Why do you need to dig cannes for the winter?

As with most tropical plants, sub-zero temperatures are fatal for cannes.
Therefore, in order to preserve these beautiful plants, they should be dug up every autumn. before the onset of cold weather and re-plant in the ground in the spring, as soon as the weather is warm.

Cannes is recommended to be excavated annually

In the southern regions, where the soil temperature in winter remains within 0 to -5 degrees , the plants can be left to winter in the ground. At the same time, they are sheltered for the winter, for which it follows:

  • trim stalks and leaves to the base;
  • lay spruce branches, or pour a layer of needles;
  • drive in pegs along the edges of the protective area and lay mats on top of them;
  • fix them securely.

If the soil temperature in winter drops below -6 degrees, the cannes must be dug up in the fall before the onset of frost and stored until spring. A signal to start work can be first night frosts in autumn however, especially valuable varieties can be dug up in mid-September without relying on the vicissitudes of the weather.

For the northern regions, it is recommended to dig up flowers from open flower beds in the last days of August - early September. It is not advisable to skip the dates in order to prevent the roots from freezing and rotting during storage.

The timing of digging should not be skipped in order to prevent the roots from freezing.

In which regions are they dug

Cannes can stand the autumn cold snap, and a slight drop in temperature is not dangerous for them. If a lot of corms are left in the ground for the winter, then in the spring it will most likely be found that single specimens survived the frosts. But it's not worth the risk, especially since the frost resistance of the overwhelming majority of varieties is approaching zero.

In the southern regions, where the lowest temperatures in winter do not fall below 0-5 ° C, these flowers are not dug up, since they winter well in the ground. The only preparation for winter is laying a layer of needles or spruce branches over the beds, and agrofibre, lutrasil or spunbond is laid on top for confidence.

In regions where frosts exceed -5 ° C, digging becomes a mandatory procedure, without which the culture will die.

Features of cannes garden

Culture has a unique appearance and can be a decoration for any garden plot. Cannes has the following features:

  • The roots of the culture are large. They grow not only in depth, but also in width, therefore, when planting, this criterion must be taken into account.
  • The stems are tall and can grow up to 3 meters.
  • The stems are firm and fleshy.
  • The leaves are in the shape of an oblong oval.
  • The stems and leaves are highly nutritious and can be used as feed raw materials.
  • The inflorescence is large, bisexual, can be red, orange, pink and white.

Flowers can be bicolored, which is popular with modern gardeners. When planting a plant, it must be borne in mind that cannes prefer open areas and a large amount of space.

Properly picking up flowers and preparing for storage

You can store cannes in winter in three different ways :

  • in the form of dried roots in boxes;
  • at rest in a flower pot;
  • in the form of a houseplant.

Different storage methods imply different preparation, however, digging out flowers follows the same scheme - in warm, dry weather, cannes are carefully dug up with a shovel so as not to damage the roots.

At the same time, the earth not completely removed from a dug bush, and the peduncle and damaged leaves, if necessary, are cut off with a sharp knife.

How to store cannes bulbs?

  1. To begin with, the plant itself should be prepared for storage. Cannes are dug at the end of October, in dry weather. Tall bushes are dug in from all sides, gently shaken. All the earth must be shaken off, otherwise, during storage, the rhizomes (bulbs) may dry out.
  2. Cut the leaves and stems at a height of 20-22 cm.
  3. If you forget what varieties of flowers you are planting in your area, attach a label with the name to one of the bulbs.
  4. Arrange the plants in one row in boxes and store them in storage. There, in about 1-2 weeks, the stems will slightly tighten.

Storage methods in the apartment

For those who live in their own apartment and do not have the opportunity to keep the bulbs in the cellar, alternative options are suitable. For example, you can simulate a mild tropical winter in a heated loggia or balcony. In this case, the canna is cut to the root and planted in a pot together with a lump of earth. The tuber is watered 1-2 times a month and kept in a bright place at a temperature of + 12 ... + 15 ° C. In the spring, watering is made more intense, and 2 weeks before planting in the ground, the canna is fertilized.

