Garden bench: tips, examples, drawings, DIY instructions for a home craftsman

A country bench is not only a means of relaxation, it also decorates the garden area, like other exterior items. Using several benches, you can create a real seating area, as well as achieve a competent exposure. In order to create such a bench it was easy, it is necessary to do several things, namely, to decide on the design of the future bench, the place where it will be located and the materials from which the future furniture will be made.

Check out the photos of the do-it-yourself benches, choose something of your own among them, or combine some parts with each other and you will get what you came here for.

Garden bench - choice of material

The themed product is designed to play the role of a bench seat for years. And even if it breaks once, it can always be repaired to extend its service life for years to come.

Perhaps, maintainability is precisely the main criterion for the quality of the bench. In this regard, benches and benches made of natural wood take the palm.

But is it worth it to immediately extol them in the rating if there are analogues that break less often and do not even rot?

Be that as it may, it is appropriate to first get acquainted with the thematic products and their capabilities, which depend on the composition:

Wooden benches are lightweight, easily assembled from ready-made sawn timber, suitable for repair, unstable against precipitation, insects and external influences in general.

Stone counterparts are heavy, difficult to erect, have good resistance to loads and perfectly resist precipitation, are practically unsuitable for repair.

Metal structures are of medium to heavy weight, have excellent strength, withstand weather, and are suitable for repair.

Plastic models are lightweight, resistant to external influences, relatively load-bearing, practically unsuitable for repair.

When choosing a particular seat, one must pay attention to the variety of its material. After all, thanks to the efforts of nature and technologists, capricious wooden benches and heavy metal counterparts cease to be such.

In fact, it looks like this:

  • To design a wooden bench, you can choose lumber from durable oak or moisture-resistant, but fragile pine;
  • To assemble a stone bench, you can fill a metal frame with concrete or assemble the product directly in fragments;
  • To create a metal bench, the choice is between heavy but durable forging or light pipes (moreover, the metal is different not only in shape, but also in composition - ordinary steel, stainless steel, bronze, etc.)
  • To assemble a plastic shop, you have to connect the plastic fragments to each other or pour liquid gradients into a special form.

Obviously, the technology for making a plastic bench is not available to everyone due to the lack of special equipment.

On the other hand, the enthusiast may dispose of plastic elements. Be that as it may, in addition to the above options, there are also combined benches.

Manufacturing process

The first step is to figure out the desired design of the bench. For this, the design of the furniture is schematically drawn, the parameters are calculated and the material from which it will be made is determined. Next, you need to buy the necessary material and check the availability of the required tool.

If you are not sure that you are doing everything correctly, then it will not be superfluous to ask the experts for advice on how to make a simple bench with your own hands.

Then you can get step-by-step instructions for assembling and manufacturing furniture, or you can create impromptu, that is, do everything on the go, but this requires at least minimal experience.

Garden bench - material combination

What to do if the drawings of the benches oblige you to use only one material, and whether it is not, or not enough?

In this case, you have to combine the means that are available - wood, plastic, metal. But the stone is only suitable for support under the seat. The advantages of combining are obvious:

  • Economical consumption of specific materials;
  • Giving the structure better strength, decorative effect and even light weight;
  • The ability to observe different details to improve the ergonomics of the product.

What exactly does the last point imply? He suggests combining metal fittings in wooden or plastic benches for the "layout" function.

Also, by means of metal chains, you can achieve a swinging bench.

If desired, someone complements the thematic design even with a textile or euro-slate roof. The result is obvious - a shop with shelter from precipitation.

Ideas

The bench looks original, the seat of which is attached to a volumetric stone.

Bamboo trunks can be used as the main material for making a bench. Such a product looks really impressive.

Garden bench - types of construction

A garden seat is different not only depending on its composition, but also due to individual design features. They affect the durability of the product and the level of operation:

  • Legs - the larger and thicker, the better the load resistance;
  • Backrest - provides an opportunity to lean on the support;
  • Armrests - help your hands to be at the right level.

The latter are not the most necessary detail, which cannot be said about the second. Therefore, benches with backs deserve a separate discussion regarding their manufacture:

  • First, the backrest should be tilted at an angle of 110-120 °
  • Secondly, for a thematic element, wooden canvases are best suited, which easily fill the required space so that the back lies and rests on the finished plane evenly;
  • Thirdly, if desired, the back can be trimmed with upholstery.

Also, wood does not freeze as much as other materials (although the bench is unlikely to be used in cold weather).

Family Corner

A simple solution would be to build a wooden bench in the country house around a tree. The design is not at all complicated, even a novice master will be able to cope with the flooring.

To create a cozy, warm atmosphere, it is enough to add bright pillows, decorate such a bench with flowerpots. Often this corner is complemented with a swing, a wooden gazebo.

