. It will not be difficult to notice such a structure. Before proceeding with the destruction of hornets' nests, you need to know where to look for them. The queen chooses a quiet, protected place. When examining the territory, first of all, they look at deserted areas:
- attics of buildings;
- rarely visited outbuildings;
- roof space;
- cracks in the wall;
- canopies of balconies, verandas and loggias;
- voids and holes in the ground;
- hollows and branches of trees;
- abandoned building materials - boards, slate, cinder blocks, etc.
Attention. The wasp nest is dark or light gray in color. It can be in the form of a ball, cone or honeycomb umbrella.
If the dwelling is built behind wall cladding or in crevices, then it is difficult to find it. In this case, it is necessary to track the insects. You should put a meat bait. They feed their offspring with protein food, which means that I will carry the pieces of bait directly to the nest.
Attention. The wasp house cannot be knocked down with a stick or other object. Enraged predators will swarm and inflict many painful bites.
What is the danger?
The average nest (20-30 cm in diameter) holds two to three thousand wasps. The queen initiates the construction, and the worker wasps take over the construction. The area around the nest is always guarded, and insects do not let strangers into it.
Interestingly, when attacking, the wasp secretes an enzyme. He calls on the rest of the insects to fly to the rescue. When a person is attacked by one individual, there is the possibility of an attack by a whole swarm. And then the danger and threat to health increases significantly. Several bites can have serious consequences for a person.
What if the wasps settled on the balcony?
Peaceful neighborhood with insects that have built a nest on a balcony or loggia is out of the question. The territory is too small, so the tenants will be near the nest. Wasps won't like that. Predators will regularly sting people, seeing them as a potential threat.The choice in this situation is small: do not open the balcony door until late autumn or destroy the invaders.
The first thing to do is determine the location of the wasp nest on the balcony. It can be located:
- under the ceiling;
- on the wall;
- behind the cladding;
- from the outside.
In each case, you will have to act, taking into account the nuances of housing placement.
Traps
A universal option is to make a trap with a poisoned bait. You will need an empty tin can or a cut-off plastic bottle. Bait made from kvass, compote or beer is poured into the container. An insecticide is preliminarily diluted in the liquid. These funds have a wide spectrum of action. They affect insects in a contact and intestinal way. Substances in the form of a concentrate or powder dissolve easily in a liquid.
Advice. Choose an odorless preparation, otherwise the bait will not attract wasps.
Boric acid is one of the inexpensive and effective insecticides. The powder is odorless, being a drug, it is safe for humans. 100 ml of sweet bait will require half a teaspoon of boric acid. To prevent the wasps from drowning in the trap, but to carry poison into the nest, you will need to install ladders from sticks. The mechanism of destruction is simple: adults die by eating the poison, and the larvae and the uterus receive the toxin by contact. The only drawback of the method is that you have to wait 7-10 days for the death of insects.
Insect control chemicals
In a multi-storey building, some methods, such as burning the nest, are not available. But there are modern effective drugs that can be used without fear. The most convenient form of release is aerosol from hornets' nests. Thanks to the powerful jet, the treatment can be carried out at a distance from the insect dwelling. The drug is able to penetrate into hard-to-reach places - behind the sheathing, in the cracks or behind the skirting board. With its help, it is easy to process a nest built from the outside of the balcony.
Popular brands include:
- Aerosol Dr. Klausa - active ingredients cypermethrin, tetramethrin and piperonyl butoxide. The combination of insecticides makes the product highly toxic to flying insects. It penetrates the chitinous cover and blocks the nerve impulses of the wasps. Adults die within a few minutes from paralysis of all organs. Processing takes place with closed windows and doors. The room is ventilated after 15 minutes.
- Dichlorvos is a product proven over decades of use. The formula of the active substance has changed since Soviet times. Pyrethroid formulations are used in modern products. One can is enough to exterminate stinging insects on the balcony. Plus dichlorvos is an affordable price.
- Mosquitol aerosol from hornets' nests is a preparation specially designed for the destruction of flying insects in non-residential premises and outdoors. A powerful tool that takes a few minutes to complete a nest. The active ingredients, bioallertrin and cypermethrin, are second-generation pyrethroids. A two-component formulation specially designed to combat stinging insects - wasps and hornets. The high pressure allows the can to be sprayed from a distance of 6 m.
Spraying a self-prepared insecticide solution will be no less effective. Preparations based on microcapsules - Delta Zone, Minap 22, Get, ensure the effectiveness of the composition in any conditions. The prepared solution is poured into a container and sprayed as a spray.
