Fighting helminths

Infected pets are prescribed broad-spectrum drugs that kill all worms. Narrow-spectrum drugs are aimed at combating certain types of parasites. Modern drugs are not toxic, but it is important to adhere to the dosage and pay attention to contraindications.

Remedies for helminths are:

  • in tablets;
  • in the form of suspensions;
  • as liquids to be dripped onto the withers.

Effective treatment:

  • drontal;
  • professional;
  • milbemx;
  • stronghold;
  • pyrantel;
  • caniquantel;
  • prazicide, etc.

Self-treatment can worsen your cat's condition. The drugs must be prescribed by a specialist.

Worms multiply in the body quickly, so the treatment must be prompt.

It is very important, before starting to give a remedy for internal parasites, to rid the animal of external ones. Otherwise, the treatment will not be effective. There are medicines that get rid of both internal and external pests.

You should also make sure that the cat swallows the pill. She can refuse the "treat".

Methods of drug administration:

  • grind the tablet into crumbs and mix with your favorite pate or mousse;
  • purchase a pill - a mechanism similar to a syringe with a rubber tip that places the pill closer to the larynx, while the owner stimulates swallowing by stroking the larynx;
  • dissolve the pill in liquid and inject it into the cat's mouth with a syringe.

Convenient to use suspensions. The kit includes a syringe, with the help of which a semi-liquid substance in the required amount is injected into the mouth. To make the treatment for worms most effective, the procedure is repeated after two weeks. Severe stages of the disease require longer treatment.

You can not carry out deworming if:

  • the individual is emaciated or weakened;
  • a pet with an infection or virus;
  • the female is pregnant or feeding the offspring;
  • kittens younger than the age specified in the instructions as a limitation.

Review of products for kittens

Often, kittens also become infected with worms, and their treatment must be approached especially carefully, taking into account all the nuances associated with a young and fragile body. Especially for small pets, the safest medications have been developed that have a gentle effect on them.

Among the most popular and high-quality tools, the following options can be distinguished:

  1. "Prazicid Suspension Plus" can be used from three weeks of age for oral administration. This drug is able to get rid of worms and cure most of the diseases that they cause, and in some cases it is prescribed as a prophylactic agent. The cost of a 5 ml bottle. is about 100 rubles.
  2. "Prazitel" is in the form of tablets, which were developed specifically for the treatment of kittens and puppies. The remedy is capable of acting on virtually all types of parasitic worms, causing muscle paralysis in them. Cost of two tablets is about 40 rubles.

The cost of one package is 150-170 rubles.

After processing it for a period of 2-3 days, it is necessary to isolate it from other animals in order to eliminate the risk that they will lick the drug from the treated wool and get poisoned. Compared to domestic drugs, it has less toxicity due to the use of modern, safe active substances that undergo deep cleaning. The assortment is represented by drops for cats and dogs of various weight groups, which ensures ease of use and dosage.

Rules for the use of anthelmintic drugs

The rules for the use of drugs intended for the removal of worms depend on the selected form of the drug:

  1. The tablets and suspension are usually added to food, preferably in the morning. If the kitten refuses to take food with the medicine, then the medicine can be dripped into his mouth or put on his tongue.
  2. Drops and other means for external processing are applied to the wool, only the place between the shoulder blades is processedso that the animal cannot reach and lick the substance off itself.

The dosage and frequency of taking the funds used depends on the chosen medicine, information about this is contained in the instructions, which must be studied beforehand.

What is better collar or flea drops?

There are different opinions about what is best for a pet, a collar or drops.Some owners choose an anti-flea strap, and do not know the grief with it from the invasion of parasites. Some who have small children will not allow the child to play with a kitten wearing a collar, which is completely silly. Contact with the main active ingredient of insecticidal action cannot harm a child and an adult. The drops are absorbed by the skin and are not highly toxic. Reviews about anti-flea collars and liquids are very different, although many note their positive effect already on the first day of use according to the instructions.

How do flea drops work?

Most drugs for ectoparasites do not act instantly, but after a certain period of time. Therefore, it is necessary to ensure that the animal does not get caught in the rain or does not run in the dew for 2-3 hours after processing. The main active ingredient based on Fipronil, Piriprol, Permethrin, Fenotrin, Etofenprox - Imidacloprid enters the body of ectoparasites and blocks their organs. With some drugs, paralysis occurs instantly, and some cause the death of the parasite after a few hours.

