Do-it-yourself garden beds: step-by-step instructions on how to break a vegetable garden from scrap materials

Advantages of high beds

Revealing the secret of the popularity of these garden fences is easy. They allow you to:

  • rational use of the land (you can grow plants in low areas of soil flooded with rainwater);
  • it is convenient to prepare the bed for planting (it is loosened, doing without digging);
  • clear fencing makes it easy to deal with weeds;
  • country beds can be quickly assembled and disassembled;
  • plants tolerate frost better, they are easy to cover from bad weather;
  • fruits ripen in a short time, since the soil is warmer;
  • the shoes are kept clean and not contaminated.

Vertical bed of flower pots

Using ceramic or plastic pots of different sizes, you can make a very simple but very beautiful garden bed. Everything is simple here: the structure is installed according to the pyramid principle.

Fill a pot of the largest diameter with soil, place a pot of a smaller diameter on top. So we install all the pots sequentially. Several tiers can be made based on the number of pots.

From pots of the same diameter, you can make an original garden bed using a metal rod with a diameter slightly smaller than the hole in the bottom of the pot. Put the first pot on the ground and hammer part of the rod into the ground through the hole for stability.

Fill the pot with earth, and then string each pot on a rod and move them in different directions. The bed is ready, it remains only to shed it and plant the plants.

A variety of materials for arranging beds

Novice gardeners are wondering how to make high beds? Various materials are used for the manufacture of the fencing frame:

Experienced land owners recommend using rectangular wooden fences. They can be painted to create a unique space design. To fill the beds, use ready-made nutritious soil, apply fertilizers.

Slate beds are an economical option, simple to perform. A durable material, but very fragile.

Concrete is suitable for arranging beds on a slope. Strong, durable and neat designs are obtained from it. However, the gardener will have to take care of the additional arrangement of the drainage system.

Metal is a durable material, but requires special skills to work with it yourself. It is easy to dismantle metal beds if necessary. You can create long-lasting figured structures, but they must be protected from corrosion.

Polymeric plastic materials are used to create garden fences. Such beds are durable. They serve for a long time. A safe, certified plastic material should be chosen.

Brickwork is used to create architectural fences. Such a bed will last a long time, but it is difficult to move it to another place.

Bordered beds in the South, why are they needed?

Once, in a conversation about trimmed beds, I was told: why are they needed? After all, we have the South, heat, high beds do not make sense. Having talked about this topic, I wanted to decorate my beds even more, since I see a lot of advantages in this.

The first advantage was noticed by the children, running happily along the paths, with the confidence that they would not step on the garden bed. The second and most important advantage: it is more convenient with curbs, the earth does not crumble, mulch too; landing became more convenient. Of course, in our region it makes no sense to make high beds because of the intense heat, but small curbs can bring a lot of benefits, and most importantly, make work easier. Having filled the boxes to the brim with organic matter, spilled EM and covered with a black film, you can prepare compost over the winter, but not somewhere, but already in the garden. Autumn and Winter, we often have warm ones, and therefore I don't really want to say goodbye to garden troubles. Now we have October 24, during the day the temperature is still above zero, but at night it can already be up to -5. Therefore, we can grow something, but only in a greenhouse or a warm greenhouse. Since my site is only 2 years old, I do not have a greenhouse yet, but I still want to grow my own greens and radishes. It was then that new curbs came to my aid.

After the repair, I still have a lot of old frames, so I covered the crops in my beds with them.

So I got wonderful greenhouses in which I grow greens and radishes. At night and on cold days, I cover the frames with foil so that the frost does not penetrate the cracks between the frames. One greenhouse, which I made at the end of September, is already feeding us green onions and garlic, and we are already starting to pinch cilantro.

Radish also began to pour, our greenhouse is working and pleases us with its harvests. Therefore, I laid a new greenhouse, but this one I covered with foliage with "Shining-3", and from the top with earth, so that when it gets colder, it would be warm in the greenhouse. So, thanks to the borders on the garden bed, I was able to continue my garden season and pamper my family with delicious and aromatic herbs. Now, with the help of borders and old window frames, I can provide my family with fresh onions, garlic and parsley for the whole winter, as they are not afraid of the cold ...