Advice. This method is also practiced on warm verandas of private houses.

If you plant a still blooming canna in a pot, you can admire its inflorescences until the winter holidays. Dig a bush in the fall and transplant it into a spacious container. Place the flowerpot in a bright and cool place. Continue watering, and feed the canna with a mineral mixture once a month.

When the plant is dormant, trim dry foliage and cut back on water. The bulb will remain until the new season.

Attention! If you are going to keep a blooming specimen at home, have time to remove it from the ground before the first frost.

The least preferred way to store your culture is in the refrigerator. But if there is nothing else, it will do too. After digging, the cannabis tubers are thoroughly washed, and then they are kept in a solution of potassium permanganate or a special disinfectant for a day. The carefully dried roots are wrapped in newsprint and placed in plastic containers with holes for ventilation, or simply put in the refrigerator. Cannes storage place is vegetable shelves.

In mid-spring, you need to remove the bulbs from storage (if these are not individual pots), inspect them, divide them into separate specimens according to the number of shoots and plant them. In the summer, the cannes will bloom to the delight of their owner, who carefully kept the bulbs all winter.

How to dig up plants correctly?

Before digging out the rhizomes from the plant, you need to cut off all the peduncles, leaving a stump about 20 cm long. Then the perennial is carefully dug in and removed from the ground. There is no need to remove the soil from the roots, wash them - the remnants of the soil will help not to lose the necessary moisture in winter. Before storing flowers, they need to be dried in the shade for several days. This is best done under a shed or shed.

Advice

If you have several varieties of this ornamental plant, attach a tag with the name of the variety to the remainder of the peduncle. It can be made from thick foil, cardboard, plastic. In the spring, it will be easier to create a flower arrangement, taking into account the characteristics of the variety.

It is imperative to inspect the dug tubers, removing spoiled, rotten roots with buds. This is a convenient opportunity to divide the plant, leaving 1-2 healthy buds on each tuber. The cut points must be dried and sprinkled with crushed coal for disinfection.Experienced growers advise to postpone the division of the perennial until spring, when it will be clear how the plant has wintered.

Cannes in autumn - preparing for digging

Cannes must be kept in a frost-free place in winter. The preparation of flowers for storage begins at the end of summer. In mid-August, watering is reduced; for two weeks before digging cannes, they are not carried out at all. The canna rhizome should be dug immediately before the first frosts. The rhizome is carefully dug up and taken out together with a clod of earth. An inspection is carried out, during which damaged and diseased tubers are removed. Only healthy cannes tubers with growth buds are left for storage.

Canna is a thermophilic plant, so it is unable to withstand the low temperatures for which winter in central Russia is famous. In order not to purchase seedlings annually, you need to take care of preserving your planting material.

The rhizomes of the plant are used for reproduction and cultivation of canna. With the onset of autumn, they are dug out of the soil and stored under certain conditions until next spring.

Even before starting work on digging a canna, you should decide: how exactly and where the roots of the flower will be stored. The following methods of storing planting material are most common:

  • in a specially equipped basement or cellar, where the ambient temperature meets the requirements;
  • in a refrigerator with a section for storing vegetables;
  • in a flower pot, like a houseplant.

Autumn care for cannes, first of all, is aimed at preparing plants for the winter period, so that they can meet the new spring healthy and strong.

In southern climates, in order to preserve the plant, it will be enough to cut the flower in the fall and cover it from the cold with coniferous branches or straw. In central Russia, gardeners will have to work harder so that the cannes can bloom next summer. It is recommended to dig out the rhizomes before the onset of stable frosts, that is, in late September - early October. You should prepare a container for storing canna roots in advance - this can be plastic or wooden boxes with holes for ventilation or roomy flower pots.