How does a flea collar work?

The anti-flea collar contains the same harmful agents from parasitic insects as in sprays, shampoos, drops. Each has its own drugs with a different composition and amount of toxic components. From some of them fleas die (insecticidal strap), and from some they run away. When putting on a biological or ultrasonic collar on an animal, insects begin to scatter in different directions, leaving their food source. The biological straps, filled with essential oils and strong-smelling plants, are effective in repelling parasites. But such a collar does not act on eggs and pest larvae. Only after birth, an adult insect under the influence of the drug can leave the body of a pet.

Contraindications

In some cases, the use of anthelmintic drugs is not allowed, the main contraindications are the following situations:

  1. The kitten has fleas or other external parasites. First you need to remove them, and then proceed to the fight against worms.
  2. Individual intolerance to the drug or an allergic reaction. In this case, the use of the product must be stopped, washed off if external treatment was carried out, and also urgently contact the veterinarian for professional advice.
  3. Taking other antiparasitic and medicinal products, regardless of their form, as this can cause an overdose of certain substances of a similar type, and some components may be incompatible with each other.
  4. The inseparability of the kitten from the mother, as she can be poisoned by substancesthat were used for external processing.
  5. The age is too small at which the use of anthelmintics is not allowed. Each drug has individual characteristics in this regard, more detailed information can be obtained from the instructions for its use.
  6. Transferring a serious illness in the recent past, as well as finding the body or immunity of the kitten in a weakened state for any reason.

Anthelmintic therapy

Treatment for worms in cats requires that the medication is dosed based on the animal's body weight. Before the introduction of a particular drug, the following factors are taken into account:

  1. Pre-used drops for fleas and ticks for cats.
  2. The animal must be absolutely healthy at the time of therapy.
  3. Instructions for use of the drug must be carefully studied, deviation from it is unacceptable.
  4. Drops from worms for cats (or a remedy in another form of release) should be used on a weekend in order to be able to control the condition of the animal.
  5. 4 hours after taking the medicine, the pet needs to be given a sorbent, best of all - activated carbon.
  6. If your cat is constipated, give it a laxative or use petroleum jelly.
  7. Preparations developed for humans are prohibited for animals.
  8. Cats should be re-given medicine for worms no earlier than 14 days later.
  9. Anthelmintic drugs are not recommended for your pet:
      with exhaustion,
  10. in the first half of a cat's pregnancy,
  11. with hypersensitivity to the active ingredient,
  12. with pathologies of the genitourinary system and renal failure,
  13. in the acute stage of a viral disease.

Cat on the owner's lap

Prevention is carried out once every three months. More often, for prophylactic purposes, antiglust preparations should not be given in order to avoid side effects, which include:

  • indigestion (diarrhea, constipation);
  • nausea, vomiting;
  • allergic reactions (itching, burning, rash on the skin);
  • foam at the mouth;
  • decreased activity, lethargy;
  • convulsions;
  • decreased or complete loss of appetite.

If you notice these symptoms, immediately contact a specialist, he will tell you whether it is possible to give pills or whether it is better to give injections for worms.

Criteria for choosing remedies for worms

The main criteria that need to be paid attention to when choosing anthelmintics for cats are only two features of the drugs:

  1. Safety, which is determined by the absence of highly toxic and potentially hazardous substances in the composition. Also, this parameter is influenced by the popularity of the brand under which the product is produced. It is recommended to use drugs only from well-known companies that have been producing veterinary drugs for a long time and have managed to prove their reliability.
  2. The effectiveness of the tool. This can also be evidenced by the popularity of a certain brand, as well as the presence of positive or negative reviews from other people who have already used a particular drug in practice. If you are not sure of the effectiveness of the remedy, then it is preliminarily recommended to contact your veterinarian with this question, who will give advice on how well it is suitable for the cat.

Sometimes the form of release of this or that remedy also plays an important role, since some cats are characterized by a high degree of moodiness, and refuse to eat food if they feel the smell of the medicine coming from it.

In this case, it is best to choose products for external treatment. However, if the pet has no problems with taking the drug inside, then it is recommended to use the tablet form.