And here's another advantage: my cats are very fond of digging the beds after sowing and this spoil the rows for me. And one day the chickens escaped from the corral. And in these two situations, the boxes are just a find, I just covered them with an iron and plastic net and the whole problem was solved, and the chickens are happy and the beds are intact, only the cats have lost their pleasure.

No matter what region you have, garden borders are great!

Recommended bed sizes

You can choose the shape and size of the tall beds yourself. On the Internet, photos of do-it-yourself beds are widely presented. We can easily choose the appropriate option.

Experienced gardeners recommend maintaining the following parameters:

  • height - 20-60 cm;
  • width - 80-130 cm.

  • Do-it-yourself mill - the best ideas and instructions for building decorative mills in the garden and on the site (105 photos)
  • DIY walk-behind tractor - how to make a simple and reliable home-made walk-behind tractor for the household (105 photos)

  • Do-it-yourself gate - the best options, diagrams, drawings and projects for home and summer cottages (135 photos)

If the basis of the bed is soil, then the height of the fence can be limited to 20-30 cm.If the land on the site is not suitable for growing vegetables, the bed is made higher: from 30 to 50 cm.

The width of the beds is chosen from the calculation: two rows of plants are placed freely. This is necessary for the plants to be well lit. The correct design of the garden fence contributes to obtaining a high yield of vegetable crops.

Vertical bed of pallets or pallets

For the garden, choose whole pallets that are not affected by rot and mold. Pay attention to the factory markings. Usually, to prolong their life, the wood on the pallets undergoes chemical or heat treatment.
Both options are suitable for growing ornamental plants, but for the beds from which you will harvest, use only thermally treated pallets. Be sure to check them for nails and knots.

To create a garden bed, you will need: a pallet, non-woven covering material (agrofibre), burlap, dense fabric, soil, seedlings.

Getting started:

  1. Clean and treat the pallet with paint or exterior compound
  2. cover the back with a double layer of agrofibre, burlap or cloth
  3. we plant the plants, starting from the bottom row
  4. compact the soil tightly and fill all the free space
  5. We spill the finished bed and leave it in a horizontal position for a month for better root germination and consolidation of the soil
  6. we hang the bed on the wall, fence, crossbar, you can lean against the wall

Advice: agrofibre can be used to make pockets for each row of the garden bed. And although it will take a little longer, the consumption of soil will be much less.

Idea: pallets can become the basis for vertical flower beds and planting of herbs. Paint them with bright paint, attach existing containers (flower pots or containers, buckets, painted cans, linen bags) and plant the plants there.

Materials for filling high beds

The bottom of the fence is filled with construction mesh. It helps to protect crops from moles and rodents. The next layer is geotextile. It prevents the appearance of large weeds in the garden.

Then construction shavings and leaves are laid. They are followed by rotted manure or compost. The last layer is fertile soil enriched with mineral fertilizers. The layer thickness should be approximately 15 cm.

The best time to design beds in a summer cottage is mid-autumn. During the winter, the layers will thicken, the plants are provided with comfortable conditions for growth.

Vertical bed of construction mesh

This bed is ideal for growing flowers, herbs, vegetables and even potatoes or mushrooms.

  • the construction mesh must be rolled up in the form of a pipe, with a diameter of 80 - 90 cm.
  • spread a layer of straw along the outer edge, and fill in a layer of compost inside.
  • we cover the soil in layers of 10 cm, in each layer we plant seeds or tubers of plants and water abundantly.

Instead of straw, you can use polyethylene or burlap. Such a bed looks spectacular, takes up little space, is mobile and easy to maintain.

Why is pavement coverage necessary?

There are several reasons for the high-quality arrangement of the tracks with this or that coating. Most of them are well known to the owners of the sites, but nevertheless they are worth re-marking.

Correctly equipped aisles between the beds in the garden solve several important problems at once.

