The principle of operation of the mosquito spiral, instructions for use

What is it, how it works

The spiral is a densely compressed wood flour or other filler mixed with special insecticidal preparations and fragrances. The appropriate shape allows it to smolder after setting fire for a long time, starting from the outside, gradually approaching the center. At this time, insecticide vapors are released into the air along with the smoke, and they work against mosquitoes.

Outdoor mosquito coil

Usually these substances are combined into the group of natural pyrethrins or synthetic pyrethroids. Once in the respiratory system of mosquitoes, they have a nerve effect. Destructive fumigants, as fumigants are called, work against mosquitoes and other flying or crawling insects.

Where do fleas come from in the house?

This question is asked by almost all housewives - despite the constant wet cleaning and maintaining cleanliness in the apartment, no one is immune from the appearance of these small and nasty bloodsuckers in the home. The answer to this question is clear if a four-legged creature lives in the house, often walking on the street. If there are no animals, then the infection of the apartment occurs through the basement, in which these "neighbors" always live. The basement is always dark, warm, humid and there are no constantly disturbing factors - just ideal conditions for the life of not only fleas, but also many other insects. Since fleas have incredible jumping ability, they easily “travel” on people's shoes and paws of animals all over the entrance, making sure to “visit” this or that apartment. You should get rid of such "guests" immediately, immediately after the first signs of their appearance became obvious, because fleas are carriers of quite serious diseases - various dermatitis, salmonellosis and typhoid fever.

Naturally, the appearance of insects in the house is always a big and rather unpleasant surprise for the owners. Exhausted by their appearance, residents usually simply forget that fleas, cockroaches, mosquitoes and butterflies sharing living space with them are very afraid of many substances: unpleasant odors, cold, loud sounds. All of these, when used correctly, are powerful weapons against them. You should take a closer look at the "phobias" of fleas and think about how to use these fears to deal with them.

The greatest horror for these insects is represented by substances with a pungent odor, which have a detrimental effect on the body of fleas and destabilize its nervous system. The fleas will no longer be able to leave a room treated with such a substance, they die right on the spot under the influence of an insecticide. According to this principle, means for the destruction of fleas in pets have been developed - drops or spray on the withers spread a "terrible" smell for fleas, as a result of which the parasites do not perceive the dog or cat as a "gastronomic object" or "living space" and do not jump on it. Although pets can also smell this odor, its low concentration in the formulation minimizes the risk of poisoning the pet itself.

Instructions for use

Mosquito coils are very easy to use, they are easy to transport, and you only need matches or a lighter to activate.

So that mosquitoes and other gnawing things do not overshadow your stay in nature, whether it is rest or work on the site, you must:

  1. Print the purchased spirals and carefully remove one. Usually manufacturers produce them in dual form. When separating a pair, it is important not to break it, otherwise you will then have to burn them in separate pieces, and this is inconvenient.
  2. If a stand is provided, then it is necessary to bend the stand.
  3. Install the spiral on the rack, connecting it with a special slot in the center. If not, you can use a metal wire to hang it on a branch or other ledge.
  4. Set fire to the outer protruding edge, and then carefully blow out the fire so that it smolders and exudes smoke.
  5. The leftovers are completely extinguished, they can be used next time. If the coil is completely decayed, then the ash is disposed of as household waste.

Given the simplicity of the design and the principle of operation, you need to periodically check how the spiral works: it can fade or fall under a gust of wind.

Features of mosquito coils

The tool got its name from its form. Spirals consist of:

  • bases (most often it is wood flour);
  • fragrance (not always);
  • technical additives;
  • insecticide - a substance that kills mosquitoes.

Almost all manufacturers use d-allethrin, a synthetic pesticide belonging to the pyrethroid group. When this substance is exposed to mosquitoes, flies and other insects, their nervous system is affected, which leads to paralysis, and with prolonged exposure and death. Combined with smoke, which acts as a repellant on mosquitoes, it has a good effect.

We can say that the spirals have a double effect on mosquitoes - repellent and insecticidal

Alletrin (aka d-allethrin) is commonly used with synergists - inactive substances that enhance its action. Most likely, it is precisely different synergists that explain the differences in the effectiveness of spirals from different manufacturers.

