Barrel pump: water submersible CMI for watering from a well

In suburban areas devoid of a central water supply main, when organizing gardening and truck farming, significant difficulties arise associated with watering plants. Typically, amateur gardeners fill large containers with water from any suitable source, and then supply water to the beds using a bucket, watering can, and the most advanced - a pump for irrigation from a manual or electromechanical barrel.

It should be noted that an electric pump for watering a vegetable garden from a barrel can be submerged or surface mounted, the average cost of the most budgetary vibration pump is 1,300 rubles, which is cheaper or comparable to many manual models. Therefore, it is rational to buy and use an electric-type water pump for irrigation, choosing one of a wide range of models of domestic and foreign production in accordance with the required parameters and your financial capabilities. Read in a separate article about hand pumps for water.

Preparing for watering the area from the barrel

Factors influencing the choice

The choice of a pumping station is based on such technical characteristics as power, performance and the presence of filters. But before purchasing a certain device, other factors must be considered:

  • the distance from the barrel to the edge of the irrigated area;
  • differences in ground height;
  • time of device use;
  • area allotted for irrigated crops.

Knowing the distance over which the hose will be pulled, you can calculate the required power of the device and its pressure. When calculating productivity, it should be borne in mind that irrigation of a square meter will usually consume about 5 liters of water. When choosing a specific product, you should take into account its pressure. In many areas, devices are used, the head of which is at least 50. When choosing a device in terms of power, it is necessary to take into account that low-power units are suitable for drip irrigation, and for sprinkling, it is necessary to choose more expensive models.

When choosing, it is worth taking a closer look at the more popular models, since they are the ones of higher quality. If watering will be done infrequently, you can buy an inexpensive, low-power model.

Calculation of pressure and performance

The required height of the water column and the supply volume are two main characteristics by which any electric pump is selected; to determine these parameters, you can use online calculators from the Internet. It is not difficult to determine these values yourself, using simple formulas for calculations.

Determination of pressure

The head is indicated in the passport data in units of water column, 10 m is approximately equal to the following technical units of measurement: 1 bar, 1 atmosphere (atm.), 0.1 megapascal (MPa.)

The determined head of any electric pump for water supply consists of the following components:

1. Differences in levels between points of water intake and irrigation... When a tank with water is installed on the surface of the earth, and in some cases even higher, then this distance is not taken into account in the calculations and it can be considered equal to zero.

2. Line flow resistance... The parameter is directly related to the diameter of the delivery hose - the smaller it is, the more resistance to the flow is provided by the hose walls.Also, the material of manufacture of the hose plays an important role (in flexible and elastic water resistance to flow is higher than in rigid smooth-walled ones) and the quality of the inner surface of the walls - it is clear that in smoother ones the obstacle to the flow is of minimal importance.

For approximate calculations, the following dependence is used: in flexible hoses with a section of 1 inch (25 mm), the flow resistance is taken equal to 2 m per 10 running meters of length; if the diameter of the pressure hose is 3/4 inch (19 mm), the pressure drop on the 10 m section is taken equal to 3 m; with a cross-section of 1/2 inch (12.5 mm), the decrease is 5 m.

3. Forces of the output stream. For the correct operation of the end nodes, which provide irrigation over a certain distance with dispersion of liquid, it is necessary that a certain pressure is present at the end point of the sleeve - the higher it is, the longer the water jet can be supplied. For most sprinklers, a pressure of 1 bar is sufficient, but if desired, a pressure reserve of up to 2 bar can be made.

Based on the above reasoning, we calculate the pressure that the electric pump should provide when pumping water at a distance of 20 m with a typical 3/4 inch hose (hydro loss 3 m per 10 m length), the pressure in the spray gun is taken to be 1 atm. (10 m). The final calculation formula is as follows:

H = 6 + 10 = 16 (m)

According to the above formula, the nominal indicator is calculated, the maximum value from the passport data on average exceeds this figure by one and a half times, that is, when choosing, you should purchase an apparatus with a maximum pressure of 24 m.For barrel pumps, this is a rather high value, therefore, when buying the most productive unit with an indicator about 20 m, the outlet pressure will be slightly below 1 atmosphere.

If the head of the barrel pump is not enough to irrigate long beds, the best option is to purchase a more powerful surface centrifugal pump, for example, from the garden variety KARCHER BP 4 Garden Set, the maximum column height is 45 m at a capacity of 4 m3 / h.