How to give your cat medicine

The effectiveness of treatment depends on the correct diagnosis, the choice of medication, and the ability to administer the medication to the cat.

In pill form

There are several ways to give the drug:

  • whole - trying to push it deeper, to the root of the tongue, then the cat will reflexively swallow the pill - but only if it is not too big;
  • mix the crushed tablet with water and pour into the mouth of the animal;
  • Mix the crushed tablet with food and make sure that the cat eats the suggested portion.

There are special devices for giving medicine to animals. This is a pill dispenser, or introducer, a small syringe that dispenses a pill directly to the root of the animal's tongue. It reduces the risk of being bitten by the owner of an especially obstinate kitty.

Liquid

It is easier to give a liquid medicine: just dial the required dose and, sitting the pet on your knees, insert the syringe with the suspension behind the animal's cheek (behind the canine). The drug should be administered slowly, allowing the drug to be swallowed.

The suspension is most convenient for kittens and small cats - that is, for those who do not need to give large volumes of liquid.Large individuals require up to 10 ml of suspension, and injecting them into a slowly resisting animal is a big problem. Therefore, usually large seals are given pills, and small ones - a suspension. This cannot be considered a rule, but rather a hint. After several methods of deworming, the owner decides for himself which form of medicine is more convenient for him and his pet.

The easiest way to protect yourself from infection is drops from worms and fleas, which have a complex effect. They are applied to the withers of the animal so that there is no possibility of licking. The drops do not kill existing parasites, but create a kind of barrier that scares them away. If your pet is already infected, first give him the tablet or suspension twice, and after 1-2 weeks apply drops.

Traditional methods

There are many different folk methods for removing worms in animals, among them are:

  1. Chamomile decoctions, which replace the usual drink.
  2. Onions, which are soaked in water and brought to a state of gruel, which is added to food.
  3. Preparation and ingestion of a tansy-based infusion.
  4. The use of alcoholic tinctures, to which wormwood is additionally added.

Many of these methods really allow you to save a cat from worms, but experts strongly advise against using such techniques when treating kittens, since it is not known what effect they will have on a fragile body.

In this case, the safest treatment will be the use of drugs that are designed specifically for small pets.

What worms do cats have?

The choice of a remedy for worms largely depends on what specific parasites have settled in your pet's body.

Roundworms (nematodes).

Outwardly, they are similar to earthworms; the round shape of the body is clearly visible in the section. Most nematode species live in the intestines. But there are worms that parasitize other organs.

Tape (cestodes).

The habitat of adult cestodes is most often the gastrointestinal tract, and the larvae can parasitize in various animals, for example, in the muscles of fish, lungs and liver of herbivores, in the body of murine rodents and insects. A feature of the structure of the tapeworm is the body, consisting of the head, neck and segments in which the eggs ripen. Intestinal peristalsis and the movement of feces contribute to the breakage of the last mature segments and their removal. The parasite itself is securely attached to the intestinal wall of its host with the help of chitinous hooks or suckers, and new ones appear in place of the old segments.

Flukes (trematodes).

Parasites belonging to this class live in the cavity of the gallbladder and bile ducts, intestines, but sometimes they parasitize in other organs. Their size is usually minimal and is only a few millimeters. Infection occurs through the consumption of contaminated food (raw fish, meat, etc.) and water. Treatment of trematodes requires strict supervision of a veterinarian.

Cats

When to see your veterinarian

In most cases, a person is able to independently help a cat and remove parasitic worms from it, but sometimes a veterinarian's intervention in the treatment process is required.

Similar situations arise when the following factors are present:

  1. The symptomatology of the presence of parasites is too pronounced, the manifestation of diseases caused by their presence begins.
  2. The medicines used do not help to remove the worms.
  3. Manifestation of an allergic reaction to the drugs used.
  4. Infection with worms was diagnosed in a kitten.

Why drops

Every animal is capable of becoming a victim of fleas and helminths, and it is not at all necessary for him to go out into the street. The owner himself can bring pests into the house on clothes or shoes. The chances of infection are increased when a healthy cat comes into contact with a sick relative or using grooming accessories.Even a kitten, while still in the womb, is capable of becoming infected with worms from the mother.

