Similar situations outdoors

There are many reasons why cucumbers grow poorly in the open field. Most of them are similar to those found in greenhouses. But if we say unequivocally, then one of the most common problems is the absence or low content of nitrogen in the soil. This is the most common cause that leads to crop deaths even more often than pests and diseases.

Experienced gardeners know what the problem is and what it looks like. Rather, cucumbers by their appearance make it clear that they need something. After analyzing this a little, you can understand what exactly.

In open ground, there are more dangers for this culture, but in a greenhouse where there are no pests and seemingly ideal conditions have been created, but cucumbers suffer. Wrong variety? Ruled out! Only self-pollinating varieties were purchased in stores that sell them absolutely officially.

In order not to get confused completely, it is necessary to understand in detail what is in appearance and what problem it says.

Reviews of gardeners

Alevtinka

The plant either lacks nutrition for fruit growth or light. It is necessary to feed the cucumbers and spray with preparations such as Ovary, Bud or just boric acid. I think so.

Frezi Grant

Try to dry the soil a little, reduce watering, then they will begin to set fruits faster. Sometimes it is helpful to relieve the plants of a little stress in order to speed up fruiting.

What exactly can say about the problem

The problem in growing cucumbers can arise at any stage of cultivation. Even during the period of active fruiting, the owner notices that somehow suddenly the growth of cucumbers in the greenhouse has stopped. The flowers have fallen, the ovaries have turned yellow and also fall off, and after a day or two the whole harvest begins to disappear. The picture is sad, but the situation can be remedied.

Most gardeners identify poor seed as one of the reasons why cucumbers do not grow in a greenhouse. This culture is very moody and negatively affects any change. To understand what exactly cucumbers need, you must learn to identify it by the appearance of the plant.

But in order not to control this at a later date, it is necessary to check the seeds themselves. To do this, they are dipped in a 5% salt solution. If seeds appeared that floated to the surface, it means that this is a marriage and it is useless to expect from such a result. They just need to be thrown away. Rinse the rest under running water and prepare for planting.

Why do cucumbers have a lot of ovaries, but they do not grow?

So, there were enough female flowers on the cucumber lashes, they were successfully pollinated, and they formed many tiny ovaries, which for some reason do not want to grow further:

There are several reasons for this phenomenon:

  1. Cold weather, low air and soil temperatures (especially at night).
  2. Sharp fluctuations in daily temperature and air humidity.
  3. Watering with cold water.
  4. Thickened planting.
  5. Loading by ovaries, unformed plants.
  6. Rare harvest.
  7. Lack of nutrition, poor watering and feeding.

Let's analyze each reason in more detail.

Follow the landing rules

We figured out the seeds, but there are still some tricks for planting. If you do not adhere to them, then you can again observe a sad picture that sooner or later cucumbers grow poorly in the greenhouse.

First of all, seeds cannot be simply planted in greenhouse soil. It is desirable to neutralize the seeds. To do this, it is enough to lower the seeds in a weak solution of potassium permanganate, for no more than 30 minutes.

Then rinse under tap water and place on a damp cloth or damp gauze for germination. Make sure that the rags do not dry out, otherwise the seeds will die.

After the embryos appear, the seeds can be planted. If this happens in a greenhouse, then two methods are used, germinated seeds or seedlings.

Important! Cucumbers planted with seedlings begin to bear fruit two months earlier than a plant sown with germinated seeds.

Watering

Everyone knows that no plant can thrive without water, especially cucumbers, whose taste depends on the amount of water they receive. If the cucumbers are rarely watered, then its fruits will be very bitter and tasteless, if poured, the plant will rot, since its roots cannot take root in a swampy place and will die off. If the color changes in the lower part of the stem, it will be a sign that the plant has received an excessive dose of moisture. Water should be in moderation.

The most optimal watering schedule for cucumbers will be once every two days. And the water should always be warm, with a temperature of about plus 20 degrees.

Improperly prepared soil as one of the factors

In order to harvest a great harvest of cucumbers in a greenhouse, you need to think about it well in advance. Cucumbers love soil enriched with nitrogen and nutrients. And for this, at least two weeks before disembarkation, it is necessary to introduce useful substances into the ground. Do not use chemical fertilizers for this purpose. Modern supermarkets offer an abundance of such cucumbers. It is more prudent to use organics. For example, it could be:

  • chicken droppings;
  • humus;
  • peat with sawdust.

One of the selected means is scattered over the surface of the soil and dug up in the usual way. Such enrichment must be carried out at least two weeks before planting and after harvest in order to prepare the soil for the next season.

Important! If cucumbers or other vegetable crops were previously sick in the greenhouse, the soil and the greenhouse itself should be disinfected.

If vegetables are sick in the greenhouse, then some kind of infection or fungal disease has started. It is necessary to collect all diseased plants, destroy them (it is better to burn them), and treat the greenhouse and soil with a disinfectant solution.

And the Bordeaux mixture, which includes copper sulfate and lime, can be the best remedy for this purpose. It is important to carefully follow the recommendations indicated by the manufacturer on the packaging. Such actions will help protect the future cucumber harvest.

High humidity

Soil moisture is controlled by reducing or adding irrigation. If the air humidity in the greenhouse exceeds 80%, it must be urgently lowered, and without damaging the soil moisture and without stopping watering.