Unfortunately, d-allethrin is a rather dangerous compound. According to some scientists, it belongs to the second class of hazard in terms of inhalation toxicity - that is, when particles of a substance enter the lungs, significant harm is caused to health. However, if a small amount is swallowed or in contact with the skin, allethrin is of low toxicity. The harm of spirals when used as directed:

  • scientists have proven that a spiral burning for 8 hours emits solid particles along with the smoke as from 80-130 smoked cigarettes;
  • allethrin, accumulating in the human body, acts as a carcinogen - it can cause cancer.

The specified harm of the active substance to human health is the main disadvantage of mosquito coils. There are other disadvantages as well:

  • not only mosquitoes can get poisoned, but also beneficial insects, for example, butterflies;
  • the smell of spirals is often unpleasant.

But spirals also have many advantages:

  • easy to use;
  • convenient to take on a hike and to the country;
  • spirals are the most inexpensive of means for the street;
  • easy to find on sale.

Based on the foregoing, it is possible to recommend the use of spirals exclusively in the fresh air, where their negative effect on the respiratory system is minimal. On a picnic, summer cottage or on a hike, they will be great helpers in the fight against mosquitoes.

If you use designer coils, they will become not only a means of protection against mosquitoes, but also decorate the summer cottage

Instructions for use

Carefully read the instructions for use on the packaging, because the correct use of the product is a guarantee of safety. In general, all spirals have approximately the same order of application, but there may be some differences.

  1. Open the packaging.
  2. Usually two spirals are connected together, you should separate them.
  3. As a rule, a metal holder is included in the kit. Bend back its pointed tip.
  4. Attach the spiral to the end of the holder - for this, there must be a special slot in it.
  5. Place the product on a flat, non-flammable surface. There should be no flammable materials nearby.
  6. Light the outer end of the spiral.
  7. When it ignites, carefully blow out the fire so that a smoldering ember remains.
  8. After combustion, ash remains, which is disposed of like any other household waste.

The effect on mosquitoes begins in 10-15 minutes. If necessary, you can extinguish an incompletely burnt coil for use next time. This can be done by leaning the smoldering tip against metal or by placing it in sand (earth). As a rule, one spiral is designed for 20 m2, but there are other options, so be sure to read the directions on the package.

The supplied stand may not be enough if you need to use several spirals at once. You can hang it on a branch or other ledge. On our hikes, we also used stones in the forest, on which we simply put spirals. But this happened in the Leningrad region - here most of the summer there is high humidity and there is practically no risk of forest fires. In fire-hazardous regions, you should be careful when choosing a place for spirals, make sure that there are no dry grass and dead wood nearby.

With your imagination, you can always find a suitable spiral stand

Precautions

Remember: it is undesirable to use mosquito coils in the presence of pregnant and lactating women, children under three years of age, allergy sufferers, asthmatics and people with other diseases of the respiratory system.

Also, in order to avoid the negative consequences of using the product, observe the safety measures:

  • spirals are designed for outdoor use;
  • can be used on a veranda or in other similar, well-ventilated places;
  • place the spirals at a distance of at least a meter from the person;
  • avoid inhaling smoke;
  • extinguish the spirals after use, do not leave unattended;
  • the remains of the product must not get into the environment;
  • wash your hands with soap and water after working with the product;
  • keep out of reach of children and pets.

To increase the safety of using the coil, it is good to place it in a metal stand.
In case of deterioration of health in the process of using the spiral, it is necessary to stop using the product. If there is no improvement, see a doctor immediately. Any chemical can provoke a reaction of individual sensitivity, and spirals are no exception. You also need to urgently seek medical help when swallowing the drug. Poisoning symptoms can be as follows:

  • profuse salivation;
  • change in breathing;
  • trembling limbs;
  • violation or decrease in motor activity.

Even if there are no symptoms, if the drug enters the body, a doctor's consultation is needed. If pieces of the spiral get into the eyes or come into contact with the skin, rinse the contaminated area abundantly.

For warm-blooded animals, allethrin does not pose a great danger, but it is very toxic for cold-blooded animals, for example, fish. Never burn spirals in a room with aquariums and terrariums, do not throw the remains of the product into ponds.