Mechanical method
A nest built on a balcony ceiling can be destroyed without chemicals. You only need a bucket filled with water. At night, when the whole family gathers in the house, the nest is immersed in water. You will need a stepladder to secure the bucket against the ceiling. The structure should stand for several hours. This time is enough for the insects to drown. It's best to play it safe before removing the bucket.You can check for live wasps by hitting the dishes with a stick. If no hum and buzz are heard, all insects are dead.
Ambition and reality
Evolution is a slow, multi-vector and unpredictable process. At some stage, most likely relatively recently, man decided that he had already sufficiently evolved and now he can declare himself the king of Nature. And at the same time - to make decisions: what in Nature is useful, and what, on the contrary, is harmful. Once, near his home, an evolved man saw a wasp. After thinking a little about the prospects of living together (in the neighborhood), the person came to the firm conviction: it is necessary to remove the wasp hive.
Someone, tell the evolved person to calm down and stop waving his hands (the wasps are already getting nervous): firstly, there are no wasp hives. Secondly, since it is impatient to resettle a family of wasps, it is not at all necessary to kill them. Of course, the destruction of one wasp nest will not destroy the ecosystem. But as a result of the economic activities of the king of Nature, almost every day one species from the kingdom of fauna dies out and every week - one species from the kingdom of flora.
If everything goes on at such a pace, then ... You should not indulge in the illusion that people will eventually remain on the planet in splendid isolation. People will die out, and not the very last. To prevent this from happening, it would be nice to learn to live in harmony with Nature, that is, letting others live. Don't kill sedges!
Precautions
It is necessary to start the fight against stinging insects after taking safety measures. They provide:
- Wear a protective suit. It can be any thick fabric with long sleeves. The head is covered with a hat or a hood, the best option is to throw on a mosquito net. Gloves are put on the hands, the cuffs of the sleeves should fit snugly against the hands so that the wasps cannot get under the clothes.
- Act in the evening when insects show minimal activity.
- It is forbidden to use any perfumery products.

Stinging insects - an unpleasant neighborhood in the country
Life outside the city presupposes close proximity to nature. Wasps are traditional inhabitants of summer cottages. They are our allies in the fight against garden pests. Each predator catches and feeds offspring 20-30 small insects. Unfortunately, wasps are not only helpful but also harmful.
- Insects spoil the harvest, especially berries - raspberries, grapes.
- Aggressive predators threaten the health of children and the elderly.
- Wasps often carry intestinal infections. They feed on garbage dumps and animal corpses, and then sit down on food.
Arriving in the summer on the site, the owners may see an unpleasant surprise in the form of a structure above the entrance to the house or under the roof of an outdoor toilet. You should not take risks in such a situation, you need to quickly decide how to get rid of the wasp nest in the country. Chemicals will become an indispensable tool for fast and guaranteed destruction. You can use one of the described aerosols. This option has several advantages:
- The products are intended for indoor and outdoor use.
- They are highly toxic to flying insects.
- Can be used against nests up to 3-5 m high.
Attention. For safety reasons, it is not recommended to spray chemicals from stairs. In the event of an unexpected attack by insects, you can fall and get injured.
After the destruction of the tenants, paper honeycombs must be knocked down with any tool and burned along with the corpses of wasps. A less safe, but equally effective way is the use of an insecticide bag. You will need a large, tight plastic bag, tape, and one of the insect repellent concentrates. Any chemical agent is poured into the package:
- Executioner;
- Cucaracha;
- Karbofos;
- Sinusan;
- Geth.
Polyethylene is put on the nest, its neck is fixed with tape. Everything must fit tightly so that the inhabitants of the house do not break free. It is recommended to leave the package for a few hours. After that, as in the case of the bucket, it is worth checking the efficiency of the work. By knocking on the nest, you can be sure of the death of the wasps. At the point of attachment, the structure is knocked down and disposed of together with the package.
Attention. This method is dangerous, it requires courage and skill. Protective equipment required. People who are allergic to wasp stings should not be eliminated.
Sign for safety precautions!
Strict adherence to safety rules is the most important condition in the fight against wasps. Even if the attempt to drive out the invaders is not crowned with success the first time, at least you will remain alive and well. Indeed, repeated hornet bites can cause anaphylactic shock even in a person who does not suffer from allergies. Many cases have been recorded when victims of stinging insects simply did not have time to be taken to the hospital for first aid.
Therefore, before declaring war, review the safety rules. As they say, study and sign.
- Wear tight, long-sleeved clothing. Take care of gloves and high, closed shoes. A beekeeper's mask (mosquito net) to protect the head does not hurt either. If not, use at least a hood, wrap a scarf around the lower part of your face, and wear special, tight-fitting glasses.