Pergola

An alternative to the gazebo is the "pergola" made in the form of an arch. It is decorated with an abundance of greenery and fresh flowers, and a grapevine is thrown into it.

On the opposite side of such a garden bench, a small fountain can be placed at the dacha. This design will complement the appearance, form the integrity of the picture.

Garden bench - what tools you need

Ready-made thematic designs are very expensive.

But is it worth it to immediately turn towards self-production if it requires different tools and consumables, which also have a price?

The choice is solely for the target audience.For now, we need to take a closer look at the arsenal of tools necessary for the manufacture of a specific model:

  • Wooden benches - hammer, screwdriver, drill, hand or electric saw, lamellas, screws or nails;
  • Stone bench - spatulas, buckets, concrete mixer, consumable stone, cement, sand, clay;
  • Steel benches - grinder, drill, inverter, cutter, electrodes, pipes, bolts;
  • Plastic models - soldering iron, drill, stationery knife, screws.

If the mind is attacked only by a folding bench, then the emphasis is better on wooden or plastic benches.

The fact is that they weigh lightly, and therefore only contribute to the construction of portable models. You can also resort to metal.

But with it, the bet should be made on thin-walled profile or typical pipes of small diameter. Light alloy - aluminum, stainless steel - also contributes to low weight.

The conclusion suggests itself: wood is the best material for designing a folding bench. In the end, it can be easily processed and repaired. In particular, we are talking about the possibility of replacing worn-out parts with new ones.

Place to place the shop

The placement of shops primarily implies the creation of a convenient and comfortable place for a good rest in this place.

A bench, first of all, should be very comfortable, and even with its appearance and shape, it should be conducive to relaxation.

It is best to use a quiet, secluded corner in a shady garden to create a place to relax. If the area is a large garden, then more and more often you can see how benches are placed mainly at the ends of neat paths, and along them. Also, the bench "in the old fashioned way" can be placed at the entrance to the house.

Garden bench - simple folding model

To make a folding bench, it is enough to have solid sheets, a circular saw, furniture ties, a screwdriver, a jigsaw or a hand saw, a grinder, a drill or a screwdriver, screws.

As for the production cycle, it is as follows:
  • First, you need to get 4 slats 300x40x20 from a solid array, 4 slats 200x40x20 mm and several short slats (2 for tsars, 4 for sitting);
  • Next, drill holes along the edge of all the rails so that the latter, when joining the first, are at the same level relative to each other;
  • Then you need to drill holes at one level in the middle of the long rails;
  • The next stage is docking, within which each pair of short rails is attached to both sides of each pair of long rails so that the group is laid out cruciform;
  • Further, the slats of each group must be connected using furniture ties;
  • The groups are connected to each other using a small wooden plank (the plank is attached to long slats);
  • The groups are connected to each other by means of a second short strip (the strip is already attached to the short slats);
  • Each connecting strip is complemented by a second one;
  • The legs of the bench are complemented by drawers that will serve as carrying handles.

A corresponding option is also welcomed by metal benches and benches made of tubes or plates.

But to work with them, you already have to connect a powerful drill (if the walls are thick). It will also help to make holes for bolts and nuts instead of self-tapping screws.

Profitability

The optimal material for the price is wood. Therefore, from such material, you can independently make an inexpensive bench for a summer residence. It is important to use small rounded beams. Previously, the material should be cut.

The bars must be stacked one on top of the other; a long, wide wooden board acts as a seat. The material must be sanded. Such a product will delight not only you with its attractive appearance.

Bench for the garden - the use of improvised means

Instead of sawing solid sheets into boards and bars, some craftsmen use improvised products to make wooden benches:

  • Broken fence;
  • Worn out furniture;
  • Old door leaves;
  • Broken countertops, etc.

They can be used to supplement the frame at one time in order to receive seats or backs. Corresponding techniques take place in some photos of garden benches and benches.

Certain elements will most likely be made of laminated chipboard or MDF. But is it so important when outdoor recreation is at stake, and any material can be processed or upholstered with fabric?

Set

A fairly thick board acts as a seat, the legs are made from most of the log. Initially, the place intended for the seat is cut out in the deck.

The ideal option is a "wooden set", when a table and a bench are made of wood at the same time. You will need a working material: logs (for the lower part of the product, legs), sanded boards (for the upper part).

Simplicity and convenience

The preparatory stage is present in all processes. The bench making procedure is no exception. First you need to prepare drawings of a bench for a summer residence with an indication of the optimal dimensions. The product without a back is 120 cm long, 38 cm high and 45 cm wide.

In order to smooth the edges of the timber, use cutters. This simplifies the work process, despite the high cost.

The length depends on the section of the bar you choose, then the height of the leg is calculated.