Precautions

Mosquito coils maskitol

The concentration of insecticides in the smoke is not dangerous to humans, but precautions must be taken:

  1. Wash your hands thoroughly after each contact with the coil surface.
  2. Install over non-combustible surfaces: a regular plate or metal tray will do. Do not allow falling ash to come into contact with flammable substances. It is also categorically impossible to cover it.
  3. The spiral should be at least 1 meter from the person, on the windward side. Mosquito repellent works on an area of 20 sq. m.Do not neglect safety and do not light more than necessary in a small area.
  4. Recommended for outdoor use. At home, it is better to save yourself from mosquitoes by other means. As a last resort, provide through ventilation while the spiral is smoldering.
  5. Store at temperatures ranging from -10 to + 30 ° C. Limit the access of children and animals to the storage area. It is not recommended to keep the spirals together with food.

Useful Tips

In order to get the maximum effect from mosquito coils, you need to remember a few recommendations for their use.

  • For a quick result, the product is best used only in a calm area, since gusts of wind prevent insecticidal smoke from spreading.
  • Indoors, you can only use an anti-mosquito coil that has a corresponding mark on the package. It is set on fire and left for no more than 20-30 minutes, then the room is thoroughly ventilated.
  • If there are a lot of mosquitoes (for example, in a forest or near a reservoir), you can place several different spirals with different active substances - this will significantly enhance the insecticidal effect.
  • It is recommended to set the product on fire only at a distance of 1-2 m from people and pets.
  • When using a spiral in a room with an aquarium, turn off the aeration mode and close it tightly.
  • After lighting and installing the product, wash your hands thoroughly with soap and water.
  • When a headache or nausea occurs, the spiral must be immediately extinguished by watering and going out into the fresh air.

The minimum distance from a person to the spiral should be 1-2 m

When using mosquito coils, you need to remember about fire safety. The lighted product must not be covered or left unattended.

Benefit or harm - all pros and cons of using

Among the benefits of mosquito coils:

  1. Availability. The principle of operation ensures low cost for almost all brands.
  2. Compactness. Designed for many hours of operation, the spirals are easy to take with you on a hike. They will provide protection to a large number of people at once.
  3. Simplicity. It will not be difficult to cope with the installation of an effective mosquito repellent, and it works practically without human intervention.

But there are also disadvantages to mosquito spirals:

  1. Allergy sufferers are unlikely to appreciate them; pregnant and lactating women, young children under 3 years old, people with unstable immunity, it is better to stop using them.
  2. In addition to mosquitoes, spirals affect other insects as well. Among them there may be rare butterflies or graceful dragonflies.
  3. Some fumigants, even with fragrances, smoke extremely unpleasantly.

In any case, the instructions for use, precautions and common sense cannot be neglected.

Safety rules when using a burning spiral

It is impossible to protect the body as much as possible from the burning spiral, but following the precautionary rules, there is a possibility of reducing the harmfulness of poisonous smoke:

1.Use a spiral fumigator rarely and only in open areas; 2. do not set fire to the spiral in closed rooms, if such a need is unavoidable, open the vents and doors for ventilation; 3. Do not be closer than one meter near the burning spiral, then the harm from the smoke will be small; 4. When there is wind outside, the fumigator acts 50% lower.

As well as the cons, the spiral fumigator has its pros. The advantage of the spiral is its affordable purchase and ease of use. Now, at any time of the year, stores offer this product for sale, but in the season the price becomes higher. You should not buy a fumigator in winter, keeping it until summer, because an expired fumigator is ineffective and more harmful to the human body.When buying a fumigator, be sure to pay attention to the expiration date and the manufacturer, not only the result of the destruction of pests depends on this, but also the state of health and well-being.

Smoke bombs

Flea smoke bombs

Flea fumigators in the form of smoke bombs are advisable to use when an extremely strong infestation of a room by fleas. More suitable for the destruction of parasites in basements, entrances.

There are several options for checkers, differing in the set of active components. Sulfur compounds, insecticides are used.

The action of the smoke fumigators lasts about 2 hours. After thorough ventilation, the poison evaporates, finally disappears on the surface after washing with water with the addition of baking soda, laundry soap.

Important!

Fumigators are dangerous to others. Pest control should be carried out in a respirator. Leave the premises 5 minutes after the appearance of smoke. Ensure complete tightness of the room.

Application instructions:

  • install the checker on a refractory base;
  • set on fire;
  • leave the premises for 2 hours 5 minutes after the appearance of smoke.