Therefore, experts advise, in order to prevent cats that do not leave the apartment, to use drugs for fleas and worms every 3 months. Animals that go out for walks are recommended to receive them monthly. However, not all purring creatures prefer to visit veterinary clinics, not to mention water procedures and the use of pills. Based on these considerations, drops were created on the withers from fleas and worms for cats, which, when applied to the withers, simultaneously destroy internal parasites and allow fleas to be removed.

Prevention

In order not to have to remove worms, it is recommended to pay special attention to the following preventive measures to prevent their appearance:

  1. Do not feed your cat raw meat or drink tap waterthat has not gone through the boiling procedure.
  2. Do not allow contact with other animalsif there is no certainty about their health and the absence of parasites.
  3. Remove existing fleas promptly, since parallel infection with worms often occurs.
  4. Keep cats out of the streetthat have not gone through anti-parasitic treatments to provide protection, as helminth eggs are often found in sand and earth.
  5. Provide a balanced and nutritious daily diet when feeding a pet.

Why are worms dangerous?

Many people think that if the pet is purely domestic, does not come into contact with other animals, does not visit the street, then anthelmintic for cats is an unnecessary measure. Unfortunately, this is not so. Worm larvae live in soil, plants, grass, and you may well bring parasites on your shoes or clothes.

Helminth eggs are found in raw meat, fish - often the staple foods of a cat's menu, as well as in tap water. Fleas, flies or mice caught by kittens can also become a source of infection.

Symptoms may take a long time to notice, especially in an adult cat. Meanwhile, the reproduction of parasites occurs rapidly, exerting a destructive effect on the animal's body. If cats are not given medicine for worms in time, the outcome can even be fatal.

It is also important to use an anthelmintic for cats in a timely manner because worms may well be transmitted from an animal to a person. This is true for families with children, because it is impossible to protect them from communicating with a cute fluffy pet.

Reviews of different products

Below are reviews of various drugs from people who have tried to treat cats with them, and now share their impressions and results:

  1. Victoria: “I cured my cats with the help of Mibelmax. Worms were found in kittens, but the cat had to be treated, because the risk of infection was too high. It is very good that these tablets are available for both adult animals and for young animals, while they differ in color so as not to accidentally confuse them. No side effects were observed during treatment. "
  2. Alexander: “I use only Prazitel to remove worms. The choice fell on this remedy, since it immediately prevents the appearance of other parasites and does not cause side effects. At first it was a little difficult to get the cat to take the medicine, because he refused to eat with him, but then I learned how to do it quickly: I just put the pill on the root of the tongue, after which it is quickly swallowed. "
  3. Karina: “The kitten got worms, but he flatly refused to eat food with an antiparasitic agent, and I also failed to make me swallow the pill. Dironet Spot-On has become the salvation, as it is intended for outdoor treatment.Since we have no other animals, the risk of their poisoning was excluded and the remedy was perfect for us. Such treatment did not deliver any visible discomfort to the kitten, and we removed the parasites very quickly ”.

Signs of worm infestation

What signs should alert the owner and become a reason to visit a veterinary clinic? The most obvious signs of helminthiasis include:

  • decreased appetite or lack of it. The cat refuses the usual food or eats less;
  • increased appetite with weight loss;
  • apathy and lethargy. The animal sleeps or lies most of the time, does not show activity and is not interested in what is happening, refuses to play;
  • deterioration in the condition of the coat. The coat becomes dull, disheveled and brittle;
  • conjunctivitis, skin rash and itching;
  • pallor or yellowness of the mucous membranes;
  • changes in stool (appearance of diarrhea or constipation), etc.

In a kitten, the symptoms of helminthiasis will be approximately the same as in an adult animal. It can also be observed:

  • slow weight gain in comparison with their peers;
  • an increase in the volume of the abdomen (the so-called pear-shaped belly);
  • perversion of appetite. The kitten begins to eat inedible things. This can be earth, lime, polyethylene, etc.

The clinical picture of helminthiasis can be bright or, conversely, erased. In the second case, the external signs of the presence of parasites will be practically invisible. But this will not prevent helminths from having a destructive effect on the cat's body. Parasites take microelements, essential amino acids, vitamins and nutrients from the host's intestines. The cat's body does not receive the required amount of valuable components necessary for the active functioning of the immune system. Parasites secrete substances that suppress immune activity. The animal gradually develops vitamin deficiency, the efficiency of the cardiac, respiratory, nervous and other body systems decreases.