The device of drainage pumps - analogs of barrel pumps

Determination of the volume of pumping

In accordance with the generally accepted standard, it takes 3 to 6 liters of water to irrigate one square meter of a vegetable garden, and irrigation should not take too much time from the gardener. For example, let's calculate what the pump should have for irrigation of a standard plot of 10 acres (100 x 100 m) with a garden of 5 acres measuring 25x20 m (the other 5 acres is occupied by a house and outbuildings). The final formula looks like this:

Q = 5 l x 500 m = 2500 l

Suppose that it is planned to spend half an hour on watering this area, as a result, we will receive the required volume of supply of the electric pump:

Qn = 2500 l / 30 min = 83 l / m or 5 m3 / h

This is the limit value not only for barrel pumps, but also for many powerful borehole pumps, the operating value will be 1.5 times lower. Therefore, if the owner of the site acquires the most powerful barrel pump, its actual pumping volume will be no more than 3.5 m3 / h and will have to come to terms with the fact that irrigation of 5 hectare beds will take one and a half times more than the estimated time (about 45 minutes) ...

Typically, the pump is selected based on the calculated nominal flow and head values, combining both points on the graph of the pressure characteristics of the selected series of electric pumps with horizontal and vertical lines until they intersect with one of the curves - it will be a specific suitable modification.

If we consider the characteristics of a pump defined above with a nominal pumping volume of 3.5 m3 / h and a pressure of 16 m and choose an apparatus from Karcher products, then the most suitable is a centrifugal electric pump for a garden of the Karcher BP 4 Garden brand, the volume-pressure characteristics curve of which is closer others to the point of intersection of the found values.

Barrel pump features

The described devices differ from other types of similar products in ease of use. They are often chosen by site owners, as they are lightweight and emit a small amount of noise during operation. Such devices operate at a depth of up to 1.2 m, so they can be installed in barrels of different sizes.

The pump is fixed on the barrel and then connected to the network. Using the pressure regulator, you can select the optimal head during irrigation. Such products have a built-in filter that does not allow solid particles to pass through. It is worth remembering that in most cases built-in filters are not able to completely filter out the water, therefore, over time, the system becomes clogged and has to be cleaned.

To avoid the problems described, it is worth installing a homemade filter. It can be created from old tulle. To do this, it is enough to lower the irrigation pump from the barrel into the cloth and only then immerse it in water. It is important to securely attach the material to the edges of the barrel. The pumps are protected by a filter so fabric will not be drawn into the device.

It is worth remembering that the filtering elements of the described devices are located in the lower part of the case, so the system can become clogged during use with fertilizer residues and rust that accumulates in the metal barrel.

There are many models of various capacities on sale, during the purchase it is worth focusing on the size of the plot. If gravy needs to be done over a large area, it is worth giving preference to two-stage mechanisms. Such devices are more expensive, but they are designed for a large amount of work.

If there are only a few flower beds on the site, it is worth purchasing low-power devices. The maximum capacity of drum pumps is about 4 thousand liters per hour.

Features of surface pumps

Surface devices allow water to be pumped out of any clean source. They can also be used when watering a plot from a barrel. The performance of the described pumps is quite high. Many people choose such pumps as they are easily repaired with their own hands.

The advantage of surface devices:

  • compactness;
  • low price;
  • the devices are easy to maintain and operate;
  • durability.

Surface barrel pumps for garden irrigation also have disadvantages, such as high noise levels during operation and sensitivity to impurities in the water.

Important! Install the described products only on a level surface. Usually such devices do not need to be secured.

Where will we get the water from?

The first step is to decide where you get your water from. From the point of view of plants, the water should be settled and warm. Cleanliness does not play a special role. The main thing is that there are no chemicals or other "poison". The best source is, of course, rainwater, which the owners collect in barrels, basins and other utensils, placing it under the gutters. If a well is dug at the dacha or a well is drilled, then water is taken from there. True, garden plants do not really like the "cold shower", which causes rotting of the roots, but you can first fill the containers with water, and after warming it up under the sun, start watering.

Another good source is a home pond, pool or body of water. In each of them, the water must be periodically renewed, so that summer residents get a double benefit: they will water the garden and clean the water structure. True, swimming pools are useful only if you do not use chemical agents for cleaning and disinfecting them. Some summer residents who are lucky enough to have a plot near a natural reservoir (rivers, lakes) carry water from there. Based on which of the above sources supplies you with water, they choose pumps for irrigating summer cottages.