Disadvantages - the threat of fire, an unpleasant odor that lasts a long time after processing. Advantages - rapid destruction of fleas, larvae at different stages of development. Why mosquitoes are dangerous

Many people believe that mosquitoes pose no danger to humans, except for an unpleasant, annoying buzz. This is not true. They are carriers of serious diseases.

Among other things, there have been cases of severe allergic reactions, itching, redness, asthma attacks, manifested in response to the bites of these insects. Pregnant women and children are especially susceptible to them. To prevent this from happening, you must use special sprays, fumigators, spirals.

mosquito spiral

Maybe let's try a spiral?

The spiral belongs to fumigatory means of protection, that is, those that immediately kill, and do not repel insects. To use it, no electrical wiring is required, an open fire will be enough.

Buying a similar insect repellent, many ask the question: "How to use a mosquito coil?" This is easy enough to do.

  1. First of all, you need to remove the spiral from the package.
  2. Then it needs to be installed on a special stand that comes with the kit.
  3. Next, you should carefully set fire to the plate and extinguish it so that there is a light smoke and the process of decay begins.
  4. Then you need to place the structure in a deep plate or bowl so that the ash does not scatter.
  5. After all this, be sure to wash your hands.

After a few minutes, substances that will be lethal to insects will begin to be released into the air.

Considering the mosquito spiral, the instructions for the use of which are quite simple, you need to take into account several nuances.

  1. It will not work in strong, gusty winds. The smoke will be carried away to the side, and you will not feel the proper effect.
  2. It is forbidden to use it in the rain: the wick will quickly go out.
  3. The spiral can only be used when you are in one place, such as a picnic. For an active trip to the forest, it is not applicable.

Before using the spiral, you must carefully read the instructions and the composition of the product.

The effectiveness of Feverfew

Currently, the drug is classified as "folk remedies". In the last century, when there were no professional insecticidal preparations, feverfew became a real boon. During the period of mass infestation of premises with bedbugs, it was used everywhere. However, if you compare this tool with modern drugs, you can find a lot of disadvantages. Efficiency against bedbugs is rated as extremely low.

Feverfew and bedbugs - realities:

  1. The agent in the form of a powder in the fight against bed bugs, in principle, is recognized as the most ineffective. Aerosols and sprays work much faster and better. They provide a full-fledged treatment of any surface, thereby increasing the likelihood of contact of the parasite with the poison. A tincture based on pyrethrum powder quickly loses its properties, so it makes no sense to use it in the fight against parasites.
  2. Bedbugs do not take aerosols, sprays, where the amount of insecticide is minimal, and the properties are lost within a week. They are recommended for use in case of minor contamination of the premises or when parasite nests are found. As for the toxic properties of pyrethrum, they are quite enough to destroy, expel mosquitoes, midges, even flies from the premises, but not enough to scare off bed bugs.
  3. Professional disinfestation is carried out with solutions of concentrated emulsions. The tool destroys more parasites within the first two hours, the rest die within 2 weeks. To completely clean the room, 1-2 treatments are required with a break of 10-14 days. Feverfew should be scared the room every 2 days. The procedure is annoying physically, financially impractical, ineffective.

We can say with confidence that Feverfew is a drug of the last century, now there are more effective remedies. Chemical insecticides are safe for humans and animals when used correctly. If you carry out a full-fledged pest control, leave the room closed for a day, then do a general cleaning, ventilate it well, you can forget about bed bugs once and for all.

What is Feverfew?

The name of the active substance can often be found in children's products for protection against harmful insects. Has a specific smell of chamomile, does not have an adverse effect on the body, destroys crawling, flying insects, prevents re-infection of the room.

Feverfew is used in powder form, obtained from certain types of chamomile - Caucasian, Persian, Dalmatian. The insecticidal properties of the plant were discovered long ago, in Soviet times, pyrethrum was actively used to combat bed bugs, mosquitoes, fleas, and other bloodsuckers. Now the tool is used for the manufacture of children's products from harmful insects, as well as allergy sufferers, it is positioned as an effective, safe drug for bed bugs.

Feverfew from bedbugs - natural insecticide

The properties of the powder are due to the chemical composition, which includes a natural insecticidal substance - pyrethrin. It enters the body of insects by contact, during respiration. The agent disrupts the functions of the nervous system, provokes paralysis, death. For a quick lethal outcome, the powder should contain at least 0.3% pyrethrins. Poisoning properties persist for no more than 2 days. Effectiveness is lost when exposed to sunlight.