Even in the absence of obvious signs of a parasitic infection, it is necessary to carry out preventive deworming for walking cats every 3 months and once every 6 months for pets, using a remedy for worms for cats, in order to preserve the health of the pet.

Cats

How to feed your cat a pill?

All animals dislike medical procedures. Cats are no exception, they don't like pills. But you still need to take the medicine, so we suggest using 2 options:

  1. Outsmart your kitty by hiding the pill in meat or fish. Crush a large tablet before doing this. You can prepare a suspension from a tablet by stirring it in milk, then pour it into the kitten's mouth using a syringe without a needle or spoon.
  2. If the first method does not help, you will have to use physical force. Secure the cat by wrapping it in a towel. Then, with the fingers of your left hand, press the corners of your mouth and open your jaw. With your other hand, place the tablet on the base of the tongue and cover the animal's mouth. After that, lift his head up a little and stroke his throat, causing swallowing movements.

Give the tablets to your pet in the morning, 1 hour before meals. Most anthelmintic drugs are given once. If the infection with parasites is strong, then the drug is given fractionally or the treatment is repeated after 2 weeks.

Rules for taking anthelmintic drugs

Deworming is prescribed before vaccinations and viscous, as well as as a treatment for helminthic invasions. If the animal has recently undergone an operation or illness, it is better to postpone the worming process - the veterinarian will tell you when it will be possible to carry out the procedure.

When giving medicine, be sure to follow the instructions. The dose is calculated according to the weight of the animal and its general condition. It is advisable to choose the time in the morning, before feeding, in order to avoid nausea and to evaluate the effectiveness of the chosen method during the day.

Do not yell at the cat and do not scold her - try to convince her in an affectionate and at the same time firm voice that the procedure is not scary, but obligatory. An overly aggressive or active cat can be wrapped in a towel or heavy jacket so that it does not scratch you. Household help will not hurt either.

If you have never given your cat any medication, ask a more experienced relative or friend to treat your cat. A person with rich experience is able to give a pill quickly and painlessly - so that the mustache does not even have time to understand what happened. Over time, you will acquire the necessary skill and will be able to worm the cat alone and very dexterously.

isolation kitten

It is important to observe safety measures: if there are small children in the family, it is necessary to isolate the pet from them during the treatment.

Recommendations for use

The required dosage of the tablet should be given in the morning, before meals. A tablet for kittens from worms can be crushed and mixed with food (for example, milk) or diluted with water and drawn into a syringe without a needle, and then squeeze the medicine onto the root of the tongue.

Cat pills

The kitten is put on its knees and its jaw is unclenched, a tablet dissolved in water is poured in. Then the mouth must be closed and squeezed a little, stroking the throat so that the swallowing reflex works.

If the medicine is given earlier than three weeks of age or if the dosage is exceeded, it can be fatal. You will not be able to get rid of the symptoms of an overdose on your own. Only in a hospital setting, where the pet will be given droppers, can the intoxication be removed.

Before giving medicine for worms, you need to make sure that there are no fleas. If they are found, then a procedure is carried out to remove them. Then, after making sure that the animal is not sick with anything, you can give an anthelmintic drug (4 days after removing the fleas). After these procedures, it is allowed to carry out routine vaccinations.

When buying pills for your pet, you need to consider his age and weight. On the package there is an indication - for adult cats or kittens. If you give a kitten a medicine intended for an adult, symptoms of an overdose occur.

You can not purchase anthelmintic drugs intended for humans. In order not to buy a fake, you need to buy a medicine in specialized pharmacies.

Having picked up the medicine, it is not enough just to give it to the kitten - you must follow a number of rules that will help to avoid re-infection:

  • the habitat of the kitten must be treated for fleas;
  • a domestic kitten should not be allowed outside;
  • you must not leave outdoor shoes in a place visible and accessible to the animal;
  • the tray must be washed with disinfectants and poured over with boiling water;
  • street sand cannot be used as a tray filler;
  • do not feed the kitten with raw meat or fish.

Pets require care and attention, so you need to regularly visit a veterinarian, get preventive vaccinations, observe hygiene and nutritional standards. This way you can keep the health of not only the pet, but also all family members.