Recommendations for preparing cannes for storage:

  1. Reduce watering frequency starting in late August. By the time the roots are harvested, watering should be stopped completely.
  2. All work should be done on a sunny day without precipitation. Cut the leaves and peduncles 15 cm from the base of the plant.
  3. Remove the plants from the soil, along with the earthy clod, and inspect the roots for damage and disease.

Only healthy planting material should be left for storage. Competent preparation of Cannes for winter storage is a guarantee that next summer your site, with its beauty, will again delight friends and family.

To give the correct answer to the question of how to store cannes in winter, you need to know the biological characteristics and rules for caring for them.

The homeland of Cannes is Central and South America. From Greek, the word "canna" is translated as "reed".Growers appreciate these flowers for their large ornamental leaves that can be green, bronze or purple in color.

The root system of the canna is superficial and mainly expands in breadth. Since these flowers are native to the tropics, they cannot withstand frost and therefore have to be dug up annually. Canna is suitable even for novice growers, it does not require any special care.

Interesting! When the air temperature drops, the rhizomes of the cannes begin to accumulate starch, so the plant prepares for a dormant period.

Content in the apartment

Not all growers have a spacious cellar to put their favorite cannes there. In this case, storage of tubers in winter can be carried out directly in the apartment. To do this, use one of the following methods:

  1. Potted storage.
  2. Cold storage.
  3. Storage as a houseplant.

If the first option is considered, then it has several differences from storage in the cellar. As soon as the first night frosts begin, the flower must be cleaned of dead leaves and dried peduncles, and then placed in a pot with earth. This method is suitable for keeping culture in the attic, closed loggia and even in the apartment. In the latter case, you need to find a cool space, preferably at the balcony door, remote from the heating radiators. Watering the plant is carried out every 1-1.5 months.

Advice!

Closer to spring, the intensity of such procedures can be increased so that the flower has time to "wake up" from winter sleep. And half a month before moving the flowers into open soil, they need to be fed with special fertilizer.

When storing cannes in the refrigerator, you can follow a simple principle of preparation. To do this, you need to cut the flowers and stems by 5-10 centimeters, and then process the cuts with iodine. After digging up the root system and rinsing them with running water, they need to be dipped for a day in a solution of potassium permanganate or a special disinfectant that can be bought at a flower shop.

After 24 hours, the flowers can be removed from the container with the solution, and then dried. After that, they need to be wrapped in damp newspaper and closed in a plastic container, which should eventually end up in the refrigerator. Several ventilation holes must be made in the containers.

Once a month, you need to open the container and check the root system of the cannes for rot or drying out. This method is suitable for owners of several refrigerators or a small number of flowers, since their storage requires a lot of space. At the beginning of April, the tubers are taken out of the chambers and prepared for the upcoming planting.

Flower pot

If you want to store flowers as a houseplant, you need to prepare pots of a suitable size for this. This method allows you to keep cannes both at rest and in active growth. The first option involves moving culture to a glazed balcony, veranda or loggia. The main thing is that this room has a stable temperature regime within the range of +12 - +15 degrees Celsius. Watering the plant is carried out no more than once every two weeks. Excessive soil moisture should not be allowed, because this can lead to the development of putrefactive processes.

If you want to enjoy the flowering of canna even in winter, the flower should be placed in a spacious pot, and during pruning, get rid of only dry and dead parts of the culture. At the bottom of the container used, you need to place fertile garden soil in which the plant was grown in summer. You can also prepare a suitable mixture of sawdust, peat and sand, combined in equal proportions.

Culture needs abundant sunshine therefore it is better to place it on the south or east window. In this case, the flowering period will last until mid-December. With this method of storage, the flower needs to be watered once a month, and also fertilized with appropriate dressings.

Cannes storage

In the basement or cellar

For storage in boxes, the leaves should be cut to a height of 20 cmand then dry under a canopy with fresh air.