- Start Operation X at nightfall. At night, the wasps return to the nest, and their activity is significantly reduced. True, they will be passive only in the first few minutes of your invasion. As soon as the insects figure out what disturbed their peace, they will go on the offensive.
- Approach the wasp nest smoothly. The wasp perceives abrupt movements as a signal to attack and leave their "home" to take revenge on a potential offender.
- Do not kill wasps that flew out of the nest, even if they strive to bite you or have already done so. When they die, they secrete an odorous substance that signals the other inhabitants of the cocoon about danger and provokes them to attack.
- If, at your approach, the wasps began to actively fly out of the nest, leave their territory. And do it as slowly as possible, without sudden movements. Repeat the attempt to attack the winged-stinging enemy after a while.
- If the nest is very high (for example, on the eaves of a two-story house), do not use a ladder or stepladder to reach it. It is better to seek help from specialists. If disturbed wasps start flying out, you may panic and do not have time to carefully descend. And this is fraught with falls and injuries.
- Develop a retreat plan before launching an attack. No one is immune to failure, and it may well be that you will be forced to flee. Consider in advance where you can hide, and make sure that there are no obstacles in your path that you can trip over.
Ways to deal with wasp colonies
The nest is not always in a conspicuous place. More often you have to search for it throughout the site. Depending on where it is found, an anti-wasp nest agent is chosen. A common option is to build a dwelling in the ground. A practical way to get rid of paper honeycombs is to burn them.About a liter of flammable liquid (gasoline or kerosene) is poured into the hole where striped predators live, then set on fire. In order not to get burned, you should make a small path of gasoline, along which the fire will reach the nests.
Burning out is one of the most effective methods, but it is not always possible to implement it. In some cases, there is a danger of burning trees or nearby buildings. An alternative to fire will be water. The dwelling of earthen wasps is poured with two buckets of boiling water. A building found in a hollow cannot be burned or flooded. Insecticides will come to the rescue again. The concentrate dissolves in water and is poured into the hollow. The entrance is tightly plugged with a cloth impregnated with the same compound.
The winged architect's structure can be located on a tree branch. In this situation, there is no better way than to smoke a hornets' nest. A bonfire with damp branches is laid out under it. It is necessary to place it so that the smoke goes to the honeycomb. Wasps do not like the smell of smoke; after a few hours, all adults will fly away. At this time, you can knock down the structure. Larvae and pupae will remain inside, which are best burned.
Miraculous soap solution
You will need: a spray bottle (or a plastic bottle if there is no spray bottle), soap, water.
- Pour warm water into a plastic bottle or spray bottle. You determine the amount of liquid yourself.
- Add liquid soap to the water and shake well to form a saturated soap solution.
- With the resulting soapy water, treat everything: the surface near the place where wasps are most often concentrated, the nest itself or the place of insect settlement. The deeper the soapy liquid gets into the wasp nest, the more effective the result will be. Wasps begin, without knowing it, to "lick" themselves and the entire surface, and ... die. If you are lucky, then this way you can get rid of all the wasps at once. One part will simply die out, unable to withstand the poison, the other, having felt the "smell of fried", will leave the territory on its own.
Prevention of the appearance of hornets' nests
To avoid combating stinging insects, you should pay attention to several recommendations:
- In the spring, inspect the balcony and other places where the wasp might settle. At this time, their house consists of several hundred and one uterus. By the end of summer, the colony grows to hundreds of aggressive individuals.
- Unnecessary things and building materials should be removed. These are potential nesting locations.
- Timely seal the cracks in the walls and the holes between the cladding.
- Do not dump food residues near the dacha, carefully close the garbage cans. Collect fruits falling on the ground in time. These measures will deny insects access to food.
A team of professionals
Fighting wasps under the roof of a house is an unequal fight. In this case it will be better organize a visit of specialists to the house... In this case, practically nothing is required from the owners - professionals undertake all dangerous work, besides, they have everything necessary for this: protective clothing and special equipment.
The cost of the service varies from 1000 to 3000 rubles. from the suburban area.
In addition, such firms give a guarantee for the work performed that insects will not appear in this place within a year.
Disinfectants will help you fight wild wasps, which are called to the house to destroy rats, moles, synanthropic insects. These companies exist in almost every locality. However, this work can be carried out by the sanitary and epidemiological station or firefighters. Having called one of these services, you should not count on a quick check-out, since this is not their direct responsibility, and therefore, they provide such services only by agreement.