Submersible pumps

These devices are usually purchased for pumping water from wells and wells, but can also be used to irrigate a site from a barrel.Such products are divided into the following types:

  1. Vibrating. Such barrel pumps are more popular because of their low cost and good performance. They consume a small amount of energy during use. But it is worth noting that in the event of a breakdown, it is quite difficult to restore the mechanism.
  2. Centrifugal devices. Such pumps are distinguished by high productivity, therefore they can be used for irrigation of a large area. The price of the described products is quite high, but they are more reliable than vibration ones.

Hammer NAP 900A

A distinctive feature of this submersible pump is its significant performance. In one hour, up to 14,500 liters of water can pass through the system of this device. As a result, with the help of this device, it is possible to irrigate vegetable gardens, orchards, or personal plots, large in size.

Expert opinion

Kulikov Vladimir Sergeevich

The Hammer NAP 900A centrifugal pump can handle dirty water without any problems. That is why buyers often use it to draw water from a variety of bodies of water, such as small lakes, stakes and rivers. In addition, with its help, take water from barrels.

The Hammer NAP 900A has a lifting height of only 8.5 meters.

The main advantages of the model are as follows:

  • Significant level of build quality
  • Very high performance
  • Possibility of carrying out the intake of dirty water
  • Reliability of the 900 W motor
  • Float for automatic level control
  • Protection system that blocks the operation of the system
  • Durability of operation
  • Attractive appearance

Experts refer to the main disadvantages of the Hammer NAP 900A model as such features as:

  • Not very high head
  • The need to take into account the height difference between the garden and the water source

Despite the shortcomings, the Hammer NAP 900A model fully corresponds to its cost in terms of its technical characteristics and operational capabilities.

Features of drainage pumps

When purchasing drainage pumps, it should be borne in mind that they are used to pump out dirty water. Watering plants is just an additional function of such products. They consist of a sealed casing in which the pumping unit is located.

The casing of the drainage pumps is made of steel or plastic. When choosing a particular model, it should be borne in mind that the larger the diameter of the suction opening, the larger the particles can be passed by the pump. Many of these products are equipped with a float switch that facilitates shutdown in the absence of water.

The advantages of drainage pumps include:

  • high reliability;
  • Ease of use;
  • the ability to pump water with large impurities;
  • low noise level during operation.

It should be noted that in the event of a breakdown, a fairly large amount of money is spent on repairs.

Features of using pumps for irrigation

During operation, several rules must be observed:

  • during operation, do not allow situations in which the barrel pump for irrigation will run idle;
  • in winter, it is necessary to drain the water from the device;
  • so that the product does not overheat, do not pump high temperature water to it if the device is cooled by liquid;
  • the product should only be used in the conditions for which it was designed.

Features of products from well-known manufacturers

The most popular are the products of the following manufacturers:

  1. Karcher.
  2. Gardena.
  3. Bison.

Karcher German devices are reliable and high quality. They greatly facilitate the process of watering the site. These pumps can be used in the morning and in the evening without worrying about the noise disturbing the people on the site.

The high pressure allows multiple trunk lines to be connected to the product. Almost all Karcher pumps are protected against idle operation. As a result, they can be used without breaking a large enough line.

Gardena products are characterized by high performance and low energy consumption. Almost all devices have float switches that facilitate shutdown in the absence of water. At the bottom of such pumps is a filter for water purification from solid particles.

Devices from the manufacturer described have a reliable sealed housing, so water ingress into the engine is excluded.

Bison products are protected against heating of the windings. Almost all pumps are made of impact-resistant plastic that can withstand heavy loads. During use of the pump, the head can be adjusted. Before starting to work with such devices, it is important to make sure that they are correctly assembled and securely fastened.

A little about automation

Pump automation for automatic irrigation systems must provide full and continuous pump power, because we also know from the instructions for the design of irrigation systems that the pump power (water flow) is equal to the flow of each of the irrigation zones. This type of automatics is triggered under the following conditions: - turns on the pump when the pressure drops below 1.5-1.7 bar - turns off the pump when water consumption stops. In an irrigation system, this is a standby mode when all valves are closed.