After that, the wooden boxes are filled with peat mixed in equal proportions with sand and sawdust, the mixture is moistened and the dried rhizomes are placed there. Store in a cellar or basement at a humidity of no more than 60% and temperature from +5 to +8 degrees.

Watering and inspection should be carried out at least 1 time per month.

At rest

Storage in a pot does not require cutting the stem, and the plant, along with the dug earth ball, is placed in a flower pot of suitable size.

You can store the flower on the veranda, loggia, closed balcony at a temperature not lower than +12 and not higher than +15 degrees... Canna should be watered once every two weeks. Care should be taken to ensure that the soil is not too moist, as this can lead to root rot.

Preparing broccoli for storage

When you decide where you will store your broccoli, be sure to prepare the forks.

Attention

When freezing, the forks are washed and must be dried. If it will be stored at positive temperatures, then it should not be washed in any case.

When harvesting, care must be taken to ensure that the forks do not get dirty in the ground or sand. If this does happen, clean them from dirt with a soft brush. You cannot press or rub. Damage to the cabbage leads to rapid spoilage and shortened shelf life.

Basement broccoli storage method

For basement storage, three things must be observed:

  • temperature from 0 ° to 3 °;
  • high humidity;
  • good ventilation.

Plastic crates with holes are best for storing broccoli. Cover the bottom with a damp cloth. Place the cabbage heads on the fabric with a leg. Try to keep the forks in contact with each other as little as possible.

To preserve moisture, stretch a piece of plastic wrap over the box. Cellophane should not touch the cabbage, there should be a small gap between them. There is no need to close the openings in the sides of the boxes. This will help prevent decay.

Humidity should be checked periodically. If necessary, spray the bottom of the box with water from a spray bottle. Water should not get on the heads of cabbage!

When to dig cannes for the winter

The answer to this question depends on the region in which you live. If this is the north, and the first frosts may begin as early as September, then it is better to remove the rhizomes at the end of August. If the heat lasts until November, then you can postpone this procedure until mid-October. In any case, even short-term negative temperatures can ruin a capricious flower, so it is better not to delay.

Pay close attention to the weather forecast and dig up cannes at the first sign of a cold snap.

Timing

The main question that worries gardeners when growing cannes is when to dig out in order to preserve the corms until spring. There are often tips to hold this event at the end of September, but you need to focus not on the calendar, but on the weather data of the current year.

The fact is that digging up tubers before a steady cooling is observed is not rational: after a cold snap, the plant directs all the necessary nutrients into the underground bulbs, which makes it stronger and prepares it for the lush flowering of the next season.If the roots are dug out before this natural preparation is complete, storage and growing season of the next year will be less successful. But it is also not worth delaying too much with digging, so that the frost does not put the tubers into stress.

How to store canna in a regular refrigerator

This method is suitable for those who have a roomy refrigeration unit and not many flower tubers.

This method differs from the basement storage method by the need to have no land on the tubers (you won't keep a couple of kilograms of black soil next to the products!) The method involves several stages:

  1. prepare the rhizomes: dig them out, clean them of soil, rinse under running water, check the roots for rot;
  2. soak the washed roots in a disinfectant solution, then let them dry in warmth for a day;
  3. wrap the roots in several layers of newsprint and send them to the refrigerator in the fruit and vegetable section.

Basement preparation

Before laying tubers for wintering in a basement or cellar, you need to make sure that the conditions in the room are suitable for this. To keep cannes flowers throughout the winter, you must adhere to the rules:

  1. The storage of tubers is carried out at a temperature not less than 0 ° C and not more than + 7 ° C. If the temperature regime exceeds this mark, then the cannes may wake up ahead of time.
  2. Indoor humidity ranges from 85 to 90%. In case of deviation from these indicators, the tubers of the plant may dry out or rot.
  3. The basement is well ventilated. There is no mold.

During the wintering process, canna flowers must be inspected to make sure that there are no diseased plants. The specified parameters can be created in the apartment, for example, on a closed loggia or a balcony, which is located on the south side.