This can be done in two ways.

  1. Periodic ventilation in the daytime.
  2. Mulching Is covering the ground with straw, grass cuttings or any similar material. This approach allows you to maintain the required moisture level in the soil and at the same time keep the air dry.

Dry grass or straw are considered the best mulching materials.

Can water be the cause of death

Many gardeners make a big mistake when they start watering both in the greenhouse and in the open field with tap water. It is convenient, connected to the tap and lei. Convenient for you, but for cucumbers it can be fatal. You can water cucumbers only with settled water and not settle in metal containers.

Water the plants with water enriched with useful substances several times throughout the growing season. These can be aqueous solutions prepared in advance:

  • on chicken droppings;
  • for humus;
  • by yeast;
  • on onion skins or garlic.

It is not difficult to prepare them and feeding with these components is beneficial to carry out several times:

  • before boarding;
  • immediately after disembarkation;
  • when the first two, three full-fledged leaves are formed;
  • during flowering;
  • during the fruiting period.

I would especially like to draw your attention to chicken droppings. It is the richest source of nitrogen and is essential for healthy growth and abundant fruiting in cucumbers. In addition to nitrogen, it is the richest source of useful trace elements and vitamins. With such a diet, a cucumber simply has no right to grow unhealthy.

Cucumbers stopped growing because it is cold - what to do: tips

During spring frosts, some gardeners cover cucumbers with metal arcs and modern textiles.
In cold weather, plant growth is inhibited, the roots do not absorb nutrients wellIn order for the cucumbers to grow, experienced vegetable growers advise, after watering, in the morning or in the evening, in cloudy weather, to spray the cucumber bushes completely with aqueous solutions (10-15 g of the product per 1 bucket of water) of Kemira, Kristallion, Solution ". When it's cold, it's better to feed the cucumbers through the leaves.... You can also spray the bushes with water with a growth stimulator added to it ("Epin").

Other gardeners, during a cold snap, install arcs and cover with a film, but under the film the plants are cold and damp, therefore better to cover with special material (agrotex, lutrasil), which appeared not so long ago. It is also known that plants tolerate cold better in the dark, so experienced plant owners cover the plants with tarpaulin, rags and straw during frosts.

Also, some vegetable growers recommend make "warm beds" for planting cucumbers in autumn... They are done like this:

  • Digging a groove 30 cm deep
  • We spread it with a thin layer of tops, peelings from potatoes, grass without seeds, cover it with earth
  • In the spring we plant cucumbers, they are much warmer in such a bed than in an ordinary bed.

So, now we know what to do if the cucumbers grow poorly, the leaves turn yellow, the cucumbers are not tied.

There are no ovaries on cucumbers

It seems that the seeds are of high quality and the variety is self-pollinating, but the result is deplorable. Why do not cucumber ovaries grow in the greenhouse, which preceded this? One of the reasons is an unconfirmed variety. That is, self-pollinating varieties were offered, but they turned out to be ordinary.

It is worth taking a close look at the flowers of the cucumbers. The plant for greenhouses must have female flowers. Usually, a small ovary of a young cucumber is visible under such a flower. There is no way out, you have to take on the role of a bee in order to save the harvest. This is easy to do. It is necessary to find a male flower and poke its stamens into the female flowers.

Important! For self-pollination, use one male flower for no more than 4–5 female flowers.

After such work, cucumbers will thank you with abundant fruiting. The difficulty lies in the fact that it is necessary to control the pollination process. After all, a cucumber blooms in a greenhouse for a long period.

Pollination alone is not enough. It is necessary to pick the male flowers and throw them out after processing, so it will be easy to find new male flowers. Well, the cucumber grows quickly and non-pollinated female ones can simply disappear.This way you will simply determine what has already been fertilized and what has not.

Nutrient imbalance

The imbalance of nutrients is also a significant reason for the absence of ovary on cucumbers, when one microelement predominates in the soil, and the second is not. Disturbances of this balance can be caused by an excess of nitrogen fertilizers in the soil. Because of this excess, all the strength of the plant goes into the lush growth of leaves and barren flowers.

For good fruiting of cucumbers, an even content of nutrients in the soil is required. In order to normalize the soil, fertilizing with phosphate fertilizers or infusion of wood ash is suitable. Extraction from superphosphates is also suitable for these purposes. Such an extract is being prepared at the rate of two tablespoons of the mixture for ten liters of hot water.

When nutrients are disturbed in the soil, many ovaries can form, but due to lack of strength, they can fall off. Therefore, if enough flowers have formed on the plant, they need to be fed with infusion of mullein and urea every seven days. Also, many recipes and tips can be found on the Internet.

To ensure the optimal content of organic matter in the soil, you need to put manure, humus or compost under the plants at the rate of one bucket per square meter of soil.

On sandy soils, cucumbers need magnesium, so it is good to add Kalimag to such soil.

If all negative factors are removed that prevent the plant from bearing fruit normally, but nothing helps, the cucumbers bloom, but the ovaries do not grow, as an option, you can pinch the top of the foliage. This will stop the growth of the stem in length, cause the growth of lateral pagons and, as a result, the growth of female flowers.

To increase the plant's resistance to stressful situations, it is necessary to carry out foliar feeding of cucumbers.