  • The first reason is that the paths are constantly overgrown with weeds, which germinate in the beds or shed seeds that fall on the territory of cultivated plants. All this eventually turns into an endless struggle for the harvest.
  • If you completely remove the weeds, but then leave the soil open, then in rainy weather it will be impossible to approach the beds without wearing rubber boots, which will then have to be cleaned for a long time from the moist soil adhering to them. Otherwise, the soil adhering to the shoes will spread to the rest of the covered areas of the yard, and then will certainly fall into the living quarters of the house.
  • In addition, strips of uncovered land completely cleared of weeds contribute to very rapid evaporation of moisture from the beds. Therefore, the consumption of water for irrigation increases significantly.
  • Another reason to equip the paths between the rows is to obtain the absolute maximum comfort of working in the garden, and as a result - a significant increase in the productivity of this noble work.
  • A garden with neatly decorated paths always looks more aesthetically pleasing than with ordinary earthen or densely overgrown weeds.

All of the above negative points in no way improve the mood, since even having vegetables, berries or herbs “at hand”, it is quite difficult to collect them from the garden both during the rain and for a long time after it. Therefore, you will have to wait until the soil is dry and slippery and sticky.

In a word, high-quality paths between the beds should be the goal of any self-respecting gardener.

"Aligned" or "aligned" - how is it written?

There is a debate about the correct spelling of the word. The verbs are similar, perfect, -rov- is the root. They differ only in suffixes (-it, -yat).

In the future tense, in the imperative mood they look the same:

"Align"

(the "align" option is not considered correct);

The expressions "will align (s)" can mean the singular or plural of the related noun:

"The surface of the lake will level out by morning"

(smoothed out, made even).

"The folds will even out if you iron the skirt."

(the material will become even, without folds).

"The ranks must align"

(become equal, the same).

"To level the teams, the organizers put them in the same conditions"

(teams must be equal in terms of conditions).

How to level an area with a tractor or by hand loosening

Alignment can be done in different ways:

  1. Loosening with agricultural machines. In this case, soil treatment is carried out with the participation of motoblocks or tractors. This technique allows you to cope with irregularities, the height of which is a maximum of 15 cm. All subsequent work is carried out manually: the loosened soil is evenly distributed over the site. The tractor bucket is capable of picking up massive clods of soil. Copes with leveling the soil up to 1 meter. Before carrying out work, levels are set.
  2. Delivery of fresh soil. The plot is leveled by filling in a new layer of earth. The method is suitable for areas with a slope, where the lower part is filled with soil.

Advice! The best way to level the plot is to order a tractor. You will have to pay about 1 thousand rubles for the service. Fuel costs must also be taken into account. The technique removes the fertile soil layer, making the site perfectly flat. After the soil has been treated, it should be doused with steam to kill pathogens, weeds and insects.

Vertical bed-bag

A bed from a bag can be placed both vertically and horizontally. Give preference to a bag made of natural material, since artificial fibers will collapse under the influence of moisture and the sun, without serving even one season. Make a loop on top for hanging, fill with soil and secure in place.

Make holes in the bag and plant seedlings or tubers in them.

By the way, you can not hang the bag, but install it in a sunny area of the garden or yard. The main thing is to take care of the stability or fastening of your garden.

By analogy with a bed from a bag, you can build mini beds from a wooden, metal or plastic barrel.

"Trim" or "trim" - how to do it right

These are different words. Both in meaning and in terms of morphology. In the first verb, the root -rov- indicates a similarity with the words already considered. Prefixes differ.

If “vy-” assumes the execution of a previously not started action (“align”), then “sub-” means an easy correction of the basically completed one (“align”). The main meaning is the same.

The root "-rav-" refers to the test word "equal". That is, the action is aimed at bringing something to some identical values. This is, for example, size, weight or quantity - whatever.

The rule is the same for all words with a different prefix. The general meaning changes, but the essence of the action remains the same. The spelling of the words "align" and "align" (preferably "align") is generally described in the previous section.
